As someone trying to write their own stuff, the way Shangri-La builds it's game mechanics into interesting power systems is down right inspiring. How Sunraku thinks about tool sets and abilities to then combine them in such interesting ways is just the coolest thing, and I want to write characters who think about their powers the same way.
And to your question on how the mangaka could make Shangri-La Frontier AND this Nephalim Mecha game feel more interesting than most any other game? I think it's a writing skill called inventory management. Basically, its the ability to remember and utilize the placement and use of various items, tools, and concepts, called narrative inventory, in a story after they've been mentioned, as well as knowing what kind of inventory makes narrative sense to already exist in the world you're writing. In this episode, the invisibility part is a good example of knowing what kind of tool it would need to be that both plausibly exists, but also what it would need to be like for it not to be used by everyone all of the time. That awareness of how game mechanics are discovered, discarded, and rediscovered and applying it to a narrative moment in a way that shows AMAZING inventory management is I think key to a fictional video game where the mechanics need to feel rewarding. How the author uses inventory is also clearly visible in the build Sunraku is making in Shangril-La Frontier right now. Building up his various skill sets, and him discovering them in a way that follows the same logic of how good games are made, are excellent uses of inventory to build an intelligent character. And narratively too, Pencilgon's ability to negotiate and manipulate people shows that she, as a character, can manage her in-game and social inventory extremely well. She can mentally hold so many different advantages, secrets, and bargaining chips in her mind at the same time because the writer can also think of those things as narrative inventory to be used wisely. Basically, the writer is a gamer for SURE, but they're ALSO an amazing narrative architect with how well they are constructing every little piece of the game worlds, mechanics, and social structures we see.
The difference in Animation between the Games is meant to represent that they are using different game engine. Which is why Shangri-La Frontier animation looks different compared to Nephilim Hollow.
I really liked the scene where Sunraku was reading Nephilim Hollow's story. As he admitted right after, he had skipped the story the first time around, so he forgot most of it. But now he reads it on his own accourd, for no reason apparently? He wasn't told to do it by Tamao helping him, that guy was even more comfused by what he was doing. He didn't really need to do it for gathering bot parts either. He just... wanted to? Which tells me, he's different now... He's already gone through some serious yet subtle character development. Even at the start of the anime, he skipped past Shangri-la Frontier's intro cutscene. He wasn't that much of a story gamer at the beginning of the series at all... which means, playing Shangri-la Frontier changed him. He's slowly starting to be more interested in the stories of the games he plays. I mean, can we blame him? With a game like Shangri-la Frontier that mixes gameplay and story elements so seemlessly, any one of us would be lore-masters lol. Even a Trash-game enjoyer like Sunraku can come around to like a good story in a game. Which is just even more brilliant writing from the author. This show keeps surprising me with how good it really is.
@@gamelover_mts4447 I agree. At the beginning, SLF gave me the impression that Sunraku was mainly, but not mostly, a “Hardcore Completionist” type of gamer whose guilty pleasure was playing buggy and trashy games, especially based on how dedicated he seems to completing extremely hardcore endings and achievements from the games he’s played. But now he’s becoming more and more engrossed in the stories of the games. I also actually really like how in our main trio, even though all of them are hardcore gamers. Even though all of them love and excel in a PVP setting, they are still hardcore in different aspects of games from each other: Sunraku is the Completionist, whether it’s a single or multiplayer game he will use and achieve anything possible in a game. Katzo’s passionate about Fighting Games, especially since he’s a pro gamer. And Pencilgon is the one who’s most into World Immersion. Whether she’s breaking game’s plot like in the dystopian game she was introduced in, or getting hooked by the provided plot as seen with Setsuna, and she’s also the first to point out that the key with Unique Monsters is in the story element.
Attack on Nerfilim Hollow... ☠ Sunraku building a nebiew looking build because he knew people will overlook it. He used he oponents power as its weakness. Causing a smokecreen and thinking he beat him just to get element of suprise and clip its wings and arm with his crab hand. Another example why the author knows how gamers think.
My hunch is they're establishing a good foundation for how skilled Sunraku will be once he gets his hands on the mech-like armor sets he's acquired (but can't use yet) in Shangri-La. Which is quite fun, of course I could also be completely wrong as I have never been able to predict anything that happens in this show (which is exciting in itself).
You make a very good point there. While I know he wants to get rid of the curse so he can use armor and all, it just wouldn't feel the same you know? Hopefully they figure out some kind of work around. Maybe something like how he can use that one ghost costume. Like a headband or like in the opening a mask/helmet. That would be cool.
Minor spoilers for the manga The curse sunraku has evolved after another fight with lycagon so he can equip armor but it only lasts a certain time before it breaks he hasn't used any of the mech suits though
If you read manga you know story is going more awesome. And if you read the light novels you know the story goes HARD!! Also author says they do a lot of research in all types of video gaming in making the story.
the thing is suunaku making new mecha build is based on his experience from SLF, his idea inspired from crystal scorpion with camouflage traits in SLF in season 1 So his build is a slow moving with stealth ability mecha that do a 1 hit kill move
Thanks for giving the attention needed for this anime that has been somehow outcasted this season from streamers and reactors without any sort of respect from it. Almost no one is talking about this show compared to season 1 (expect openings which ofc are bangers) but for everyone who's an anime watcher only its been amazing to see how creative the author dedicated to make not only 1 but a scenario where players will play multiple games in order to show dif games EXIST! Giving also its time to dedicate a certain episode only to discuss about a guild alliance/share info etc which is kinda cool.
when they talked about hit boxes and frame rates in the trash fighting game, i knew this was something special. It reminded me of Smash Melee, how Fox was bugged out to have a single frame of invulnerability for a specific move, and how that became a huge thing in the competitive scene. Oh and of course when Sunraku found the scorpion farming exploit and they silently patched it over night. I literally found a similar exploit in helldivers 2 when it first came out and used it to power level (went from level 5 to level 20 in one night), and arrowhead silently patched it a week later. You can tell the author genuinely understands how different games work and how players interact with them as a result. So refreshing to have an anime that actually knows how games AND gamers think.
When I saw that they changed/added to the intro speech, I knew we were gonna get a lot of Nephilm Hollow. I like they they used the intro to say that this is an arc, not just a one-off episode.

I cannot wait to see what and how they animate that, but I do not think they will get into the tournament until the beginning of a third season (or it would be better yet as a "mini" series or movie - even though a movie might be too short).
I'm thinking she will. I'm guess at this of course, but look at the ED. There is a character that's new to me WITH A SCAR. Seeing her in this game also with a scar makes me think that's her. Only time will tell.
I think the only thing that would have made this episode even better (especially since they interrupted in between the prologue and the opening) would have been to create a special opening for Nephilim Hollow. I know it might have been too much with the short turn around time between seasons, but remember during the first season, they made a special one off ending for Weathermon. I was sort of shocked that they made it into the fight. Was sort of thinking that they would have the fight in the next episode, or maybe cliff-hanger the missiles exploding and "destroying" Sunraku's armor. It is so fleshed out that I would'nt mind staying three episodes in this game, so I think they might be condensing it a bit down as I cannot see how the second half of the fight would take up a full episode.
I bet that if this game comes up with a sequel with a better engine the anime having 2d animation later would actually make the jump in graphics legit worth it.Also learning about how sunraku tends to goes for the eyes in boss battles with big monsters reminds me of kratos from old God of war.

Some of them at least have a respawn element with light horror to it. Slowly losing memories, feeling your whole body reassembling and it really hurts, that kind of stuff. This show comes the closest to accuracy for sure. I’m more familiar with games where town is basically a lobby instead of an integrated part of the game world though.

1000% agree, SF is Goated in video game anime, I will always have a love for SAO but every game in SAO is still just SAO with a twist. I thought I was going to hate the Mecha game filler arc but it was so good I wanted a full arc of it, and also every gamer understood that sometimes you just have to take a break from playing the same game for months on end and try a different game even just for a while.
Hey mate, first time listening to your channel. But I just wanted to say after watching this episode, I had to dust off the old PS2 and play Robotech Battlecry again. That mech scene flying through the city was just amazing. Anyways liked had to say and I'll probably be back. Live long and prosper.
Yeah, the fighting game reminds me of GunZ! I really see the way that he has proper understanding of video games that are actually good! And that's great! You're totally right! I felt the same thing! ^_^
I heard Takahashi Rie who voices Emilia is voicng a character in this arc and I think its the number 1 player in this robot game Also this anime is goated love it very much
@@kaisuzugamori4173 yeah she voiced rust, which mind blowing for me since she voiced rust who are the opposite character of what takahasi rie usually voiced. Though I found some similarities between rust's voice and pencilgon's, especially when she speak with loud noise, maybe takahasi rie take an inspiration from pencilgon's va on that part idk.
The show is called Shangri-la frontier though, if they want to do another game, make it a movie or something. It's irritating, waiting for episodes to be dubbed, only to find out he's left the freaking game. I'll just take a break and wait for him to get back to the shangri-la frontier. 🤷♂️

Hey mate, first time listening to your channel. But I just wanted to say after watching this episode, I had to dust off the old PS2 and play Robotech Battlecry again. That mech scene flying through the city was just amazing. Anyways liked had to say and I'll probably be back. Live long and prosper.
At first I think it's just "Oh, another sao copy" but after watching it, I can say that it's better than sao season 2.
Yeah, the fighting game reminds me of GunZ! I really see the way that he has proper understanding of video games that are actually good! And that's great! You're totally right! I felt the same thing! ^_^
Next 2 arcs gonna go crazy. Every big fight is going to feel like a reset, believe me 🔥
Kicker? I think most fun game is the one that has yet to come XD.
I heard Takahashi Rie who voices Emilia is voicng a character in this arc and I think its the number 1 player in this robot game
Also this anime is goated love it very much
@@kaisuzugamori4173 yeah she voiced rust, which mind blowing for me since she voiced rust who are the opposite character of what takahasi rie usually voiced. Though I found some similarities between rust's voice and pencilgon's, especially when she speak with loud noise, maybe takahasi rie take an inspiration from pencilgon's va on that part idk.
Guy who made the anime should makf all the games from it. I het they're gonna be better than some other ones that have been out for years
If this anime was born before SAO there might be a chance that SAO become a more better anime
u guys might try Armored core 6 rubicon if u need robot games that u can modify many parts & Engage in battle.
Just wait till we get the GGC arc then
Another episode without emul and pencilgon. Good one but i think its losing some appeal to me.
Shit reminded me of armored core
God I wish I could play this game!
You might like armored core
The show is called Shangri-la frontier though, if they want to do another game, make it a movie or something. It's irritating, waiting for episodes to be dubbed, only to find out he's left the freaking game. I'll just take a break and wait for him to get back to the shangri-la frontier. 🤷♂️
LMFAO
It's Pokemon X Medabots X AoT
Dude i even want to play the other trashy games he's playing 😂
