The gear pump was very cool and one type of pump I️ was not familiar with. Do not hesitate to add that level of detail to your videos. The viewers of similar mindset to yourself, the nerdy ones, will love it 🤓
Aaaaaaah! I almost forgot how pretty obelix turned out. Also at 12:00, I enjoy the "cleaned sep 2009." Very comforting.

You called ATHENA the new boat Obelisk when you were getting ready to drain the diesel tank. Just a thought maybe you could use some time away from the boats. You have done some really nice work refitting the new boat . I can't believe how much time and money you have spent rebuilding the boat . I guess what I admire the most is how you never seem to let things get you down or become overwhelmed when you encounter more problems with your boat project . I hope you get to enjoy the new boat very soon . Keep up the great work you doing it really makes for a great vlog . See You
Wishing you a very merry Christmas Mads. Congratulations for achieving as much as you have this year, and best wishes for getting Athena afloat in 2018.
more tips for emptying tanks: often there is a pre-fitted line going going from the tank through a filter to the engine. You can attach a pump to these, even a cheapo 12v automotive fuel pump does the trick(slowly). Sometimes you even get away with gravity feeding. Another need trick is to pressurize the tank breather (be careful with that). happy holidays!
LOVE LOVE LOVE that you showed some scenic shots of your marina while putting up the Christmas lights. Thank you for that and for deciding not to use that cheap looking piece of plastic garbage for hatch trim. We dont say much but we watch your videos every week. Merry Christmas from Carol & Lance aboard sv Syrah in Victoria, BC.
As another holiday season reminds us of enjoyable time with friends and family, I thank you for allowing all to follow your nautical DIY adventures. Warmest wishes to you and yours throughout the Christmas holiday season. May calm seas and fair winds follow you in the continuing years. Merry Christmas.
In the USA the Insurance Companies require removing copper fuel lines. The vibrations of the engine causes metal stress and possible fire during operation. Best to use marine diesel approved fuel hoses. Enjoyed following your redo on the deck project. Before I purchase my next sailboat I will do a very careful deck and hull inspection. You did show me that a major job can be DIY by going step by step and not rushing to fast to finish. Nice work.
The borderline poetic incitement when it comes to smelly liquids and how You are about to force them changing their containments ... a very good reason to watch, in deed. Merry lightsmas, Mr Mads.
We used vane pumps for the same in the Navy. Both types are positive displacement. They do not pull a vacuum dry very well. They can however create HUGE head pressure, well enough to rupture lines and even steel tanks. A recycling line with a pop off valve between the inlet and the outlet set to a LOW pressure should be used with those. This is actually a good time to think about fuel filtering recycling system with a few big assed filters on a manifold with a selector valve. You will need TWO lines (total) in and out of each tank to recycle a single tank when both are full. A vent line from each of the tanks into the bilge is a very good safety item. Do not put ANY valve on that as it will remain open at all times. Our tanks had sea water ballasting. As the fuel flowed out the sea flowed in and the outlets were at the top of the tanks and they cascaded in series into one another in banks. After I left (thank God) somebody forgot to open the inter-tank transfer valve and a tank ruptured and flooded out a berthing compartment with fuel. NOT a fun thing at all. That was the boiler fuel, I tended the aviation fuel tanks and the testing, purification and delivery of that. Purifying fuel by recycling it through a filter bank should be avoided at sea. I did it all the time at sea, but that,,,,,,was different as we had no choice. It should be done at anchor or pier side under calm conditions to avoid spillage. That pump can literally produce hundreds of PSI and your fuel line connections, tubing nor tanks are any match for it if your valve alignment is not correct when transferring fuel. NEVER walk away from a running fuel pump operation, stay at the pump controls even when you are recirculating a single tank that seems to have plenty of room for the fuel. ANYTHING can happen and does happen when people think for whatever reason they can safely walk away from an operation like that.
For some reason i thought you were going to click your fingers and the engine was going to be out....i think that every one is doing that. I do like the fact that you are doing things in so much detail......the stop take screws marching across the deck was nice work well done.
Almost forgot what the inside of your other boat looked like at the start there. Nice to see Jökull again. Hopefully will be feeling up to his usual self pretty soon. Lights look good on the boat... and boats. Merry Christmas!
Happy Christmas Mads. Thanks for sharing. Truly excellent channel. What you found stressful this year, I'd have found impossible. On the one hand I'll be delighted for you when we see Athena's maiden voyage but on the other hand that means I'll miss my Sunday night update. Hmmm.
Mads, Merry Christmas to you too! Thanks for all the great videos you have inspired me to try some of these things on my own boats. I can't wait to see how you get the engine and fuel tank out. It looks like there is not a lot of room to work.
Mads, Merry Christmas and all the best of wishes to you and Urkle (?). As I say to my wife, if I did not enjoy the repair work I would not have bought and old boat. All the best for 2018. Love the videos. Good to see someone else doing repairs also.
As always, great content. I have been thinking about installing one or two diesel tanks to increase my range. I went ahead and bought the pump you recommended and now just have to figure out where to get a custom tank made. Can’t wait to see you tackle the problem since I will copy freely. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you and yours Mads. On your pump the gear pump is the most versatile of them all and the most robust. They take debris going through them far better than vain or piston pumps and if you get the rubber gear ones then they are just fine with it. They use the when sucking water out of ditches and as you can imagine that is where a lot of stuff gets pushed through them and they are just fine. About the only downside to a gear pump is it's fixed displacement, but i digress. Great video Mads can't wait till next week
Your channel inspires me to realise my dream of living on a boat. You make it seem possible and that is amazing thankyou! Keep it up man love it! Happy winter festival!
I put a tee and valve on my engine diesel fuel line for draining the tank. I just hose-clamp on a hose connected to a pump and do about what you did. The idea being to just use the existing line going into the tank.
Merry Christmas Mads. Wishing you all the best and looking forwards like all to the ongoing rebuild of Athena in the New Year. Cheers from Hobart, dave
Hi Mads. Looks like things are progressing but the cold continues to be a struggle! You might be interested in a clever tip in the current issue of Practical Sailor (Jan 2018) where they recommend cutting out bubble wrap in the shape of your ports and adhering it by first spraying on a light mist of water to the glass. Makes sense that bubble wrap would be nice effective insulator and still allow light to pass through. In PS' typical, fastidious review they write " the R-value is low, only about 1.2, but for single glazed windows that cuts the heat loss in half." Glen
Just be careful because gear pumps don’t like aerated liquid. If aerated liquid his put through the gear pump too often it will start cavitating and eventually wear out. I wouldn’t worry about it too much but just keep in the back your mind. Looks like a nice pump and it wasn’t cheap so take care of it. If you were thinking of using it later on to transfer liquids from tank to tank on a daily or weekly basis make sure that the inlet the pump is always filled with liquid and this will keep it from sucking air and cavitating. Also never block off the outlet flow in less you have a relief valve or the pump will destroy itself lol. Love your videos keep up the good work!
Merry Christmas Mads. Seeing your lights really puts me in the Christmas spirit. I just hope those cheap strings of lights don't fail and leave your halyard at the top of the mast. Also, like you, I too get exited about pump designs. That one seemed perfect for the job (zero leakage, self priming, good flow output, etc.). One other thing - you really should get a "nut driver" dedicated for hose clamps. They are a joy to use - especially in tight quarters. Ron
Thanks for geeking out about pumps. As an engineer I find myself getting excited about things that most people just don't seem to care about.
7:46 Nice shout out to AvE!
That seems like a really good quality pump you got. Pretty quite! And YES, pumps ARE mechanically interesting!
Got my Sail Life polo shirt for Christmas. Quality is great I will wear it proudly.

Pumper are pretty interesting things in engineering.. I agree. Glad to see you're having some fun.
Merry Xmas Mads. Celebrating in the middle of summer in the southern hemisphere.
Obelisk is looking pretty festive!

Merry Christmas Mads. Yeah I get the whole pump thing. Lots of ways to move fluid around. Some more interesting than others for sure.
