  • My wife was able to use a combination of diet and lifestyle changes to get off of her T3 thyroid medication.
She suffered from an unusual form of thyroid resistance due to an eating disorder in her teenage years which left her with metabolic damage, treatment-resistant depression, thyroid resistance, and the inability to lose weight.
She had a complete resolution in her symptoms with the use of T3 thyroid medication (liothyronine) but didn't want to stay on her thyroid medication forever.
To do this, she changed her lifestyle and her diet and, as a result, she was able to get off of her thyroid medication and remain symptom-free.
    This is her diet:

Dr., I believe VERY strongly that an eating disorder in my teens has cause my sluggish thyroid. I'm so grateful that you're talking about this, along with your brave and intelligent wife. Would you PLEASE consider doing an entire video on past eating disorder as causation and exactly what to do about it decades later for those of us on step one of our thyroid (Hashimotos) healing plan? It would be SO much appreciated; you're the only doctor who's ever mentioned this. Thank you!!

I did hard-core keto couple years ago and it nearly killed me, literally. My body stopped responding to my meds, I was in and out of hospital, my body was eating itself from the inside causing severe muscle pain with spasms, couldn't drive for three months while recovering, it was horrible. My doctor is a keto fan but said thyroid patients should never be without carbs, the body goes into shock. Do what you want but thyroid issues are showing up in record numbers due to keto. It was a horrific experience for me. I put all the weight back on and then some and haven't been able to lose a single pound since no matter what. Just be careful

I have been on a gluten free diet for more than 12 years, slowly to begin with, as not a lot of gluten free foods available at that time. I also have been having a lot of supplements like selenium, zinc, coq10, vit b complex, vit d, k2, magnesium glycinate, boron. I managed to lower the levothyroxin in 2019 from 175 mcg to 100mcg. I also did a fast up to 72 hours, when I allowed myself coffee, tea or herbal teas. I am finding it difficult to reduce my prescription. My GP has suggested to try out 75mcg for about 3 months and then do a blood test. For some reason, the GP pharmacist automatically ordered 100mcg and the GP ordered 75mcg, so I have both. I decided to continue with 100mcg until it runs out in January, when I shall start on 75mcg until April, when I shall have a blood test and see if it has worked. My diet is consists mainly veggies, salad, salmon, sardines, macarel, some other fishes, occasional chicken. I have oats, flaxseed, chia seeds, sunflower, pumpkin seeds and nuts, like Brazil nuts, almonds and cashews. Also Have avocados everyday. Fasting is difficult at the moment.

And that’s okay, too. If it’s working properly and you have a great doctor, then you are doing what’s necessary for a good quality of life, and eating well, or course.

Because you have to eat well, and, you need to make sure you are on the right medication for your needs. High fiber, dairy, certain supplements, will absorb the hormone as well, so it’s tricky.

You need to see a functional doctor who looks at the full thyroid panel, which includes Reverse T3. Maybe you aren’t converting the T4 into T3. Also, to feel well, you must eat well.

Thank a lot for this video but you say that your wife is gluten-free as I am because of a very high sensitivity and you also say that she eat overnight oats on the morning with chia seeds, fruits, etc, but there is glusten in oats ? I tried to eat them instead of a traditionnal French breakfeast but my tummy was as bloated as with bread, so I stopped, even if I loved the taste very much... Like your wife, for me a bloated tummy is a very telling sign that I can't eat a food, even eating rice, white or brown, my tummy ressemble to a hot balloon because of the starch and I even struggle to breath after eating it... So I don't know what to eat on the morning as I am not a huge fan of smoothies with vegetables. All healthy suggestions are welcome !

Not all of us can eat fruits and vegetables, and starchy carbs. We would if we could. Trust me, I would not be carnivore if I didn’t have to be. I found “carnivore” before I knew it was a thing - meat was, quite literally, all that I could digest without severe bloating, mood disturbances, etc. I’m assuming your wife doesn’t have Hashimotos, as you mentioned her thyroid condition being related to an eating disorder in the past.

  • @laurieanne9712

Yes, this fits perfectly with all the research I've done: only a whole food plant based diet will actually normalize the thyroid because it's free of all the animal hormones.

Why is this protein myth still alive and kicking?? There is more than enough protein in fruits and vegetables. When have you EVER seen anyone in a western country admitted to hospital because of protein deficiency? It just doesn't happen, unless they're starving, and then they're deficient in everything. However there are plenty of people in hospital for protein overload ie cancer, diabetes, heart disease... The meat and dairy industry really did a number on people in the 50s about protein, in order to sell more of their products. And it just won't quit. Please do your research on this. Your wife does NOT need protein powders. They're at best completely unnecessary and at worst, harmful to the body.
