  • Omote-uchi (Protective Temporary Lining)
To prevent breaking/flaking from occurring, we do a process called "omote-uchi" which is a technique used for deeply damaged painting and National Important Cultural Property.
This is how it works. First, we protect the surface of the painting with a Japanese paper. A special glue is used as an adhesive to make it easy to remove the facing paper later. Once it's dry, we will remove old backings and apply the 1st backing(new paper). After the 1st backing is finished, we will remove the paper covering the surface of the painting.

    Sugoi! Amazing work!
Do you have any resources for hobbyists restoring art in their free time? Where are some good places to buy art and supplies for practice in restoration?
I am a graphic artist and carpenter by trade and I admire the delicacy and patience of this process in preserving the craftsmanship of old masters!
