  • The Arkansas & Missouri Railroad is home to quite a few operating Alcos, including a C424, a couple of T6s, and almost a dozen C420s, three of which are featured in this video. There are two operations seen working Springdale in this video. The first is the Springdale Local with AM 56 and 57 for power. The second is the Rogers Local with AM 42 for power. These are the locomotives commonly assigned to the two jobs. On this particular day, the Springdale Local ran in the late morning and worked through most of the afternoon. The Rogers Local ran fairly early in the morning and returned in the in the afternoon. To my knowledge, these are the common times the jobs run on weekdays. Video from July 16, 2021. (Slight correction, A&M is a Class 3 not a Class 2, apologies)

Just recently rode the a&m from van Buren to Winslow and back. It was a nice experience. We were on the golden age which was on the back heading to Winslow and on the front heading back to can Buren. The two engines were Alco C420s like shown in the vid #68 and #62. The conductor even let me stand by the door to watch the engine couple to the cars

Still can't figure out what horns are equipped on the Alco C420 locomotives! Great video!

There is so much more you didn't get to capture. The A&M also have SD70ACEs. But mainly C420s. Also a T6, RS-1 and a RS-32. I get to see them everyday coming and going from and around my place of work.

Is A&M class 2 now? I'm from the area, so I'm curious. I think their website says class 3.
These engines are iconic in Western AR. We see them in the port area of Fort Smith or across the river in Van Buren ready to head north. There have also been a few times that these engines stop right next to the outdoor patio of the main concert hall on Dickson Street (George's Majestic Lounge). So close you can reach over the rail of the patio and nearly touch them. And grabbing a beer in downtown Rogers or Springdale wouldn't be the same witthout these engines around.
Hell, I'm quite proud of our great region, and the A&M is an icon of this region.

You are correct I made a mistake, they are a class 3. I too love this railroad and enjoy their locomotives.

56 and 57 seem to have the wider radiators of the higher powered centuries, I notice they looked like this when with BC rail but not with LV. Hsve they been re-powered at some point?

These are being kept for the foreseeable future on local and yard jobs right?

Curious if its economicaly feasable to run a Alco fleet these days when parts are harder to get than newer emd pr ge locomotives?

Although the 251 is no longer made new, Fairbanks-Morse Engine and a number of other small providers still make parts for the engines (given there’s still a few in marine and civil service)
I believe A&M also did acquire some spare units from Watco after they bought out the Dakota Southern as well.
Also bear in mind DL&W also has a larger fleet of Alcos as well.

Hi! Would it be ok if I used part of this footage in my upcoming UA-cam video on the alco centuries?
