    Two improvements: First, put a piece of cheesecloth over the top of the beaker. This will cut down on dust getting into the solution, and will minimize the number of unwanted crystals growing in the experiment. Second, once you have a medium-size crystal, make a new batch of solution using only the non-chrome version of the sulphate. Transfer the crystal to the clear solution, and you will grow a clear crystal with a purple heart.

      You mean you don't have access to uranium? Maybe I'm special but I have lots of uranium. I even have gold and other precious elements like platinum. I keep it in my muscles, teeth, bones, and the rest of my body. If you were to extract and concentrate these trace elements, every person is carrying around a few gold nuggets and uranium nuggets worth on them. But if you are so deprived, go smoke a cigarette. The tobacco plant absorbs many metals from the soil, that get released when combusted, and absorbed by a smokers body. Lead, mercury, you name it.

    • @Thoisoi2
      @Thoisoi2  9 років тому +33

      +chí bách trần Think not, potassium permanganate can decompose in the solution, forming brown precipitate of manganese dioxide.

    • @nickturner5721
      @nickturner5721 9 років тому +13

      +chí bách trần There's also the fact that permanganate should be able to oxidise the chromium in the salt, probably to dichromate, forming the brown precipitate as well. If you're unable to import some chrome alum into Vietnam (there's none here in Australia either), purple food colouring might be your best option :)

      If you want to go really low-tech and low-cost, I've had success with just pouring a bottle of polish into one of those spray bottles you can pick up for $1, then adding a bit of polish remover to thin it. Shake it up to mix well and you have some instant polish spray paint that will give you a smooth finish.

      I would like to see a crystal sword. The real question is how big can these things be grown? Once it's large enough I'm sure it could be (professionally) molded to whatever shape you desire.

      uhuju1 Crystals of salts (ionic compounds) are generally very brittle so you would have trouble shaping them also the growth cant be molded because the structure of the molecules is very specific and will only form one shape after a certain amount of growth.

      They grow in square forms only.

      bruno alves everyone is different. Just because you understand it doesn't mean I will. If you can understand, good for you, but I'm not speaking on behalf of you, just for others who are in the same situation as I am.

    Salt is the easiest crystal to grow but know table salt makes a different shape from these (which grows similarly to alum salt, which can be found in the spice/salt section of any grocery store sold as pickling salt)
    Epsom salt is harder to make a singular crystal, but they grow rectangular like rutile and table salt grow in cubes. Alum salt grows like a diamond in this vid

    If you were to hang something in the solution, like maybe a marble or small plastic figure, would crystals grow on it?

    • @officiallparts913
      @officiallparts913 8 років тому

      It depends reeally, the way the crystals would grow on it would be through small holest and non-even surfaces.. So if your marble is a little rough, it would be possible.. (please note that the crystal will not continue the shape of the crystal, but take its natural form until it is obstructed by something)

      Anyone try drilling with a tiny diamond point bit? If not that, maybe try wrapping some thin jewelry wire around the fishing line and loop it at where you expect the top of your crystal to be, and let it grow around it.
