How to Paint Sunsets | Acrylic Painting Tutorial

- Painting Sunsets are really fun. In this tutorial, I give you a, step by step, instruction on how to paint sunsets and my best painting tips to help you paint your own sunsets. Remember to be creative and use what you learn to paint your own original sunset paintings.

Here are the basic steps to painting a sunset.
Step 1: Paint bright colors.
Step 2: Paint cool and gray colors
Step 3: Add drama by layering colors with less blending.
Step 4: Paint Foreground
Here are the painting tips for painting sunsets.
Tip #1 - Photos don't capture sunsets the way we see them. Remember the colors you see and use a photo for composition. Paint the colors from a photo reference more vibrant.
Tip #2 - To make sunsets AMAZING use vibrant colors among grays. The gray colors will make the vibrant colors look bolder.
Tip #3 - For depth create layers in your foreground with dark colors and/or bring some of the colors from your sunset into the foreground. Reflections such as on water bring the sunset colors down in the foreground while mountains or trees create silhouettes that darken as they get closer.

I did my cross country travels in my early twenties, before I had a family and adulthood responsibilities. To this day I have never felt so alive as when I had sold anything that would not fit in my car! I just wish I had thought to paint the things I saw along the way! Thank you for sharing an easy to follow tutorial on sunsets.

I was getting ready to paint a lighthouse and looked for some pointers for the sky when I stumbled on your pointers. Excellent points, and thanks for sharing. Wow! I have been a wanna be painter for probably 6 years or more just trying to learn as I go and tons of you tube channels….. I cld NEVER figure out how to make those brights stand out so I would end up adding white to the paint.. well 3 or 4 days later tons of wasted paint and starting over and over every time.Your video is the first I came across to explain the problem I’ve been having. You would think someone in their 40 s wld just give up. Anyway just want you to know how your videos just solved a 6 year battle because I’ve been trying to do opposite of what your showing. Greatly appreciated!🥰

I agree. I have not come across a video that tells you when to add certain colors and why as well as how to add details without taking away from the focus.

I live in Noerthwest Louisiana near Lake Bistineau. I have taken many photos of sunsets. Ive only been painting for about a year. Self-taught by watching You Tube videos. Skies, of any kind, are the hardest for me to accomplish. Thank you for the tips.

My circumstances at present don't facilitate my need to paint, so I have to content myself with watching others. Thank you so, so much for making the videos. The world would be a darker, duller place without you creating these fantastic videos, so thank you.
In answer to your queztion, we get fabulous sunsets and sunrises across the road from my home. There is a great expanse of open sky and the colours are truly incredible. I've tried taking photos to paint them after they are gone, but like you said, it's not a good way to do it as the camera doesn't pick up the full beauty of it. One day perhaps cameras will improve to a standard that they will be able to capture the full glory of the beautiful heavens. I live in South Wales, UK. We have fabulous countryside here. Great spaces to sit and paint and contemplate. Thank you once again for all you do.

Beautiful! Love what you are doing! I looked at your website and I only saw a couple of oil tutorials. Do you have more or will you be doing more? I started with acrylic but now I prefer oils
Hi! Thanks for watching. I started out painting with oils and love them. While traveling it is simpler for me to do acrylics. However, I use heavy body acrylics so many of the same techniques I use can be used with oils as well. So I hope you stick around and enjoy my acrylic tutorials but use your oils. Maybe I will do an event with oils or return to oils in the future.

Thank you so much! I love your explanation on how to create vibrant sunsets! Where I live in Alberta, Canada we get “chinooks” which bring warmer weather in the winter for a number of days throughout our winters. This causes our sunrises to be beautiful!! I am going to try your advice in painting a beautiful sunrise.

Createful Art I grew up on Orcas, in the San Juans... So many great ones there. Hike Mt Baker to the lake that mirrors the mountain in it . If you go to the islands make ferry reservations. Can be costly to take on a big RV, but if you have a car, you can see a lot in one long day. Beautiful views from the drive along the water between Anacortes and Bellingham. So much to mention! Enjoy!

I may be a bit late but, I was wondering if this was done on a canvas that was wet of dry. I ask so I can make blending the clouds that bit easier, maybe adding grey to clouds a bit. The artwork is really stunning!

I agree, there was one point where it jumped over a bunch of steps from the orange, yellow, red purples and greys. I'm a beginner but pretty competent and was totally lost :/
Yeah, I'm sorry but mee too, I could not understand what was going on. Just too fast, too many cuts, and not enough explanation. But I do understand that the members are where you make your money; I totes get it; it's kind of a tease to get us to take your classes. I wish I could afford right now, but I hope your students on the other side are having fun!

I think what your doing is so awesome blessings to you and your family on your travels .. I live in Phoenix Arizona and the place I go to see the sun set is called hole in the rock please Google it it's rite next to the phoenix Zoo. That would be a great place for you to do a sunset .. and next not to far from there is South mountain it's sort of lovers lane . Its way up on the mountain and you can see the whole city of Phoenix and a beautiful sun set I believe you can camp out there too.. There are so many places also canyon Lake in Mesa Arizona please Google it you guys can camp out there and superstitious mountain is right next to it they have other campgrounds there to...
