The line at the end when Matrix says, "I let him go", always makes me think of a scene from The Dark Knight. The Joker is holding Rachael over the edge of the balcony. Batman says , "Let her go", and the Joker responses with "Poor choice of words", and drops her.
One scene Schwartzenegger wanted to do was, during the battle at the climax, he wanted to chop off a soldier's arm and then, start punching him with the severed arm (the director said even that was "TOO Ridiculous"). A decade later, the writers of TOY STORY heard about that story from COMMANDO and wrote in the scene where Buzz Lightyear loses his arm and, later at the "tea party", Woody slaps Buzz in the face with his own arm.
The extended/unrated version of the scene where he cuts that guys arm off with the machete has him throw it at the soldier as he is writhing on the ground.
Helicopter blades push the air down when they are spinning, creating a positive pressure, not a vacuum. So you would not get "sucked up" into the blades. You crouch down as you near the rotor tip path as the blades are able to change their plane of rotation or angle of attack. Strong winds can push the blades up or down relative to the rotor mast while the helicopter is sitting on the ground with the engine(s) running. Think of a spinning disc on your finger tip. You vary the angle of the spin horizontally by applying an external force to the disc. If the blades are spinning slower, say at idle, they can droop and the tips will be nearer to the ground. I was told that for a while back in the day it was military protocol that the helicopter blades had to come to a complete stop before the President off boarded. Not sure if that's what the Navy is still teaching or what.
The Sea King (Marine One) is 15 foot tall. no need to duck unless you are 14 foot tall. By default, no need to stop the Rotors spinning before getting on or off. Maybe it is to ensure the wigs are not blown off their head? 😂
I think honestly that it's just a really good habit to get into whether you need to or not. there have been several prominent cases of people being hit in freak accidents

Helicopter sound was taken from MASH , who would notice you have turbine chopper on screen and pick up its piston engine chopper sound . Also they could have hired even one Spanish speaking person to get all Spanish words right ... then again they hired a white girl to play Spanish in Aliens 1986 .
I think the younger generation will always be luckier as they can access everything 80's on a device they can carry in their pocket. As much as I love over romanticising how awesome hanging out in arcades, my parents kicking me out out of the house in the summer and telling me to go play with my friends just be back by dark, Gameboys, Walkmans and MTV... The truth is we all just miss being young

I do love this movie unapologetically. It's dumb, but as you pointed out, it knows exactly what it's doing and having so much fun with it. For goofy self-aware fun with 90s action, you can't beat Nic Cage. If you haven't done The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off and/or National Treasure, dive in. Also, for the 80s, don't sleep on the combination of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Especially Big Trouble in Little China, but Escape from New York is pretty awesome, and of course The Thing.
This movie never fails to put a smile on my face, it's pure 80's action, it's got everything, gun fights, brawls, car chases, great one liners and i love how they don't even bother to get in a backstory for the characters, it doesn't matter, just get to the action, that was the 80's.
Before filming actors, like Arnold, will workout to max forcing "the pump". But this leaves you in total fatigue, barely lift your arms. After all this is just a movie for show & fun not a science class full of facts.
@@davidq.5488 Yeah, for those who don’t know, this has become completely normalized in superhero films nowadays: 5% shirtless scenes where they do these extreme workouts combined with dehydration to squeeze out as much water weight as possible (and, though they won’t admit it, steroids); then 95% keeping the hero in a full-body suit you can digitally alter in post so the actor doesn’t straight-up die from the stress of it all. (Then they get “dad bod” between films because unless you won the genetic lottery, the whole process ages you prematurely.)
So glad you guys took this for what it was, an unapologetic over-the-top action masterpiece! Some people crap on this movie because it's "unrealistic" but that's literally the point.
And I really don't understand how anyone can say this movie is unrealistic, when it's quite the opposite. This is all real just because of Schwarzenegger! I don't doubt for a second that he could've done ALL THIS in real life. =)

As a Bruce Willis pick, you just gotta do The Last Boyscout. Its an underrated classic, masterfully written, great characters, best one-liners, top-notch dark humor, over the top action. Iconic piece all over.
For me, this is the epitome of the outrageous 80s action movie. The only thing that's missing is Arnold taking a handful of bullets and throwing them at a group of enemies and killing them.
I'm from Spain. I saw this movie when I was 8 years old in a cinema in Morocco. Original version with arabic subtitles back when I couldn't understand one single word of english nor arabic. Yet I remember coming out of the cinema thinking I had watched the best movie in the world.

This movie really started the Arnie-as-quipster that continued through several of his action movies (i.e. Running Man). My favorite here is his exchange with Sully and with Cindy immediately afterwards. "I let him go".

We have a 7 yr old girl and 5 yr old boy. Not weird at all. Quick pecks on the lips when tucking in for the night or when I leave for work in the morning. Now obviously in a few years it's just not the same. They are getting older and you don't want to embarrass them lol.
In a way Commando has always reminded me of Sergio Leone's western My Name is Nobody. They are both intentionally comedic affectionate parodies of their own genres while simultaneously succeeding as pureblooded genre movies. It's a rare feat.
The awkward Jean Claude Van Damme dance is from Kickboxer. It's a pretty good 80s action movie and I haven't seen any other react channels hit it either. Go for it!

@@bwestacado9643 something that is overlooked is that it was so easy to lump guys like Stallone and Schwarzenegger together with all the other 80s action stars and see them all as mindless Meatheads but when you actually break down their respective filmography, they're both a cut above all the other action stars in their era, people forget that Stallone wrote and even directed a lot of his films and he always tried to put a very heavy level of character in the development of his films. Meanwhile Schwarzenegger had a level of charisma that a lot of his contemporaries did not have and also managed to give performances where you just couldn't imagine anybody else doing the role Justice. Even if they weren't the best films, you never really faulted either of them for their performances cuz you know at least they gave it their all.

After having seen few Arnold movies, now you HAVE to watch his Last Action Hero. Few other top class 90s action movies are 'The Rock', 'Desperado', 'Face/Off'. Also I hope to see 'A Fistful of Dollars', 'For a Few Dollars More', 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' and 'Once Upon a Time in the West' some day on your channel.

Love hearing the "check your phone" idea. Yeah, we didn't have a big cellphone system in the 1980s. So yeah, we used phone books and paper maps to get around. Cellphones began taking hold in the mid-1990s.
My cousin gave me that poster when I was 12 and I thought it was the absolute coolest thing in the world. One of my favourite Arnold movies for sure . ☺️

It's not that you get sucked up into the blades of a helicopter, It's because the blades can dip below 6 ft when rotating. Because the blades are still creating downward force, they rise and dip at certain points in the rotation.
One of my favorite continuity mistakes in a movie, notice when Arnie flips the car from it's side the earlier damage is gone when they drive off. Edit: They noticed!
Never one of my favorites, but I enjoyed watching you guys see the insanity that is "Commando!" Another flawed but fun action movie is "The Running Man" that stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as well. Some of the lesser known 80's movies you should see, would be "The Last Starfighter" and "Night of the Comet." They're pure gold.
There's a story about how when Arnold macheted off the guys arm he wanted to hang onto it and beat the next guy with it. Also Point Break (1991) with Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.
Other 80s/90s action stars - Eddie Murphy - The Beverly Hills Cop movies are comedy/action but I'd only bother with the first and second movies. Golden Child is another. I'm sure George would have plenty to say about that one (ahem). 48 Hours and Another 48 Hours were both good and are more action/comedy than the other way around. Christian Slater - Hard Rain, Broken Arrow, True Romance, Cuffs (which is more comedy/action). Patrick Swayze - Red Dawn (1984), Road House (also has Sam Elliot and his mustache), Point Break (also has Keanu), Next of Kin (also has Liam Neeson). Liam Neeson - Next of Kin which I mentioned above, Darkman Micky Rourke - Year of the Dragon (I've never seen this one), Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man, The Pope of Greenwich Village (never seen it), Johnny Handsome (probably my favorite of his, also has Morgan Freeman). Keanu Reeves - Point Break (mentioned above), Speed, The Matrix Rutger Hauer - Blind Fury, The Blood of Heroes, Split Second, and of course Blade Runner Peter Weller - The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Robocop, Robocop 2,
While we're on classic manly action movies, I can only recommend the Director's Cut of Payback (1999) with Mel Gibson, which also has the (in my mind) greatest Lucy Liu appearance ever!
I bought an area rug from Ikea a few years back. Carried it out over my shoulder, harnessing my inner Commando and feeling like a badass. It was red and pretty.
The 80's were also a great time for the "buddy cop" genre. Usually, but not always, two mismatched partners, working together to solve a crime. Some of my favorites are the Lethal Weapon series, if you want more super-cheese like this movie, try Tango & Cash. But one of my favorites is Running Scared (1986) starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, highly recommend.
Arnold Scwharzenegger's main body doubles, for about 15 years, was a guy named Peter Kent. He was briefly a councilman here in Squamish, B.C. a few years back. In T@, he's the guy on the bike jumping of the overpass, into the culvert. Great reaction to some more phenomenal 80s action movie and all it's fantastic cheeziness.
I remember popping out to buy food when I was on holiday in the Greek Islands and seeing Arnie carrying a tree on a huge projector screen in one of the bars. I immediately forgot about food shopping, went in and bought a drink.

Other 80s/90s action stars: Kurt Russel (Soldier, Executive Decision, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Backdraft, Escape from New York, Escape from LA) Chuck Norris (pretty much anything he's ever done) Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Mission: Impossible movies, Taps) Mel Gibson (Lethal Weapon movies, Mad Max movies, The Bounty, Ransom, Conspiracy Theory, The Patriot, We Were Soldiers) Harrison Ford (Witness, Frantic, Patriot Games, The Fugitive, Air Force One) Clint Eastwood (Dirty Harry movies, Firefox, Pale Rider, Heartbreak Ridge, Tightrope, Unforgiven, In the Line of Fire, Absolute Power, A Perfect World) Laim Neeson (Darkman, Rob Roy, Micheal Collins) There's also Superman and Superman II. Superman III and IV aren't really worth the time unless you're in the mood for a really bad movie. And if you want to delve back into the 1960s/70s, Bruce Lee movies.
This fucking thumbnail is... perfection. This reaction explains the weird disturbance I felt in the force in early April... like... someone in Canada was _purring_. My parents used to kiss me on the lips and it was weird as shit in hindsight. 80s/90s action: Face/Off! A lot of folks also dig the Lethal Weapon movies. And I'd also say... The Evil Dead trilogy. Yes, the first one is a pure low-budget horror movie, but the second and the third pack great oneliners and that same sort of goofy, at times even cartoony feel that Commando has. Bruce Campbell is definitely among the iconic 80s one-liner dudes. (I could almost swear you'd already done Evil Dead 2 but either I'm confusing you with someone else or UA-cam has hidden it from me.)
The first time I saw Rae Dawn Chong was in the movie Quest For Fire. She was memorable even then. Commando was the first movie I saw her in where she had actual words to say.

Italians are already weirdly super huggy/kissy, so it's normal for them. Alyssa Milano definitely passes the Italian check, but Arnie is a huge fail on the Italian test and makes it pretty weird. Depending on how deep the 80s rabbit hole you want to go, Dolph Lundgren was pretty big. Some of his movies are absolute treasures they're so cliché 80s. Masters of the Universe is a must see in my opinion. It's so bad and so removed from its source material that it's almost good. Lol
Skeletor was great and Evil-Lyn had that perfect look, I think she was some famous soap opera villain before so she really knew how to give the look or enjoy suffering.

This is the most Ahnold of all the Ahnold movies. Everything that became a trademark of an Arnold Schwartzenegger action movie was cranked to 1000 in this one.
Speaking of writing, I recognized the name of one of the storytellers. Joseph Loeb is also a comic writer for The Avengers, Daredevil ('Yellow") and Batman ("The Long Halloween"). Just FYI: People duck under helicopter blades because a sudden crosswind can cause them to wobble up and down.
Though Van Damme improved significantly as an actor in his later years, some of his best movies were with bad acting (mostly his) and great cheesy 80s / 90s action film quality. Some fun movies to watch react to are Bloodsport Timecop Kickboxer (with the funny dance scene) Cyborg Hard Target Double Impact Lionheart Nowhere to Run Sudden Death and The Quest or JCVD for some great acting. Also for high quality action, not Van Damme but Harrison Ford in "The Fugitive".
If you want to jump into Jean Claude Van Damme territory, I recommend: Hard Target, Bloodsport, Lionhart, Time Cop, Sudden Death, Cyborg, Nowhere to Run and Maximum Risk. Van Damme gave a lot of Hong Kong directors their chance to direct in Hollywood.

As for the helicopter question, the simple reason for bending down is to avoid the fatal possibility of being beheaded by the rotor blades frantically spinning round if you remained at full standing height. As for other films to recommend, I would suggest Cliffhanger, Lethal Weapon trilogy, the Mel Gibson film Ransom, Hard Target and Nowhere To Run, Eraser, The Running Man, Breakdown, Unlawful Entry, the Dirty Harry trilogy and Deep Blue Sea

Yeah, and it's really a shame they didn't shoot the whole arm scene, not even in the extended cut. It's the only flaw of this movie.

For goofy self-aware fun with 90s action, you can't beat Nic Cage. If you haven't done The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off and/or National Treasure, dive in.
Also, for the 80s, don't sleep on the combination of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter. Especially Big Trouble in Little China, but Escape from New York is pretty awesome, and of course The Thing.

This movie never fails to put a smile on my face, it's pure 80's action, it's got everything, gun fights, brawls, car chases, great one liners and i love how they don't even bother to get in a backstory for the characters, it doesn't matter, just get to the action, that was the 80's.
I heard a story that they told Arnie to just pick up the log and he had to explain that he's not actually as strong as his characters usually are.
Same with lifting the telephone booth and holding Sully over the edge. The director kept forgetting Arnie could not actually do these things.
"Are kidding? That's like 8000 lbs!"
Before filming actors, like Arnold, will workout to max forcing "the pump". But this leaves you in total fatigue, barely lift your arms. After all this is just a movie for show & fun not a science class full of facts.
He was also asked to hold Sully over the ravine too from what I've read. He was like WTF!
@@davidq.5488 Yeah, for those who don’t know, this has become completely normalized in superhero films nowadays: 5% shirtless scenes where they do these extreme workouts combined with dehydration to squeeze out as much water weight as possible (and, though they won’t admit it, steroids); then 95% keeping the hero in a full-body suit you can digitally alter in post so the actor doesn’t straight-up die from the stress of it all. (Then they get “dad bod” between films because unless you won the genetic lottery, the whole process ages you prematurely.)
So glad you guys took this for what it was, an unapologetic over-the-top action masterpiece! Some people crap on this movie because it's "unrealistic" but that's literally the point.
And I really don't understand how anyone can say this movie is unrealistic, when it's quite the opposite. This is all real just because of Schwarzenegger! I don't doubt for a second that he could've done ALL THIS in real life.

As a Bruce Willis pick, you just gotta do The Last Boyscout. Its an underrated classic, masterfully written, great characters, best one-liners, top-notch dark humor, over the top action. Iconic piece all over.

I'm from Spain. I saw this movie when I was 8 years old in a cinema in Morocco. Original version with arabic subtitles back when I couldn't understand one single word of english nor arabic. Yet I remember coming out of the cinema thinking I had watched the best movie in the world.

This movie really started the Arnie-as-quipster that continued through several of his action movies (i.e. Running Man). My favorite here is his exchange with Sully and with Cindy immediately afterwards. "I let him go".
George, you edited out my favourite line, when Cindy asks, shortly after Matrix drops Sully off a cliff, "What happened to Sully?" Arnold "I let him go." Genius.

We have a 7 yr old girl and 5 yr old boy. Not weird at all. Quick pecks on the lips when tucking in for the night or when I leave for work in the morning. Now obviously in a few years it's just not the same. They are getting older and you don't want to embarrass them lol.

In a way Commando has always reminded me of Sergio Leone's western My Name is Nobody. They are both intentionally comedic affectionate parodies of their own genres while simultaneously succeeding as pureblooded genre movies. It's a rare feat.

@@bwestacado9643 something that is overlooked is that it was so easy to lump guys like Stallone and Schwarzenegger together with all the other 80s action stars and see them all as mindless Meatheads but when you actually break down their respective filmography, they're both a cut above all the other action stars in their era, people forget that Stallone wrote and even directed a lot of his films and he always tried to put a very heavy level of character in the development of his films. Meanwhile Schwarzenegger had a level of charisma that a lot of his contemporaries did not have and also managed to give performances where you just couldn't imagine anybody else doing the role Justice. Even if they weren't the best films, you never really faulted either of them for their performances cuz you know at least they gave it their all.

Love hearing the "check your phone" idea. Yeah, we didn't have a big cellphone system in the 1980s. So yeah, we used phone books and paper maps to get around. Cellphones began taking hold in the mid-1990s.
Air Force One starring Harrison Ford is one of my all time favorite 90s action movies. Also Harrison Ford in general has so many good movies.

My favorite part of this movie was how the ammo belt kept getting longer, then shorter, then longer again. Continuity didn’t exist in the 80s.

Arnold swinging onto an elevator “That was definitely not Arnold”….yep, that’s legendary veteran stuntman and friend of mine Bob Yerkes. He was 53 years old at the time of performing that stunt (he’s 90 years old today and still trains stuntmen in Acrobatics on a property in CA)

It's not that you get sucked up into the blades of a helicopter, It's because the blades can dip below 6 ft when rotating. Because the blades are still creating downward force, they rise and dip at certain points in the rotation.
One of my favorite continuity mistakes in a movie, notice when Arnie flips the car from it's side the earlier damage is gone when they drive off. Edit: They noticed!

Never one of my favorites, but I enjoyed watching you guys see the insanity that is "Commando!" Another flawed but fun action movie is "The Running Man" that stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as well. Some of the lesser known 80's movies you should see, would be "The Last Starfighter" and "Night of the Comet." They're pure gold.

The 80's were also a great time for the "buddy cop" genre. Usually, but not always, two mismatched partners, working together to solve a crime. Some of my favorites are the Lethal Weapon series, if you want more super-cheese like this movie, try Tango & Cash. But one of my favorites is Running Scared (1986) starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, highly recommend.

Arnold Scwharzenegger's main body doubles, for about 15 years, was a guy named Peter Kent. He was briefly a councilman here in Squamish, B.C. a few years back. In T@, he's the guy on the bike jumping of the overpass, into the culvert. Great reaction to some more phenomenal 80s action movie and all it's fantastic cheeziness.
Steven Seagal's early films, especially "Hard to Kill", "Marked for Death", and "Out for Justice" are pretty fun 80s action
I remember popping out to buy food when I was on holiday in the Greek Islands and seeing Arnie carrying a tree on a huge projector screen in one of the bars. I immediately forgot about food shopping, went in and bought a drink.
One action movie I really enjoy is Action Jackson starring Carl Weathers.
Rae Dawn Chong also starred in Quest for Fire - which also stars Ron Perlman. She plays a Cro Magnon, Perlman plays a Neanderthal (more or less).

80s/90s action: Face/Off! A lot of folks also dig the Lethal Weapon movies. And I'd also say... The Evil Dead trilogy. Yes, the first one is a pure low-budget horror movie, but the second and the third pack great oneliners and that same sort of goofy, at times even cartoony feel that Commando has. Bruce Campbell is definitely among the iconic 80s one-liner dudes. (I could almost swear you'd already done Evil Dead 2 but either I'm confusing you with someone else or UA-cam has hidden it from me.)

The first time I saw Rae Dawn Chong was in the movie Quest For Fire. She was memorable even then. Commando was the first movie I saw her in where she had actual words to say.

Only if they're Italian. Otherwise it's weird. Italians are already weirdly super huggy/kissy, so it's normal for them. Alyssa Milano definitely passes the Italian check, but Arnie is a huge fail on the Italian test and makes it pretty weird. Lol.

Depending on how deep the 80s rabbit hole you want to go, Dolph Lundgren was pretty big. Some of his movies are absolute treasures they're so cliché 80s. Masters of the Universe is a must see in my opinion. It's so bad and so removed from its source material that it's almost good. Lol
Skeletor was great and Evil-Lyn had that perfect look, I think she was some famous soap opera villain before so she really knew how to give the look or enjoy suffering.

This is the most Ahnold of all the Ahnold movies. Everything that became a trademark of an Arnold Schwartzenegger action movie was cranked to 1000 in this one.
The lethal weapon series is really the class of 80’s action genre.
Speaking of writing, I recognized the name of one of the storytellers. Joseph Loeb is also a comic writer for The Avengers, Daredevil ('Yellow") and Batman ("The Long Halloween").
Just FYI: People duck under helicopter blades because a sudden crosswind can cause them to wobble up and down.
Though Van Damme improved significantly as an actor in his later years, some of his best movies were with bad acting (mostly his) and great cheesy 80s / 90s action film quality.

As for the helicopter question, the simple reason for bending down is to avoid the fatal possibility of being beheaded by the rotor blades frantically spinning round if you remained at full standing height. As for other films to recommend, I would suggest Cliffhanger, Lethal Weapon trilogy, the Mel Gibson film Ransom, Hard Target and Nowhere To Run, Eraser, The Running Man, Breakdown, Unlawful Entry, the Dirty Harry trilogy and Deep Blue Sea
