I figured The Penguin would be good since Colin Farell did an amazing job as Penguin in The Batman. I'm still invested in this universe way more than what James Gunn will do.
What I liked about the show was that when you're watching The Batman, you're like, "Yeah, go get them Batman, fuck Penguin." And when you're watching The Penguin you're like, "Yeah, go get them Penguin, fuck the family." It's like Breaking Bad, you're rooting for the bad guy because you see it from their perspective. When I watched The Batman I loved how he smashed into Penguin's car and made it crash like that. But after seeing what it did to his foot, I felt bad for Oz.
James Madio as Grappa looks so comic accurate to Don Grappa , Falcone's right hand man Cristin Milani was perfectly casted as Sophia Falcone even had her comic nickname "Hang Man " mentioned The casting is great And Mark Strong as Carmine Falcone is spot on too
Was it that crash that fucked up his foot? It seemed more like a congenital defect. I rewatched the movie after the show and it seems like he had the limp in the movie, just less pronounced.
@darkstarmedia sounds like a double standard. The whole point of Breaking Bad is you are not supposed to root for Walter and he isnt the good guy. Seems pretty dumb to root for Batman to beat up people not as bad as Penguin and root for Penguin to ruin people's lives

Also, I don't agree that you weren't supposed to root for Walter White. He was written in a sympathetic way exactly so you would root for him, same as Penguin.
That's amazing. I do the same thing, but I also look at some of the current bad written movies just to recognize what's wrong with them, and avoid doing that at all costs.

First episode actually got me super hyped for the rest of the season! The character work, the writing, the acting were all on point… I share your sentiments, somewhat, about it being a “Batman show” without Batman in it and how it might feel like they’re milking the IP a little bit… but then I’m reminded of great comic runs like Brubaker’s Gotham Central and how the “lesser” characters really do serve as integral elements, without which the Character of Gotham City would be incomplete. Penguin might be reminiscent of a Sopranos but I think the dirty, dark, sleazy, with an undertone-of-insanity Gothamness of it might be what makes it a Batman show in the end… at least imo! Thanks again!
I don't mind that Penguin series is a grounded crime drama. I think this is a good entry for those who are not familiar with the comics or even with the films. Also, the Penguin is not a well-known villian compared to The Joker, Harvey Dent, The Scarecrow, and The Riddler. I like how this series focuses on The Penguin and gives the audience a peek into his world, etc. I am looking forward to the next episode and if successful, it would be cool to see other series focus on villians within Gotham.
I see what you say about your first flaw, but to me it was a different thing in that same scene. Oz is boxed in, he looks trapped, then they reveal a clever plan. Everything was set up properly, shot and acted wonderfully. Then in the next scene they explained the clever thing like I'm an idiot. This isn't a kids show, have some faith in your audience.
That's good to hear but it doesn't sound like my type of show. Still, at least I know that if I'm bored and decide to give it a watch, it won't be insultingly bad.

One show paying homage to Mare of Easttown and European detective dramas, embracing a more open approach to nudity, violence, and other mature themes. Then there's Penguin, a truly unique crime drama that's naturally drawing comparisons to The Sopranos. I loved the grounded, yet visually captivating take on Gotham City. It feels like a blend of Gothic European (Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow) with New York City, while still carving out its own identity, much like The Batman did. Some parts of Gotham even lean more towards New Jersey and Brooklyn, which works perfectly. Colin Farrell is fantastic as the Penguin, and I thought the show's beginning was handled really well. Having a fun week so far with these shows, hopefully we hear news next week about when Deadpool & Wolverines releases to streaming.
I found out they only filmed around New York City, including places like Brooklyn and the Bronx, so that makes sense. Personally, I think Edinburgh would be the perfect place to shoot for Gotham City, especially for Old Gotham. The Gothic Revival architecture throughout Edinburgh would be a great inspiration for a dark, imposing skyline, with some Art Deco elements thrown in to give it that classic Gotham feel.

That said, I’m a bit biased as a huge fan of witches and the folklore around them, along with the witch films that really took off in the '80s. The Witches of Eastwick (1987), Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) are some standouts. And that’s not even mentioning the '90s and 2000s, which I imagine the show will pull from too-like The Craft (1996) and Sabrina the Teenage Witch (1996-2003). If none of that sounds appealing, then Agatha All Along probably won’t be for you. The show’s also pretty open about its LGBTQ themes, which might not be to everyone’s taste. But honestly, the connection between queer culture and witchcraft has been around for decades, so people calling the show "woke" feels a bit like those who complained about X-Men '97 being political and pushing agendas. It’s part of the legacy. Summed up. I'd just recommend checking it out for yourself if that's possible.

It’s super hard to say many good things about a ton of things that have come out in the last 5 years or more. Well written and well-made, usually overcomes. Tim Burton's Batman Returns had a grotesque Penguin played by Danny Devito. Burgress Meridith was a campy 1960's Penguin with twirling umbrella. Robin Lord Taylor was the most real until now, in the show Gotbam.

Ppl complaining about this particular take on the characters, we need to be open minded and understand that these characters should be available to interpretation by different creators. The Reeves verse is inspired from very grounded real world elements while stil managing to maintain the essence of the characters. And I'm completely fine with that. Plus, year 1 Batman had such kind of grounded villains.
Oz is released when Alberto's body is found in the yrunk, and OZ planned it to look like the Marone gang did it Down to returning the right to Marone earlier in prison. Alberto:s body is cut up and marked like it was a message from the other gang. Sophia was tricked into thinking Oz did not do it.
Why is it a problem that we expand on the world of certain super heroes like Batman without having them as the main characters? I actually liked the Penguin series a lot more than the more super hero series produced by both DC and Marvel. It is simply great in itself, but you still can get the impression that there are further stories lurking in the background.

Supposedly Sofia just released the Penquin once she blamed Salvatore for killing her brother but if she really understands how dangerous he is she'd never do that even if he had nothing to do with killing Alberto.
Cobb sounds like a real name, compared to Cobblepot. Oz Cobb is very dangerous villian. He reminds me of Al Capone, rather than any comic book character. Gotham has never felt so real. This is a criminal with the unwanted nickname Penguin, like Whitey or Bugsy. Gangsters that would beat a person dead if someone called them by those names.
I'm fine with calling them the Fal-Cones in this continuity instead of the Fal-Conies (even though the latter is how it's supposed to be pronounced) because they literally changed his name to Oz Cobb. If I can get behind "Oz Cobb," I should also, in the context of this universe, be able to get behind "Fal-Cone."
I'm just glad penguin is a genuinely clever character instead of just being another evil goober the writers don't have to tell you hes a cunning individual you get that from his actions
This makes me more convinced that WB should just Forget about James Gunns Dc Universe and Focus more on the Batman's Elsworld Universe .. I mean who's to say you can't introduce other superheroes through this world... like the DCAU... Start with Batman and introduce other heroes with their backgrounds as you go.. plus, I think Reeves would know how to introduce these heroe's while giving them the respect they need💯💯

Apparently there was a reason why they don’t mention Batman and why he’s referred to as os cob and its the same reason why Batman didn’t appear in the teen titans cartoon, why robin couldn’t be used in the 2004 Batman series until teen titans ended along with two face and ra’s al ghul as well and why Batman related characters couldn’t be used for justice league unlimited, why the joker couldn’t be called that in the show Gotham and even why they also gender swapped the penguin in the new Batman animated series and it’s because of a stupid bat embargo that Warner brothers has put in place and honestly who ever came up with that idea needs to be fired.

Considering this series takes place in that world, rather than one of the worlds you have in your head where they say it differently. I know this is a tv show, but the penguin is already a much better version of the Brian azzarello joker comic.

Apparently there was a reason why they don’t mention Batman and why he’s referred to as os cob and its the same reason why Batman didn’t appear in the teen titans cartoon, why robin couldn’t be used in the 2004 Batman series until teen titans ended along with two face and ra’s al ghul as well and why Batman related characters couldn’t be used for justice league unlimited, why the joker couldn’t be called that in the show Gotham and even why they also gender swapped the penguin in the new Batman animated series and it’s because of a stupid bat embargo that Warner brothers has put in place and honestly who ever came up with that idea needs to be fired.
This is interesting as I originally thought it sounded pretty stupid.
I would rather rewatch Sabrina’s Secret Life.

Uhm, no. You aren't supposed to pronounce it that way. It wasn't pronounced that way in The Batman was it? Considering this series takes place in that world, rather than one of the worlds you have in your head where they say it differently. Don't forget, even though they may use the same source material, they are still separate and distinct projects.
I don't recall ANY piece of media pronounce the name that way. Is that what she thought it sounded like?
