When I fit golfers, it's all about dispersion - from the center of the clubface, and the landing area. If you can find a shaft that allows you strike precisely and consistently, a lot of other factors take care of themselves. Use foot spray, not impact tape. Jim's video pretty much explains that.
This is a terrific video...there's so much variation of option on the web even by manufacturers- its confusing as hell. I was fit for ctaper 120 stiff but it was like swing a pole. I played SOOOO much better with my 109g S flex CFS from ping (oem) I went back to them. The ctaper i pulled everything left and low. The 109 CFS i had a lovely high fade...93mph 7i .
Informative video! The shaft absolutely matters...especially when it's a difficult one to find. Thanks again for all your effort in building my club. Will update once it arrives and I get a chance to test it out. Thanks to you and Robin!
I totally agree that the phrase "The golf shaft is the engine" is simply not accurate. It truly is the transmission. I know it is all semantics but I have heard that phrase for years and never agreed with it. Great video. Thanks, and I plan on giving Glade Springs a visit.
Wow, those are all very light shafts. I agree with the shaft being the transmission not the engine. I am a high ball hitter and swung a Modus 105 for a few years. I recently spent some time with both the 105 and 120 stiff and found the 120 to produce better distance, slightly lower launch with roughy the same spin and decent angle. For me the lighter is better adage did not hold true. With the 120 and a set of baby blades I got my launch from 22-24 degrees down to 20-22 and picked up 10 yards of carry.
Totally agree, shafts are only transmission tools. I recentlly changed my Mizuno JPX 850 forged iron shafts from Dynamic gold s300 stiff to Aerotech Fibre 95. I found that my dispersion was greatly reduced which seems to go against your findings in the latest video, I would appreciate your comments. My current swing speed with my irons is 82pmh.
Hey , how those i95's working out, ... from my research, i95's are much more midsection stiffer than any dg, outside x100. ... can you feel the stiffer mid, from your comment sounds like stronger mid is really working out for yah.
I have mizuno 919 hot metal pros with kbs 110. I hit 7 iron about 180 yards but I don’t think I get enough spin, seems like knuckle balls. I’m former college golfer and in my mid 30’s now, play as 6 handicap. I went on the quest for distance
I’ve been fitted three times and the fitters have always recommend stiff shafts. Maybe it’s because I’m swinging in a relaxed state on the fitting range but in reality I prefer and play better with a regular shaft. I find I am trying to force the stiff shaft all the time. Maybe I just need to relax on the course.
@@McGolf Thanks for the kind word! I'll keep plugging away since most of the schools are gone. Are you a member of any national clubfitting associations?
Interesting about the shafts as my Pro recommended a lighter shaft because at the top of the swing I had a habit of dropping it onto my shoulder, even tho I couldn’t feel it. It was only recently that I swapped out the DG300 S for the Nippon NS PRO 850 which, as a lighter shaft and the weight of the head, does that create a fulcrum to swing harder? Unfortunately, I now don’t play enough to benefit from the changes ☹️ Great videos Jim, keep it going 👍
Help me Mac. I'll talk to you before I cannot hit these Tacoma KBS tour regular shafts because I'm too damn old and there are a lot of Accra graphite pull outs on eBay could you recommend a range I should look at for my age at 80 and can't hit it out of my shadow. I am guessing a senior flex with the lightest shaft but I don't know. I cannot afford to have a fitting.
I have been looking for adapters to change 1 head for several shafts like they do in the bigger fitting stores, I noticed they are in your shafts and heads, could you tell me where you got them? Great videos, I watch a couple everyday and learn something new each time Thanks
Many thanks for a really interesting vid. I liked your description of the shaft as being the "transmission", perhaps another way to think of the shaft is that it is a "timing device"? It was also interesting to see how similar your Spin and peak height numbers were, yet as the shaft weight increased your strike improved as the weight began to match up with your swing characteristics. PS As a user of Graphite shafts I'm interested to know how the KBS TGI shafts "feel"? I find that some graphite shafts can feel a little "dead" if the shaft profile doesn't match with your swing characteristics.
Very interesting. I have recently replaced my clubs as I was over powering the iron shafts (at least that was the excuse I gave the wife!). I have a question. I am getting my driver shaft shortened from 45.25" to 44.5" (no speed difference but a massive difference in being able to feel where the club head is). Will that have any effect on the flex of the shaft? Will it stiffen the shaft slightly?
@@McGolf awesome, looking forward to it. I'm starting to learn more about shafts now, and I'm noticing oems, and others talk up tip, and but sections, but not much on the midsection parameters of shafts.
I may have missed it but was this a 7iron? the swing speed basics on the TGI (for 6iron) gives 95 at 85 to90mph and the 100 at 90/95mpg. you were swinging 91(and would be faster if you were swinging a 6 over a 7) so it would have been interesting to see you test a 100 that covers your 91 swing speed and also a 110 that's above your swing speed to show if going too far that way made things worse again.
Nice video very informative. A cheeky couple of questions if I may happy to pay for response if you need to charge. Q1 I currently game Wilson FG Tour F5 irons with a Dynamic Gold XP S300 and I was at a test day session and the pro fitter picked C300 with a KBS Tour 90 Steel Regular shaft. I prefer the feel of the F5's is there much difference between these shafts. My swing was approx 80mph 7 iron on test day and a smooth transition. Q2 If I changed the shafts in the F5 (I have asked Wilson but no reply as yet) would the KBS tour fit into the F5's seen sets of .370 for sale. Thanks for your help.
So after all this mumbo jumbo what did we come up with. The 90 or 95 g shaft fits your swing. Does it fit anybody else's swing. No offense but your swing is starting to look a lot like mine and so does your waist size. I am 80 years old so I think you can swing a lot faster but I wish I could have gotten more out of this review because I'm not sure what swing weight you like. I have the KBS tour regular I just ordered with my Takomo 101 irons and when I hit it good it feels great but it's not repeatable and I think that is my problem with balance. I don't even know what weight those shelves are KBs tour regular
Hey Jim! How do you go about fitting a very inconsistent golfer for clubs? This is something I've struggled with while fitting people, albeit, I'm relatively new (2 years) to fitting. Thanks!
T. Reed it depends on reason for inconsistency, if it’s a swing issue then we stop and work on the issue. If it obviously an equipment issue I try to get them into what I initially guess to what can work and tweak from there
don't get stuck on just height, its wrist to floor that matters. you can be tall with very long arms and need clubs shorter than a short guy with very short arms.
I’m a lefty too. Man, that was a real eye opener… great video!
I wish I knew of a golf fitter with your expertise where I live. Very informative
Check with your local pro shop, lots of the teaching pros are also good at building clubs.

Love the message and content. Shaft is NOT the engine. Great video 👍
Great information, Always enjoy your content. Unbelievable how much goes into club building and fitting.
Another great mcgolf video. Jim is getting pretty artsy with that through the window footage! Great original content.
Such great information, a real professional. Do you fit any pro's.? Really enjoy your videos 👍
Neil Cavendish fitting a pronwould be cool, I have been on a tour trailer only for a few days.

Older but still a great video as always. How does the TM Burner 2 irons shaft comare to the KBS Max shaft?

Bandit Baker you are correct. The best way to describe the shaft is solid.
@@McGolf 👍Many thanks
I rather play the perfect shaft for me in a crappy head, than the other way around. The shaft is the most critical thing to a club IMO.
Have u tried TT Elevate Tour? Good feel for me.
great data!

working on shaft info now with a company.

dongolfnut the FG tour, has a taper tip shaft the .370 would not fit directly.
Great video.
Jim, Another great video. My question is, what do you think of these stability putter shafts? Thanks
Paul Van Vleet I haven’t used one personally however, if it’s a bit heavier or weighted in hands it can’t be bad

Lightest weight most flexible shaft that you can control!
But I'm a MAN, must have heavy and stiff!!! (joke)
So how was the feel with those heavier graphite kbs shafts..?
i think the feel at impact is awesome
Awesome content. Question:. How many times do you change your gamer equipment? Hope all is well.
Matt Revilock thanks, I change when something comes better.
The transmission. From Wishon's philosophy right?
He certainly believes in that for sure, we have discussed the idea on many occasions.

Question? What the difference between a R300 and a kbs tour 90 stiff shaft?
About 40 grams.
So does that make a huge difference In performance?
Hi Wilson just replied and said taper tip heads.
Do you keep all the obvious miss hits? Could you explain why? Thanks
11golfnut11 I go over all the hits with the golfer then remove the error to get a better stat number
Does having shorter iron length (due to no custom fitting esp for taller guys) make a difference?
121jgw yes and most certainly,
don't get stuck on just height, its wrist to floor that matters. you can be tall with very long arms and need clubs shorter than a short guy with very short arms.
Did you use the same brand golf ball on all shots.?
Paul Kaye yes Wilson range balls

I stand on the right side of the ball
up to at least 10 speeds ;-)
