FINALLY! Brave Fencer Musashi was in that review backlog for as long as Onimusha was. Glad to see your review on this hidden gem. Now all thats left is for you to tackle Chrono Trigger on the"for another day" list.
It's Chrono Cross Johnny hasn't played yet. He's made it pretty clearly through the PlayStation videos that he has played Chrono Trigger, especially his PS2 video.
4:33 “Slight correction: FFVIII was out early 1999 in Japan. Late 1999 for the West.” Not only that but FFVIII came out on the EXACT SAME DAY that the Sega Dreamcast was launched in the US with Sonic Adventure!
if caddy's playstation magazine video is to be believed then it WAS supposed to be released in pal reigions but just never did... which reminds me of how much Square soft hates the Europe reigion when it comes to localization
This was a great video to a great Squaresoft classic! It hasn't aged perfectly in some aspects but it's just so damn charming and fun As a long time fan of both Johnny and this game, to anyone that enjoyed this I recommend also checking out Gaming Broduction's retrospective over Brave Fencer Musashi that came out earlier this year. It's over an hour long and another real in-depth look at the game, the laidback chill delivery of both the channels with the occasional humor are very similar so I think most that liked this video will enjoy that one as well!
Ah Mona Marshall. Everyone’s favorite Momentai saying bunny data creature and the original voice of Penny Gadget (yes even before Cree. She was Penny in the original pilot episode where Gadget was much more obviously Don Adams’ character from Get Smart.)
He talked about Mona Marshall, yet didn't mention the FLCL poster he's had on his wall for a while! It's a great OVA, which I recently finished it, and the performances from Mona Marshall and Kari Wahlgren were peak anime dubs!
With each and every new Johnny Vs. video that isn’t Final Fantasy VIII, Squall Leonhart proceeds to shed another tear. In all seriousness, another great video and super happy to see you again!
As someone who absolutely loves your FF videos being a huge fan myself, this was a seriously pleasant surprise after being teased 10 whole years ago in the PS1 retrospective. If you’re passionate about the game, it’s always a great Johnny video in my book!
It makes me so happy that you're talking about this underrated gem from my childhood. Thank you. More people need to talk about this charming little food pun filled adventure.
26:30 Musashi enthusiast here. The only time you would want to use the deluxe hotel room would be during Chapter 3, if you are poisoned, and somehow are unable to buy/assimilate an antidote. Otherwise yeah, everything else the game throws at you makes the hotel pretty pointless.
Johnny thank you so much for reviewing my favorite game of all time, Brave Fencer Musashi changed my life! I also was very fortunate to become friends with Sekito Tsuyoshi legendary composer of this game! When I met him in Osaka this past March.
The fabled Musashi review is here and it was fulfilling seeing Johnny talk about a game that is near and dear to his heart. I hope this gets a re-release so I can give this game a proper shot!
20:19 Just watched the Direct! You can now get Dawn of Sorrows if you miss that one, or the OTHER DS entries in the series since they just released the Dominus Collection for them on Switch! Just letting you know if your interested (it's 24.99)
It was your tease on the Playstation 1 video that inspired me to look for this game, ended up getting a good deal for it online. Damn fine little game. I still can't believe you actually reviewed this nearly a decade later.
The one Chris pronounce by accident during the Donkey Kong Country Charity? Yep. Still great. But nothing beats with thinking SUCK was an school university.
was fun to finally hear you talk about Brave Fencer Musashi! Here's hoping that it hits western stores at some point. looking forward to the ff9 and ffx-2 videos, whenever they happen! ...kinda looking forward to the eventual Musashi Samurai Legend video... but real talk, this video is a good example of why I love your content; even when a game has your nostalgia by the balls, if it has issues, those issues will get brought up without excessive makeup. It's always worth the wait, no matter what, or how long.
The Super Gaming Bros. Let's Play of this game is what introduced me to the SGB, and Johnny's channel. And given how awesome it's been to watch your content, especially if I'm having a rough day, I'm thankful for that. Now if only I could find a copy lying around in the wild.
God I remember the tease for this since the Johnny vs PS1 . Was great meeting you at too many games John and this as the first video back man just *chefs kiss*

My favorite game of all time. The song that plays while you search the forest with the dog really strings at my heart. Johnny the goat. Both the character voiced by Steve Blum and you. Thanks for finally doing this review, teased years ago!!
One of my favourite games of all time. I cant believe you made a proper video on it. It's so fun and kino. Currently almost perfected it on Retro Achivments Hardcore mode. Thank you for this video!
06:44 You say that Johnny, but honestly. That's exactly why I got excited to see this in my subscription feed. As much fun as it is see you review bad games, i mean I've watched the Sonic 06 videos quite a few times. It's just nice to see you review games you love. To hear you talk to passionately about them is always a great time.
I frankly missed it when John would just review a random game instead of constantly doing marathons after marathons after marathons after marathons after marathons after marathons after marathons after marathons.
Ha glad to see the great Brave Fencer Musashi getting attention! Very nostalgic game of mine… That I never could finish, very sadly thanks to either time being good at it/not knowing what to do or the game itself literally not working (especially for the emulator I used)! Still I love how charming this game is with its world, characters you can love- heck a world you’ll love and want to explore (kinda wish this series got an animated adaptation or even a manga because I like to see more of it), and just fun/interesting mechanics. That’s not getting into the music, the sound effects, heck even I like the charm of classic RPG UI Squaresoft games had. It’s just a great game overall!
Rarely do you play anything I've played myself (or would want to) but BFM is one of my childhood gems nobody cares about. Lemme download this jawn for later. You continue to be wild consistent. Good shit.
I've waited 13 years for this review. Way back when you guys played it for SGB; It remains as one of my all time favorite SGB Lets Plays. The OST is amazing and the story is a ton of fun. Thanks for introducing me to this amazing game!
This has been a game I've been wanting to play for awhile now! I still remember finding out about this game from a demo disc that I bought at my schools book fair
I actually was pretty excited to see an upload from Johnny that covered this one. I've been curious about his input on it ever since he referenced it way back during his Bastion review from years ago. I would also like to see Brave Fencer Musashi get a proper remake sometime. Y'know, address the flaws that were likely the result of limitations of the hardware at the time, and introduce so many more to the game. I'm intrigued by the world presented within the game itself, and I do have a pretty avid appreciation for fantasy worlds that blend different genres of fiction to create something more unique. That could just be a byproduct of the fact that I've recently decided to pick back up Tales of the Abyss and I'm utterly enamored with pulp fantasy/dieselpunk setting it seems to sport, so the steampunk, nonchalantly comical fantasy world this game seems to take place in would likely very much appeal to me.
What a return, one of my favorite PS1 games! And I have to say...Your story sounds a lot like mine. I first encountered Brave Fencer Musashi at a Garage sale in...2000. Or rather, my brothers did. It toook tiny me years to beat i, but beat it I did, becoming the third game i ever did so after both Zeldas on n64. I fucking love this game, Johnny, and I'm glad to see someone else love it too.
It’s FINALLY time. After the many times John has mentioned this game over the years I finally get to see what all the fuss is about and his opinions on it!! :D
Thank you Johnny. This is what i need to get me through the rest of my double shift. Also i remember you teasing this in your PS1 video. Oh, and the LP was fun
This game was my first exposure to an RPG at the age of 5 when I played it on a PlayStation Underground demo disc! Quite a different experience for someone who was used to playing Crash, Spyro, and Mario 64
For me, it wasn't the FF8 demo disc. I learned about Brave Fencer Musashi through the PlayStation Underground Volume 2 Issue 4 demo to be exact. Thank you for all your hard work, I remember watching your sgb run of this games years ago. Glad to see you having some fun playing an old gem. Hope you have fun with the next review.
I’m stoked for this video. I played the fuckkk out of the demo for this game. And I played the sequel twice. But I never actually got to play this full game!
this is a childhood CLASSIC for me in newfoundland. I use to walk to this really far cornerstore and rent this game for the weekend sooooo many times. Sony definitely set FFVIII's release date on the same day as the Dreamcast for a good reason.
