If you compare AFL with the NRL, you can see culturally that the AFL, its coaches, players and media are very protective of the umpires. This is a good thing I guess, but it means that if there are genuine concerns about umpiring quality, it needs to be treated seriously because of the cultural filter it needs to get through in order to be discussed in the first place. There have been multiple games this year decided by umpire mistakes. North lost to Collingwood because of a howler of an umpiring error, and that poor club has barely won a game for 3 years. There are too many rules brought in to protect umpires’ feelings. The ruling for concussion is a massive overreach which is to buffer against future litigation, not to protect players.

They keep saying 'us' the people at home don't understand it. This year has been THE worst year for umpiring EVER. even after finding out this year there is a fifth umpire not on the ground, I have never believed more that the umpires are on the books.
I think the umpiring is still good. But note the following. There used to be 6 matches per weekend and one umpire per match. The best six umpires would umpire... then for many years it was 2 per game so the best 12 umpires. Now there are 9 matches per round and 4 umpires per match. We have the best 36 umpires each week. So its not difficult to compare the best 6 umpires compared with the best 36 umpires. There will be a difference in experience for sure. But visibility is now better.
The Essendon player ran it straight through the goals, he turned around twice and obviously had no pressure and still chose to run it through. If scores were level with only a minute or 2 left, he would have ran across the face of goal and kicked it down the line to 50m line. His full intention was to grab that ball and straight over the line. In my opinion it was deliberate and not under pressure.

There will always be mistakes and no man's land umpire decisions that leave spectators and commentators perplexed or embarrassed. That's no excuse for increasing their frequency and severity.
Whats he talking about. The umpiring is the worst i have ever seen, they all seem to have different ideas of the rules, And 4 umpires are 2 to many AFL you are ruining the game, and some of the rules they have brought in are a joke
Interpretation has become the keyword. Why do interpretations vary so much? Because the rules have been rewritten so loosely that there is no choice but to use interpretation & guesswork. Before 2000 the rules had not changed a huge amount. We brought in interchange, diamond, then square, then 50 metre lines. The basic holding rules, dropping & throwing the ball did not change. a push in the back was a push in the back. We had not prior opportunity. We had no nomination of rucks. The rules were so clearly written that a 5yo could understand them. Now you need a bloody Rhode's Scholarship to interpret them & you will come up with an interpretation that another person would not. Change all the rules back. Make a push in the back a pushin the back; This is the original rule; If a player uses his hands in a pushing motion to the back of an opponent he will be penalised & a free kick awarded to the player who is pushed. Simple really.
I think this is actually a true statement, AFL umpiring is as good as its ever been, which is awful. Don't buy the AFL propoganda that this is a hard game to umpire - it isn't. The umpires are not competent and they want to gloss over that issue.
I love the game but I actually think we focused too much on the umpiring decisions. If you look at most games of football and not decided by the umpires yes there are some inconsistencies but I think that has come from the fact that the rules keep changing which comes from the media wanting a perfect looking game. I think we have to stop trying to create this perfect aesthetic look to the game and we have to just let the games player even low scoring games can be exciting. I don't think we have to have this high scoring free-flowing game every single game that we watch it would get boring if every game was the same and I just feel that there's this push to make every single AFL game 20 goals to each team coming down to the last minute. There is almost this mantra to create this and I think it's ridiculous. If we keep bashing umpires then Kids won't want to be umpires and then the standard will go down which I think has happened anyway. Maybe we aren't getting the quality through that we used to get because people don't want to be umpires any more. We can bash the umpires we all they like but at the end of the day they have to go out there and do a job. Yes they make mistakes but they don't make as many mistakes as players make, I'm not saying the AFL is right I just think there's too much focus on it

You really think the AFL is organised enough to pre-determine the outcome of a game? Essendon losing doesn’t equal a conspiracy - crap umpiring yes, but conspiracy no.
@@cmadelaide56 After Gillons move to Tabcorp, I'd bet my house on it!!!
@@cmadelaide56You need to pull your head out of your arsenal! It’s the most corrupt sport on the planet and has been getting worse for decades.
Let’s not forget that whilst most people in Melbourne were subjected to house arrest the AFL elites were living interstate in five star luxury and as I pointed out in a previous comment The AFL rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars and pays No Tax - Why?
Of that list of games that were affected by poor umpiring decisions, 9 of the 12 cost me in my tipping comp....
Not happy.
Thanks for reuioning our game Laura Kane and Andrew Dillion the game is absolutely shot and the rest involved. Bring on the summer of cricket. LEAVE OUR BLOODY GAME ALONE YOU DO GOODERS.
I think afl need the dr video same to the cricket for Dr video.
There will always be mistakes and no man's land umpire decisions that leave spectators and commentators perplexed or embarrassed. That's no excuse for increasing their frequency and severity.
He feels it that good he needs a bodyguard.
Whats he talking about. The umpiring is the worst i have ever seen, they all seem to have different ideas of the rules, And 4 umpires are 2 to many AFL you are ruining the game, and some of the rules they have brought in are a joke
Andrew Dillon is out of his depth. Insecure, weak leadership….. own the problem and fix it.
Interpretation has become the keyword. Why do interpretations vary so much? Because the rules have been rewritten so loosely that there is no choice but to use interpretation & guesswork. Before 2000 the rules had not changed a huge amount. We brought in interchange, diamond, then square, then 50 metre lines. The basic holding rules, dropping & throwing the ball did not change. a push in the back was a push in the back. We had not prior opportunity. We had no nomination of rucks. The rules were so clearly written that a 5yo could understand them. Now you need a bloody Rhode's Scholarship to interpret them & you will come up with an interpretation that another person would not. Change all the rules back. Make a push in the back a pushin the back;
This is the original rule;
If a player uses his hands in a pushing motion to the back of an opponent he will be penalised & a free kick awarded to the player who is pushed.
Simple really.
I think this is actually a true statement, AFL umpiring is as good as its ever been, which is awful. Don't buy the AFL propoganda that this is a hard game to umpire - it isn't. The umpires are not competent and they want to gloss over that issue.
Like when a coach is on the chopping block for players underperforming.. the CEO should be for the game and umpiring.
Fans are not happy.
Lets all not talk about crows sydney game last year
I love the game but I actually think we focused too much on the umpiring decisions. Yes they make mistakes but they don't make as many mistakes as players make, I'm not saying the AFL is right I just think there's too much focus on it
The umpires should not be wearing an ear piece.
Surely Andrew “the dill” Dillon and the AFL would have learned. Laura Kane embarrassing tried to feed the supporters her ridiculous version of events. Now this “Dill” has followed suit, doubled down and flat out insults all supporters intelligence. He can now go into hiding with Kane. If this is the best the AFL can conjure they are doomed.
Stop changing the rules and make umpiring a full time professional career
Fans should boycott
No mate, but you stay away - that’s if you even attend in the first place.
@@JO-pz6uf 1. I have a premiership on the G, have played for the big V, 4 club bnfs and have been at more games than you could ever dream of, but actually playing.
2. The current state of the game is appalling, and the umpiring is ruining it just as much as the administrators.
3. The worst part is, they’re trying to be to manipulate the game, the results, the media to suit their pockets rather than the good of the sport.
4. I have forgotten more about footy than you’ll ever know.
@@JO-pz6ufWhat are you, paid by the AFL? Don't defending them so hard.
@@mrmikeriley I keep things in perspective and don’t get brainwashed by “expert” football commentators. If you want a discussion about freaking surge pricing at AFL admission prices, or the debacle of the fixture then we can discuss that - but I ain’t boycotting the game.
@@Littleyeti7To be honest. Looking at some of the free kicks, or non-free kicks decisions that were made on Saturday night. I actually think the umpires got some of the decisions correct, and deserve price for it. Which sucks, because I needed Essendon to win Saturday night, but they didn't.
So Essendon sooks Brad Scott, Matthew Lloyd and Robbo aren't happy 🙄
No one now knows the rules anymore
Too many rules too many interpretations, the afl is to blame not umpiring
The umpiring has never been as professional as it has been. In saying that we hear the feedback and will be working thru the off season to improve understanding and communication around new interpretations
Thats all you had to say andrew. How can a bloke who works a minimum wage job come up with a better response than the bloke who runs the afl
There are too many rules where the umpire has to judge a players intent. We are expecting umpires to be bloody mind-readers FFS.
Does he watch footy at all😢
Although it’s minimal, there’s some chance the AFL might listen if it wasn’t Robbo the drunkard screaming. Cheers Robbo have a pot or two 🍻
Too much off season interference in the rules by guess Who? "AFL headquarters ". These are the consequences of these types of actions. Regardless of the current issues.
4 umpires is the problem, they simply don't have the depth.
Can't we go back to basics please
When the umpires walk away from the game, because of the crap thy have to put up with. Then the AFL might get there head out of their arises.
150 year old game and still can’t get it right
seriously think a boycott of the sport is worth considering in order to fix the umpiring. Fix the colossal mess of AFL umpiring or fans do not show up to games the next 4 weeks……..there are many other sports out there, that are run by actual professionals……happy to switch if this #@#$show is not fixed soon.
Geez I wish they’d move these 2 jokers on…
The gender diversity pick for AFL General Manager of Football has not worked. Mixed messages on umpiring amongst other facets of the job show Laura Kane out of her depth. Get rid of her and appoint someone who understands the game more fundamentally. 😉🇦🇺👊
And bring player weights back. If stunning and brave AFLW players don’t want their weights listed, maybe they should go do something else … 😂
With women there is never accountability….
How is Andrew Dillon a woman? The number of fans who act like everything was perfect before Kane was hired is staggering. You all have very short memories.
@@dansharp2860 Dillon is ultimately responsible. But Kane is completely incompetent.
Andrew Dillon is on drugs.
Can you please just leave the AFL as it is and don’t stuff it up even more seriously guys. I am getting sick and tired of this andrew dillon get out and bring Gillon McLachlan back in 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
WHOS PAYING UMPIRES SORT IT OUT CORUPT AFL .....PEOPLE HAVING ALL UP MULTIS ON SPORTSBETT WITH PLAYERS TO KICK ONE OR 2 GOALS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN PLAYERS ON BENCH THAT YOU ARE ON ....TO KICK GOALS AND THEY ON BENCH FOR HALF LAST QUARTER ......NOT HARD TO WORK OUT MATCH FIXING DOES EXIST IN AFL ......!!!!!
The AFL wonders why punch ups happen after Saturday night game worst umpires in history
Right in front of meeee
The games become a FAD. F---- andrew dillon if thats the best he has to offer.
Kane needs to be gone absolute rubbish
Once again this round bad umpiring
Give it a rest now. Umpires make hundreds of decisions a game and of course they get some wrong. Sometimes it’s costly, sometimes it isn’t. It’s happened in the past and it’s going to happen next week as well. They’re human. Coaches make mistakes by not tagging players they should tag, going conservative in the last quarter instead going for the win etc. Players make mistakes, missing goals , dropping marks etc etc. Commentators make mistakes every call they make - everyone is human - it’s the human element that makes it exciting. Media are just whipping up a frenzy because it’s good for ratings and sales.
Players don't deliberately drop marks or miss goals, completely wrong analogy.
@@magpie7154 and if you’re saying that umpires deliberately make wrong decisions to affect the game, then you probably think the earth is flat.
Made a massive mistake not getting Gale in the top job !
Dillion is hopeless
Yes u r right. Dillon is way out of his depth here.

Umpire bashing has been part of the game forever
They get most things right even though they are all one eyed rotten bludgers needing a bike to keep up
Constant review of games by umpires just as players do is critical
Umpires are a vital part of the game and the AFL job is to support and encourage them not join the umpire haters
Delusional Dillon!
This boy blunder is absolutely taking the mic out of Joe Public Aussie rules supporters.........large !! Back to 2 umps please Mister AFL who stay in their same half for the entire game and get their story straight before they run out ! It's much preferable to 4 blokes all looking at each other and second guessing what today's "interpretation" of THE RULES in AFL scripture is gonna be !! For crying out loud sort it out sharpish or find someone who can because you are not part of a solution with your hyperbole mate.
When it comes to who's going to make the final, Essendon has been ripped off in two games the Gold coast suns game And Geelong game,if Essendon Miss the finals by two games, that's because the umpire robbed Essendon
