Cat was meant to marry Ned's brother (for politics) until he got burned up with Ned's father by the mad king with the 500 people watching. Catelyn's political marriage was therefore moved on to Ned instead. Ned and Cat's marriage started out political but seems to have grown positively since then, more so than Robert and Cersei's relationship seems to.
Brandon didn't get burned. He was tied up in a way that would strangle him the more he struggled. Then the Mad King burned his father in front of him. Obviously he struggled to get free to save his father...and died in the process.
“The hard cruel times," her father said. "We tasted them on the Trident, child, and when Bran fell. You were born in the long summer, sweet one, you've never known anything else, but now the winter is truly coming. Remember the sigil of our House, Arya." "The direwolf," she said, thinking of Nymeria. She hugged her knees against her chest, suddenly afraid. "Let me tell you something about wolves, child. When the snows fall and the white winds blow, *the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.* Summer is the time for squabbles. In winter, we must protect one another, keep each other warm, share our strengths. So if you must hate, Arya, hate those who would truly do us harm. Septa Mordane is a good woman, and Sansa … Sansa is your sister. You may be as different as the sun and the moon, but the same blood flows through both your hearts. You need her, as she needs you … and I need both of you, gods help me." - Eddard, Arya II, AGoT
Summers and winters last multiple years in the world of Game of Thrones. At the beginning of the story, Westeros is going through an abnormally long summer, lasting a little over 10 years.
In case no one mentioned it. At the end when Ned was looking on at Arya training and he started hearing battle cries and metal swords clanking together, he was having ptsd flashbacks from his fighting days. He really did look troubled for Arya's future.
Jaime is not a weakling actually even though initially the show doesn't really make that clear. He's one of the best swordsmen in Westeros. He's far better than Ned and was named to the Kingsguard at 15, because he was that good.
He was appointed because the Mad King wanted to upset Jaime Lannister's father. By making him a member of the Kingsguard Jaime doesn't inherit land or property. So as only a male can inherit that leaves the imp as the only inheritor of the family castle. Rubbing more salt into the wound
You must prepare, this show is full of ruthless scenes and a lot of cynical irony, and every decision the characters make, for better or for worse, will always have consequences for them.
Before Robert Baratheon sat on the iron throne Daenerys’s father, Aerys Targaryen II did. And Robert Baratheon lead a brutal rebellion against him. And at the last minute Jamie had a change of heart about protecting a sadistic tyrant and put a sword through his back. He did Westeros a favor but he broke a sacred vow and for that he was forever named “The Kingslayer“
So, somebody has probably already mentioned that GoT is inspired by the War of the Roses- Among other parallels, Winterfell is Northumbria (that is, the Kingdom of Northumbria); the wall is Hadrian's Wall, and the Wildlings are the Scotts.

Remember the pompous guy from the first scene of the show who didn’t take the white walkers seriously? That is what Jon might have been like if he went north of the wall. Jon is skilled in combat, but was not showing leadership skills, and was not treating other Night’s Watch members as his brothers.
Ned and Cat's marriage was also arranged. She was originally supposed to marry Ned's older brother Brandon but since he and their father died and Ned became the head of House Stark it was decided that House Tully would still go ahead with the proposed alliance and Cat was given to Ned. It's no doubt a political marriage, but they came to love each other later.

The two kingsguard King Robert are talking war stories with (Ser Jaime Lannister and Ser Barristan Selmy), are considered the two best swordsmen alive. I think you really understimate Ser Jaime. And Ser Barristan was a beast and arguably the best swordsman in Westeros during his prime.
