    I think it's always beneficial to show our mistakes and not just successes. It shows people that everyone makes mistakes, that everyone's human, even "experts." I think it gives people permission to try new things and to risk failures. Good on you for keeping the segment in.

  • @mattrogers6835
    @mattrogers6835 6 років тому

    It's very refreshing to see someone who will go over their failures in order to inform others. Honesty is always the best policy. You've always been a stand-up guy, completely devoid of ego. It's very cool. Something you don't encounter very often in general--not just in the realm of custom toys. And I'm talking about life! Thanks Chris. You're an inspiration. End result is excellent, as always!

    Great vid Chris! A good method for painting carbon fiber is to get a fishnet legging and cover the prop in it and airbrush a silver onto the black surface. You have the illusion of texture and it soooo much easier than working with vinyl.

    Thank you so much for this video! Definitely made me more confident in making my first cosplay props. Tip for anyone that tries this, definitely DO NOT skip the step where he drills out the barrels with the Dremel. It makes it SO much easier to separate the two pieces. I made this mistake on the first one and it was so hard to pry them apart. The second one I drilled out the holes in the barrels with a power drill, removed the screws, and easy peasy to separate.

    Thank you for sharing what didn't work as well. The hardest thing, I feel, about making custom collectibles (or anything creative for that matter) is when things don't quite work out the way you envisioned it, and finding a new way. Most creatives are pretty critical of their own work as well so when something doesn't quite go right it can be even more frustrating. Just keep at it, try a different route and you will find something that works and you'll be happy with. That's what I try to do at least. :) Huge fan of your work, and it's because of you that I've been giving a go with my own attempts at custom collectibles. Several things I want to work on, including a diorama of a 2.5 ft tall AT-AT that I need to blow up. ;) I always look forward to your videos. Keep up the great work.

    Great Videos, and thanks for the blaster heat damage with paint brushes, not all of us are good with an airbrush.....I think the blaster came out GREAT. Most people do not realize how much work goes into these projects and while the grips did not turn out like you wanted, seeing how hard that material was to work with was helpful. We love the projects you work on.

    I really love your work and I haven't read the other comments but if you use a spray bottle with just a drop of hand soap and spray it on before applying the vinyl you're able to readjust the vinyl and get the air bubbles out easily and then when you let it dry after using the heat gun it should easily wrap and hold its shape and form

    I happen to be very familiar with Star-Lord's blasters for reasons I can't talk about publicly but you definitely nailed the colors, weathering, and blast marks. If I had to "guess" how a good replica would be made I'd say it'd have to be hydro dipped.

    Quick tip for getting a carbon fiber effect, lay down your base coat, get a section of a rug gripper pad and spray over it with a lighter color, one dry off set the pad a little bit and spray over it again with another shade of the color you used for the base. Won't have sharp edges on it but will still give the visual effect

  • @mikes252

    one technique I have used for carbon fiber is get some of that foam rubber drawer liner , its like a square checker pattern with half the squares open , paint the base plastic in black then cut the liner to the same shape of the handle and then lay it on the plastic, use a silver spray paint from a distance, it will make the open squares silver and leave the others black and it mimics carbon fiber. Then for smaller areas you can even cut a small shape of it and line it up with the already painted areas and match the pattern, as its flexible you can wrap it around the grip and airbrush and with some practice looks just like the carbon fiber

    Actually did the exact same thing with the vinyl wrap with the Rubies replica a few months back. Not sure which vinyl you had exactly but if you get the Vivvid glossy carbon fiber it looks even better and it’s a lot easier to put the handle, best way is not to do any cut-outs beforehand and place a full piece of the wrap and make the cut-outs after you’ve heated it up to the handle if that makes any sense. Either way great paint on it! End result was amazing! Keep up the awesome vids

  • @RainMakeR_Workshop
    @RainMakeR_Workshop 6 років тому

    If you wrap the handle in masking tape the remove it with a scalpel, You'll get a pattern that you can then cut out and transfer to the wrap and that means you're able to use minimal heat forming. Also if you do the wrap while its in the two halves it would be a lot easier. if you line up the pattern on a wrap, overlapping edges are practically invisible, so if you want that seamless look, you can just add a strip on the visible edges.
    another approach would be to not cut out the sheet at all, just lay it then form it with heat, holes are easy to add after. this is the method used to wrap cars. If you watch the "Wrap Attack" playlist on the Yiannimize channel, it shows how professional vinyl wrappers approach unusual objects such as guitars, tv's, toilets, ps4 controllers and other unusual shapes.
