Indeed. Michael McDonald's voice, vocal arrangement and songwriting ideas are unique to him. He's one of those songwriters (like Babyface), who is incapable of penning a song that doesn't couple some nice chord progression with an inescapable chorus/hook. Name one of their songs where you aren't singing along before the song is over...even if it's your first time hearing it?
Man's voice is Gold... that's the perfect reaction! For 20 years that man was Midas; Every Song he was involved with was a hit. His Voice and Keyboards were EVERyWHERE.
Asia's reaction at 2:15 is why I watch these videos. The moment she realizes how undeniably soulful Mike McD's voice is what gives me hope for the generation of cats like Asia and BJ, who ain't afraid to get it. Respect to y'all (and to Mike for writing this banger).

I love Micheal McDonald’s voice and this song 🔥He was the lead singer of the hit making Doobie Brothers before going solo. He is also a keyboardist and producer.
He’s also one of the greatest backup singers requested by many top notch singers.

Also, Michael Bolton has that slight raspy voice that you might like...try "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You". Also, Rod Stewart has that instantly recognizable raspy voice. And, Paul Young-"Every Time You Go Away" great song written by Hall & Oates.
Hands down one of the best Drum tracks EVER laid down. Mr. Jeff Porcaro! Story is, they did two takes and kept the first. The first!!! Dude was a freakin' MONSTER musician. Oh, and dig this, he broke a stick during the take.....true story y'all.

Worth noting I'm a huge fan of both tracks, I heard Warren G way before Michael, and they're both fans of one another, and that there was no bad blood about this song. But record companies love their money, so it wasn't out of the realm of possibility for me that they would jump at the chance to cash in on the royalties. Believable tale. So, hey, happy to be wrong/corrected on this one.

When he joined The Doobie Brothers it made their career and then on his own he did amazingly critically and it’s so out of any other voice structure than anyone else. But yes Regulator did steal that and it is a catchy song because of Michael McDonald period! He is so talented and gorgeous and generous to people it is amazing.
I heard Regulator first, and Asia's reaction was the same as mine. BJ helped me see why I now get this song as an adult

Before Michael McDonald was with the Doobies, he did a lot of backing vocals for Steely Dan. Also lent his voice to other artists back in the 70's, 80's. He was busy back then and has several other colab's with well known artists from many genres.

That song demonstrates that people can lay down whatever beat they want on a computer, but nothing beats a real player on real drums for creating genuine feel in ways that can't be done if the 'drummer' can't listen in a human way to the other instruments. There is no way to 'program' compassionate empathy into a robot's playing.
