Extreme fishing - Fish that fishes with a rod and lure fused to its face

  • There is extreme fishing and then is going to such extremes that you have a rod and a worm-like lure fused to your face. Quite frankly it's the type of commitment we admire. Meet the Tasselled Anglerfish the ultimate fisher.
    Nothing escapes this angler. It’s the master of disguise with camouflage so brilliant it can sit out in the open and not be seen. Silent and still it either waits for their prey to pass or lures their victims by casting the rod and worm-like bait.
    And in the sea there is no such thing as a free feed. Any fish that tries to take the bait is swallowed whole, no time for chewing! It’s expandable mouth acting like a vacuum to suck up its prey. From beginning to mouth filling end, it’s all over in a split second.
    Fish fall for the lure every time, hook, line and sinker.
    What is really cool is that this is the first time that this behaviour has been filmed in high speed and the results are nothing short of spectacular.
    PLEASE NOTE: Do not try this at home. Sticking a rod and worm-like lure to your face could result in untold injuries and years embarrassment.
    PS. If you haven't guessed it yet and before there is a revolt....this NOT Jamie Seymour in the video. This is our resident mermaid and Aquatic Scientist Sheree Marris, so please be kind. We wanted to inject a bit of estrogen into the videos and show women in science :) BUT we promise he will be back

    This video definitely would have benefited from a voiceover in post.

      +DJMouthwash We thought LONG and HARD over this one, but we felt having the real voice as it all occurred underwater was better. maybe we made the wrong decision?

    • @TheNatureofScienceTNOS
      @TheNatureofScienceTNOS  8 років тому +6

      +DJMouthwash Agree, thanks for the feedback. The masks which we recorded the VO are incredibly noisy which would have been super tricky to rectify in post. We will have to rethink this strategy for future clips.

      +Jamie Seymour Nope. I think it would have lost some of her excitement in explaining it. Yes, post is easier to listen to, but this one brought 'the feels' I thought.

      +The Nature of Science I was wondering if it would hav been too time-consuming to clip out or lower the audio just for the inhalations. Those big whooshes of air were the only really distracting part.

    Great video, but maybe add the biggest portion of information in post-production. The audio gets a bit annoying.

      +Jamie Seymour It's actually a fun experience! The mask makes it feel more authentic, so to speak. Perhaps the key information could be done as a commentary instead?

      +Jamie Seymour I liked it and it makes it very real. My point was just that all the audio didn't need to be from the scuba mask :D Again, awesome and interesting video!

      +Jamie Seymour I loved the concept of talking under water! I'd love to see it again! true the breathing in does get a bit annoying but it could easily be made better with some audio editing or equalising. it'd be easy if you know anyone that works in sound engineering, most video making software has an eq you can use.

      +Jamie Seymour It sounded very uncomfortable to breath like that, was that just the audio or was it difficult to dive this way?
      I found the breaths (gasps) made me feel a little sick from the strange audio cues.

    A bit of underwater audio explaining and pointing out some things is ok and even gives the "feel" people are talking about in the comments, but most of it should be recorded separately because some noises get annoying.
    In fact a lot of documentaries that have underwater parts have a few sentences recorded in the scuba masks.

    Interesting, but please don't do underwater audio again. You can comment it afterwards. Please. Thanks.

    You good folks are based in the James Cook University, right? I'm actually a linguist (so my expertise is rather tangential to most of the content of this channel), but I just wanted to ask: have you run into either Bob Dixon or Sasha Aikhenvald yet? They are renowned linguists who have been based at JCU for about 10 years now, and have done a lot of research on languages of many Australian Aboriginal groups for quite some time. Have you ever thought of integrating what native populations know about (and how they classify) toxic/venemous animals within their locales (i.e., local knowledge) into your research of figuring and classifying the components of venoms? Just a thought off the top of my head.

      +SiKedek hmmm Intertesting. Dont know them by name and a quick search of the JCU database doesnt turn up naything either. Any ideas?

    • @SiKedek
      @SiKedek 8 років тому

      +Jamie Seymour Sorry, I should've used their formal names to ease the search. Here's Alexandra ('Sasha') Aikhenvald's JCU profile: research.jcu.edu.au/portfolio/alexandra.aikhenvald - and Robert M. ('Bob') Dixon's: research.jcu.edu.au/portfolio/robert.dixon/
      My advice would be to try to seek out Sasha first - she's very personable (AND knowledgeable) - I had the great honor of having her in the audience during one of my conference talks at UC Berkeley in 2006, and she had some great feedback for me during lunch. Bob's bit more of a hard-nosed, no-nonsense fellow.

    You could have put commentary over the footage rather than have it all muffled and interrupted while you're diving. Cool idea but there just wasn't a need for live commentary on this one

    You could do a voice-over just as easiuly and avoid the distracting sounds. Great video otherwise though :)

      +TRL FrostBite We can only try :) We're trying to do more videos, it's just a catch 22 as we all work full time jobs. Funding would help and its something we're working on. Interesting comment about the other channels. We actually feel a bit stagnant at the moment. Still working out the beast that is social media and how it works and how we can leverage it to show our videos. Reddit is a big one we're trying to get our heads around. It has huge potential but we're grappling with it. The more subscribers and views we get the greater chance we can attract some $'s. Stay tuned and thanks for your support :)

      Awosme! Yes ad revenue helps. Also Hey, Id like to see more videos about Venoms and their workings. What hey do. Ill be sure to start picking up on showing people your channel. Also look at the other growing channels and get some ideas. Brave wilderness is topping right now.

    The forced breathing underwater is causing me stress while watching the video. i feel a tightness in my chest. Please don't do it again. You could, instead, add the same information in post-production.
