Update. The much easier way to open the globe is to use a hair dryer and focus on the white plug where the threads are to screw it back in the stick. Use mini flathead screwdrivers, like from eyeglass repair kits, and work them between threads and the white plug.

Thank you so much for the very funny edit!! And your subs - these guys are hilarious! I have yet to open mine as I haven't determined my design. It's something Kandinsky, harkening back to Dot Point Jump, but I'm not sure. I'm definitely not a princess/feather/garden type of girl, so gonna have to think it through. Squiggly lines, pop of color - on white, there's so much possibility!!
