I miss TV like this, seeing Lawrence Welk made me miss my grandmother. She loved it and watched it every week.

Barabara was far from perfect. However in her illustrious career, this joint interviews with both Sadat and Began was the highlight IMO. Even more than being the first Woman to starting as a Lead Anchor/Interviewer at a major tv news outlet in America. Ms Walter’s pioneered the celebrity interview whether it was World Political Leaders such as these 2 or Globally known Celebrities.

Hard to believe that treaty cost Sadat his life, yet it was so important to keep the Middle east from exploding. A very brave act by both men.

Sadat was no angel, but he was such a critical (needed) individual. His assassination robbed the world of his voice and vision. I think @MastercheeseTheaterRedux said it best, "at minimum, Sadat’s death set in motion the disastrous road to the war in Lebanon in 1982, the creation of Hezbollah, and the seeds of al-Qaida."

@@CaptainWedgieAnd almost a half century later Sadat’ murder led the road sadly to also later creating the Gaza/Israel, Iraq and a major Middle East war starting in late 2023.

The butler in the Wendy’s commercial at 8:04 was played by Byron Webster, who played a very similar looking butler in an episode of “Police Squad!”

The ABC Sunday Night Movie "Bite the Bullet" came in third in the timeslot (& 43 of 62 for the ratings week,) losing to CBS's "Celebrity Challenge of the Sexes" (No. #3 for the week) & NBC's "The Big Event: Memories of Elvis" (No. #13 for the week.)

I have to admit, I just did not understand how Lawrence Welk stayed on as long as it did?
To me it was just that weird variety show that my grandfather watched after he had a drink or two.

OK, This might help explain why Lawrence Welk lasted for so long on television- or maybe it won't. Some years ago, media expert, Marshall McLuhan, in his book, 𝑼𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑴𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑬𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑴𝒂𝒏, posed a theory that television was a "cool" medium. Now, here is my extremely simplified explanation of that theory (that I read in yet another book!); the theory is that television is a place, a "cool" medium, where extreme personalities tend to burn out with viewers rather quickly whereas laid-back, more easy-going personalities can thrive on television for much longer periods of time.
BS? Over-thinking the subject? I have to admit, I think the man has a point. I can think of a lot of TV sitcoms where some next door neighbor with a catchphrase will ignite in popularity overnight, burn red hot and then just flare out because we've all gotten so sick of them! But it does seem that it's the low-voltage sorts who just last forever on TV. Now which category does Lawrence fit in?
I will also admit this: we watched 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒘𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘 every week here in our Chicago suburban home- Dad, Mom and we kids. Don't get me wrong, we were listening to The Jackson 5, Rolling Stones, and all the rest on Top 40 radio and sure, there was something about 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒘𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝑾𝒆𝒍𝒌 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒘 that was cornball and yet for some reason we liked it. In fact, to this day, I'll still watch an episode on PBS.

I think a lot of the show's continued longevity had to with Welk's abilities as a promoter and businessman. The higher-ups at ABC thought his show was attracting too old of an audience in 1971 when they cancelled it. That could have been the end (Ed Sullivan was also cancelled in '71), but he knew there was still enough interest that the show would work in syndication. At the same time, the new FCC Prime Access Rule gave an hour back to local stations which had belonged to the networks. There was a need for more syndicated material and Welk was a natural fit for ABC affiliates since they had already carried his show from the network.
