  • The Icom 7300 has a great microphone right out of the box, but if you want to have both hands free you might be looking for a broadcast-style microphone that you mount on a boom. I’m using a Heil PR781 microphone and a ART Studio V3 Tube Preamplifier. This combination gives me amazing results and I get complements all the time on my audio. If you’re looking for a pre-amp, I highly recommend the ART Studio V3 Tube Pre-Amp. #HamRadio #Icom7300 #Preamplifier

48v phantom power is not needed on the PR-781 since it's a dynamic mic. If you have the ability to leave it off I'd do that but I'd at least clarify that the 781 does not need phantom power so not to confuse your viewers. Otherwise cool video.

With the power mods done on it this mic is just awwsome and no need to look to find a better one. The Body of the MH-219 is solid and feels comfy holding it in my hands! I actually run the Heil HMM for iCOM only. Those Mics are rare and hard to find

It allows you to have more control of your audio, and also the ability to back away from the 781 so you dont need to swallow it. Without a preamp you need to be right on the mic, with a preamp you can adjust so you can sit back 6”-12” and still get great audio.

The combination of the CC-1-XLR-I + the ART Tube MP studio V3 microphone preamplifier + Heil PR-781 also works very nicely with the Icom IC-9700. Good reports on both FM and SSB.

    Hi there K0LWC,
Great presentation! I've decided to follow in your footsteps regarding: a boom-mounted mic with a preamp feeding my IC-7300. Your video helped solidify my gear choice. I've had a couple of the AMP Tube preamps (different models) in the past, and they're great. Sometime when you have a few minutes, could you describe the wiring \ cabling \ and connectors needed to duplicate your setup in this video?
Thanks for the great video, and thanks in advance for any details you could provide.

I use a dynamic mic called the Shure SM7B. This mic requires a lot of gain so I use a Cloudlifter CL-1. The Cloudlifter CL-1 boosts the mic gain 20db so you dont have to physically boost your mic gain on the IC-7300 radio. I turn my mic gain on the IC-7300 to 25% and the Cloudlifter CL-1 boosts the IC-7300 output gain to about 85% even the the mic gain on the IC-7300 is physically set to 25%. I also use the DBX 286 for compression if needed. It also has a voice enhancer (High and Low). I even use/added a focusrite 2i2.

Bob Heil recommends a capacitor in line on the hot pin.. Is this mod necessary to prevent damage to the audio circuit going through the front mic jack?. You can also go through the back of the radio without causing any damage to the radios front end audio circuit ..

    • @ZonaEA

the capacitor is used to prevent current/voltage (i am not sure) from radio to the mixer/microphone. this current/voltage is used to feed electrec or condenser mics.... +8V on icom's

Depending on what version scarlet focusrite that is in thr background you have you could have just used that as a preamp. They have trs line level output which you could use to drive the mic input on the 7300.btw Alot of that low end you hear in your headphones from the preamp is not going to be heard over the air. For ssb KISS is all you need. A clean punchy signal is much more important than a boomy muddy tone that no one will copy.

As an audio enthusiast myself, it turns out i already have most of the audio equipment to actually do this. Will definitely be trying this out once I get the right cable adapter for my rig. I’m curious how the signal is being routed through your system. I see your connected the mic to the input in the preamp. Then you’re going out of the line out with Heil adapter to the radio? Do you have not have any issues with distortion or anything since your sending a line level into the radio? I also see that you’ve got the scarlet in the background as well. Do you happen to use that in the chain somewhere?

"...as SSB operators we don't need to be [worried about all that high fidelity].."
Yet, there is that EXTERNAL preamplifier, that gives you that "WARM SOUND..." 🤔🤣
Truth be told, those tiny [cheap] units do not provide a true "warm" sound. There just isn't enough high voltage on the tube to gain the true potential, or "warmth". For that you'll need to step into higher tiers of audio processing. And yes, you CAN hear that difference within the ICOM brickwalled bandwidth.
Still enjoyed this presentation, though a year later. Keep these nicely produced videos rolling. 😎👍

Wait a minute! You run a DYNAMIC mic with the Phantom power on? Dynamic mics don't need phantom power! Phantom power is for Condenser and Electret mics (and the occasional ribbon mic with a built-in amp 'cause the output is too low without one.)
Usually it does no harm to have phantom power on, but there are a few classic/antique dynamic mics out there that phantom power will ruin.

Most multboxes these days all send phantom power, whether the mic needs it or not. If it’s balanced it’s not an issue.

Hiel pr781 is a dynamic mic and does not use phantom power? Your advising people to run 48v into there dynamic mic this is stupid. Condenser mics sure they need it not heil mics

The RODE POD MIC is better mike. The HEIL PR781 is worse microphone.

      You need a few things:
      - The Studio V3
      - XLR microphone cable (male to female)
      - Heil CC-1-XLR-I Adapter Cable
You'll run the XLR cable from the microphone to the Studio V3 input. Then you'll plug the XLR end of the Heil CC-1-XLR into the output of the Studio V3 and that connects to the 8-pin mic port on the front of your 7300.
      Mic --> Studio V3 --> Radio
