Not as best as I can tell. Nothing smell related keeps deer away for long as best as I can tell. Not even something as smelly as malathion. My sense is that garlic keeps critters, especially raccoons and opossums, from finding the tree so quickly by masking the smell of ripening fruit. But they will find the tree if rotting fruit is allowed to sit on the ground under the tree.
