Actually some people might have that stuff in their pantry. It's just alum which is used for pickling stuff. You could buy it in a supermarket in the spice aisle pretty easily if you wanted to.

You don't have to use the chromium potassium sulfate, you can use food coloring. Aluminum potassium sulfate is in the spices aisle of your grocery store labeled as alum.
Two improvements: First, put a piece of cheesecloth over the top of the beaker. This will cut down on dust getting into the solution, and will minimize the number of unwanted crystals growing in the experiment. Second, once you have a medium-size crystal, make a new batch of solution using only the non-chrome version of the sulphate. Transfer the crystal to the clear solution, and you will grow a clear crystal with a purple heart.
N337av G#o5h “In the chemical formula for water (H2O), what does the number 2 mean? Science for Youth May 16, 2011. The number 2 indicates that there are two atoms of hydrogen in a molecule of water. There is also one atom of oxygen but the number one is omitted from a chemical formula.”

Potassium chromium can easily be found on the internet (try Amazon) and is typically sold for the purpose of crystal growing.

Can i replace the chromium potassium sulfate with the potassium permanganate, cause i can't get them here in Vietnam ? Btw thanks for the video :3 it was really nice
+chí bách trần There's also the fact that permanganate should be able to oxidise the chromium in the salt, probably to dichromate, forming the brown precipitate as well. If you're unable to import some chrome alum into Vietnam (there's none here in Australia either), purple food colouring might be your best option :)
I was looking for a way to make a replica resurrection stone for my Harry Potter cosplay, this is the best thing I've seen so far. For mine I think I'm gonna hang a little Deathly Hallows symbol from the string too so that the symbol becomes embedded in the stone like you see in the movie
This is SO COOL! Is there anything else that I could coat these with that doesn't give the streaky effect of nail polish? Like would a spray sealant work?
If you want to go really low-tech and low-cost, I've had success with just pouring a bottle of polish into one of those spray bottles you can pick up for $1, then adding a bit of polish remover to thin it. Shake it up to mix well and you have some instant polish spray paint that will give you a smooth finish.
I know you've already gotten answers but heh I want to add another possible option. I'm not sure how it would affect the crystals, but you could also try to use sculpey glaze and coat it in a few layers. If you coat it evenly, it will be nice and smooth.
I guess to make it perfectly, you'd have to do it in 0 gravity, so that you wouldn't need to suspend it from a string, but it wouldn't sink to the bottom if there was a crystal in the middle.
I looked up the warnings, ya you could eat it without dying. It probably tastes like hell and would likely make you sick. But that amount would be unlikely to kill you unless you had some kind of complicating factor.
i often do it because i keep getting suggestions of videos i dont care for, this stops youtube from recommending me things i dont want to see. but i think some people dislike this vid because its almost inpossible to understand everything he is saying. i personally dont dislike vids often unless the quality is really bad or when its filthy click bait.
He has a soft spoken accent. Very friendly voice. He can definitely Give a lecture. But of course would probably need a boom lol. But very calm smooth voice. His voice has a nice pace. Accent not a really big deal. Forget about the accent he is a genius :)
Yes, once you cut it, you can seal it with laquer, and such but the original one will alway be inside the crystal... you could use medical thread, that disolves with time, but it may dissolve before getting a crystal that size.
They fall apart really easy. That was the point of the clear nail polish and that will not hold it together if treated roughly at all. Its basically the same strength of rock candy or sea salt.
The crystal shown in the video? no. A much larger crystal? yes. What you would do is drill into it from the bottom then get some LED lights and put them inside. DIY nightlight?
Black Rain ionic crystals have insanely high melting points, if anything, I'm more concerned about the led crying the crystal out over time, causing it to crumble from the inside...
derek xiao well you dont have to drill it ...just use a clump of clay and a pen light or lazer pointer, make sure button is on bottom so you can still turn it on and off, but recessed so it can sit on the table. And press one point of Crystal in the top , not too deep. And night light.
absolutely beautiful and I would LOVE to they this but (and PLEASE do not take this the wrong way) I did not understand the chemicals to use. I got aluminum something but that is it. G Perhaps for us harder to understand types you could put directions at the bottom? Warmest regards and best wishes, Michelle B.
I would like to see a crystal sword. The real question is how big can these things be grown? Once it's large enough I'm sure it could be (professionally) molded to whatever shape you desire.
uhuju1 Crystals of salts (ionic compounds) are generally very brittle so you would have trouble shaping them also the growth cant be molded because the structure of the molecules is very specific and will only form one shape after a certain amount of growth.
bruno alves everyone is different. Just because you understand it doesn't mean I will. If you can understand, good for you, but I'm not speaking on behalf of you, just for others who are in the same situation as I am.
It's okay, I'm not offended. I just wanted you to know that it's not anything unusual that you understand and I don't. It's just that each person perceives things differently.
Hi, your site is awesome. I'm learning a chemical that can be man-made. I've learned to clean different types of minerals and some on rocks. Thank you for sharing your experience and sharing you with us your video. God Bless.
Salt is the easiest crystal to grow but know table salt makes a different shape from these (which grows similarly to alum salt, which can be found in the spice/salt section of any grocery store sold as pickling salt) Epsom salt is harder to make a singular crystal, but they grow rectangular like rutile and table salt grow in cubes. Alum salt grows like a diamond in this vid
It depends reeally, the way the crystals would grow on it would be through small holest and non-even surfaces.. So if your marble is a little rough, it would be possible.. (please note that the crystal will not continue the shape of the crystal, but take its natural form until it is obstructed by something)
Anyone try drilling with a tiny diamond point bit? If not that, maybe try wrapping some thin jewelry wire around the fishing line and loop it at where you expect the top of your crystal to be, and let it grow around it.
now thats some items everyone has at home
Excited! (Idk if you sarcastic but I actually have the stuff at home)

Alum is a common home ingredient actually, that's the substance that crystallizes into an octahedron. Borax forms a neat structure too.
Alum powder is used in baking and be acquired easily at most grocery stores and walmart for sure.. alum powder is a salt..
alum is in your spice section of your grocery store. .. it gets coated because it will degrade in humid air....

I sure do hope you're generally more honest to her about things.
Is the fishing line just stuck on the inside of the crystal forever?
Yes, once you cut it, you can seal it with laquer, and such but the original one will alway be inside the crystal... you could use medical thread, that disolves with time, but it may dissolve before getting a crystal that size.
I was thinking about putting the seed on a chain or something to wear as a necklace. Saves me from having to inset it.
Thanks for the info :)
You have no idea how fragile these are do you?
+Fatguydoingstuff I don't
They fall apart really easy. That was the point of the clear nail polish and that will not hold it together if treated roughly at all. Its basically the same strength of rock candy or sea salt.
I've never been to this channel before so I was expecting a tumblr hipster chick using the Borax method but I was pleasantly surprised 😊
My Grandsons have a new project after seeing this. It will be fun.

where can I buy all that stuff
I know this is off topic but...
Does anyone like his accent? No? Okay :(
+Chlorox Bleach i do
plus when he says "shiny surface" it sounds like "shiny shurfash" and i think thats sorta funny
does anyone like you? probably not, but you do not see us complaining about it.
ok then, try speaking fluent mandarin and lets see how you sound...
Воу, даже не подумал бы, что ты делаешь видео на английском. Продолжай, вижу что многим людям интересно)
Does it glow under UV light? As it has chromium ions in this Crystal.
wondering if you can drill a hole in it, stick an LED light in there, make a nice stand, and use it as a night light.
The crystal shown in the video? no. A much larger crystal? yes. What you would do is drill into it from the bottom then get some LED lights and put them inside. DIY nightlight?
I feel like you just reworded what I said in my comment lmao
derek xiao You could, but you would have to protect the inside because it would melt
I love purple~~
absolutely beautiful and I would LOVE to they this but (and PLEASE do not take this the wrong way) I did not understand the chemicals to use. I got aluminum something but that is it. G
Perhaps for us harder to understand types you could put directions at the bottom?
Warmest regards and best wishes,
Michelle B.
Michelle Bolen he has written everything in the description box.
Zellafy thank you! this is weird when I first looked it would not show me the description.
Can I add some phosporas to it to make it glow .
it's so weird how it grows in such a perfect shape with sharp edges!!
is there any way to mold these? i'd like to make a spherical one
or even a sword
IMAGINE
omg
I would like to see a crystal sword. The real question is how big can these things be grown? Once it's large enough I'm sure it could be (professionally) molded to whatever shape you desire.
uhuju1 Crystals of salts (ionic compounds) are generally very brittle so you would have trouble shaping them also the growth cant be molded because the structure of the molecules is very specific and will only form one shape after a certain amount of growth.
The answer to all your questions is no.
They grow in square forms only.
uhuju1 thank godnim not the only one with a huge mind😂
Hello! I really love your videos, and I don't mean to be rude, but pleeeease add subtitles to your videos next time?
English is not my main language but I still can understand him fine. Try to pay more attention or something.
bruno alves everyone is different. Just because you understand it doesn't mean I will. If you can understand, good for you, but I'm not speaking on behalf of you, just for others who are in the same situation as I am.
Ashton Levry Hum sorry if I offended you, it wasn't my intention. I just though it was funny tha I could understand him and you didn't. ):
It's okay, I'm not offended. I just wanted you to know that it's not anything unusual that you understand and I don't. It's just that each person perceives things differently.
Ashton Levry Yeah you are right. Sorry for sounding quite rude.
Hi, your site is awesome. I'm learning a chemical that can be man-made. I've learned to clean different types of minerals and some on rocks. Thank you for sharing your experience and sharing you with us your video. God Bless.
Salt is the easiest crystal to grow but know table salt makes a different shape from these (which grows similarly to alum salt, which can be found in the spice/salt section of any grocery store sold as pickling salt)
Epsom salt is harder to make a singular crystal, but they grow rectangular like rutile and table salt grow in cubes. Alum salt grows like a diamond in this vid
If I never get the chance to make that I will hate myself forever...I just love science...😋
I'll go show it in a science fair. It's kinda cool bruh. :)
Marlon Nahial oh yes that would be cool :D
Looks a lot like Starbound's Erchius Crystals.
Jonas Grandt that's exactly what I was thinking!
it does!
its beautiful and well prepared ...the science of solid state is enigmatic
If you were to hang something in the solution, like maybe a marble or small plastic figure, would crystals grow on it?
It depends reeally, the way the crystals would grow on it would be through small holest and non-even surfaces.. So if your marble is a little rough, it would be possible.. (please note that the crystal will not continue the shape of the crystal, but take its natural form until it is obstructed by something)
i thought at the end you were going to throw it out the window
This man is so cool that he says colourless instead of clear.
Dude you're the best!!! I love your videos :)

I wonder if you could put a hole through the center, so you could thread a wire or string through it for hanging.
i was wondering the same thing, a necklace or bracelet made out of these things would be really cool
ElveeKaye no they're not very durable. you could try but youd most likely end up cracking it in half no matter how gentle u are.
i tried it... all 10 that i tried it with broke sadly
Anyone try drilling with a tiny diamond point bit? If not that, maybe try wrapping some thin jewelry wire around the fishing line and loop it at where you expect the top of your crystal to be, and let it grow around it.
Growing a crystal is like growing precious children.
