  • Portrait 'Ink and Water' (speed painting) offers a glance at my artistic vision-it is my first artwork featured on UA-cam. I'm playing with ink by dropping it on some wet surfaces of the paper (size A4) in order to create a lasting visual impression.
    I'm a French contemporary artist (drawer, painter and illustrator) and I'm glad to offer a glance at my artistic vision. This particular artwork is probably in the vein of contemporary pop art and pop artists. I'm often asked whether I use watercolor but with this type of paintings, ink is by far the best material.
    Please contact me if you'd like your music to feature in one of my videos.

    Would love to see more speed painting portraits and other artworks like this one. Very original to use ink instead of watercolor, it seems like it's almost a digital painting!

    I think your technique is great! I would just suggest a little less darkness on the right side. It made the picture very heavy. Just a little less with a little more texture in the hair or a defined jaw line to bring in more of that white contrast. Beautiful :D

    Okay thank you! The paper I'm using is Canson Mixed Media that's why I called it mix media paper.

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  11 років тому

    Thank you very much ! Actually I simply paint the area in the bottom corner with a good amount of water (you need to see that the paper is really wet but beware not to put to much though). And then I just dropped the ink right in the middle to file the space. You can do pretty much what you want with a bit of practice. This video was my first (ever) attempt using this method so you know...
    Ink from pébéo is provided with that kind of tool, this is the plug of the bottle.

    It's amazing keep it up. Want's to try it sometimes. I've got 1 question, the brushes mentioned, fine, medium and broad tip, you use them all in one image or just one which one you want ?

    • @DavidBayo
      @DavidBayo  9 років тому +4

      Lara Marie Bonanno Thanks ! Well, it simply depends on the details you want to achieve on a specific area. If you work around a section of your painting where you have to be precise, you will need a smaller brush tip. But in general I use the large one.

    Do you have to use Centenaire watercolor paper, or does it just have to be a certain weight? I tried this on watercolor paper I already had and it bled like crazy. I do a portrait on canvas which worked better but the ink didn't seem to flow as much...

  • @misslynniee
    @misslynniee 12 років тому

    wow! so you wet the paper with the brush along the areas that you want the ink to spread and have the droplets of ink over them?

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  12 років тому

    @misslynniee Totally! Then you can play with the amount of water that you spread on the paper to create different style. My painting is almost completely uniform but you can decide where to put the ink and have some nice gradients for instance.

  • @elieabouraad6555

    what kind of pen did u used to underline the painting in he first?

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  12 років тому

    Yeah I suppose you need to apply more water. Actually, this video was my very first time using this technique therefore, I'm not a expert. But all the "mechanic" is found in the amount of water you spread on the paper. The Ink does not really matter.

    Question for you, I have been trying to play with techniques for painting with water and ink. I am using watercolor paper. I lay out my design with water first like you do by the time I go to add ink half of the water has absorbed into the paper and does not seem to let the ink flow throughout the design. I work fairly quickly, it seems like I am having to add a ridiculous amount of water for the ink to flow which then in turn ruins my sharp edges and crisp lines. Could the problem be that I am not using enough ink? I am not putting it on with a dropper, as I do not have one. I am adding it in with a brush. Maybe the brush is not transferring enough ink for it to travel along the path of the water? any advise would be greatly appreciated.

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  12 років тому

    Almost...! This is Keira Knightley.

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  12 років тому

    I already answered that questions... You can find the brushes in every art store I guess or buy them on the internet. The Ink is from Pébéo and it's a watercolor paper called "Centenaire".

  • @reptameuck

    hey, cool vid :)
    why does water (from water brushe) dry so slowly? it appears so cause of the montage of the video, or is it something else? am i just using the wrong paper? thanks :)

    • @DavidBayo
      @DavidBayo  8 років тому

      Thanks :). Yeah, it’s mostly due to the montage, however, you should try different papers to find the one that suits you or perhaps put a bit more of water.

  • @DavidBayo
    @DavidBayo  11 років тому

    Well, I don't exactly know what you call "mix media paper" but if it's thick enough, it will work. Or at least, try to put less ink as you can, just thin layers...
    This method in particular uses a good amount of water but if you only use ink, a simple bristol (or whatever) paper should work.

    What the hell am I doing wrong? If I try to paint details, the water dries by the time I'm supposed to drop the ink so it doesn't spread. Even when I mix my ink with some water to make it run quicker.

    • @Wiksito

      It could be the paper that you're using! And also reapplying the water?

    • @DavidBayo
      @DavidBayo  10 років тому +1

      In fact, if you wanna paint a large section of your composition, or even the entire piece, there are no real secrets, you just have to be quick. At least, try to put a bit more water where you know it's needed to prevent your paper from drying too fast.

    • @ThenameisAntti
