No not really. Maybe underrated for 2 years but they arent so good. Europa League title was their first ever title in history. Not even 1 spanish cup. So underrated is probably too much

The beauty of football is unreal. What we call “small clubs” today were once big some time ago. Eventually some clubs that we know today that are not that strong internationally will be big and international competitions favorite’s sometime in the future
Parma is also surprising for two reasons: - Outside Juventus, Inter and AC Milan, they are the 4th team in Italy concerning International Trophies - All of their European trophies came within 9 years since their first season ever in Serie A (1990/1991)
Population of Nottingham is around 330,000 but the Urban Area population that included most of the suburbs and places 99% would consider as Nottingham is around 800,000

Guingamp, 7 111 inhabitants, won a European cup, the Intertoto Cup, in 1996, won several Coupes de France and played several times Europa Ligue and qualified for the round of 16
Something I did not know until yesterday, but ESOF La Roche-sur-Yon's women's team finished 2nd back to back in the French D1 Féminine around the turn of the millennium, so almost became the first French club to participate in what is now the Women's UCL. Bearing in mind that their men's team is about to be relegated from the 6th tier, and La Roche-sur-Yon has a population of 53,000. I literally lived 18 miles away for an entire decade, and did not know this...
Mourinho’s Porto UCL win in 2024 remains the only time that small club outside of the top 5 league to win the UCL. 20 years on the winners are either teams from the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga and Serie A
probably the record..Sochaux (3 820 inhabitants) participated 9 times to the Europa League and qualified for the semi finals in 1980-1981 French football has something with small cities that doesnt mean the teams dont have great results
We, in bastia with the scb, went on an european cup final against psv in 1977 while only beeing a 40k people city and knocking out sporting Portugal, torino and newcastle
Nottingham is huge. I mean I live here the population is more than double 300k people. It’s closer to 1 million if you include the influx of new students every October since it’s a student city.

I know no one probably cares about American sports here… But Green Bay, Wisconsin (Population 107,015) is the smallest city in all top-flight American sports leagues. Despite that tho, they have the most championships (13) of any NFL team… 4 Super Bowls and 9 Championships before the Super Bowl area. And the reason it even has 107,000 is because of the team. Without the Packers, Green Bay would probably just be another small town in Wisconsin.
Galatasaray, is a Turkish club that has the most league titles in Turkey. They have won the UEFA Cup in 2000. And they represent a small town in Istanbul. I couldn't find any data about towns' population but Beyoğlu, the district that the town is in has around 200K population.

To be fair back then domestic championships and european were more balanced and inclusive. Back then clubs from smaller nations had a chance to make it to the top of the world ladder if they were good enough. Nowdays Tottenham who hasn't won anything from who knows when can regulary play champions league football and clubs from central and eastern europe who are genuine champions can't even qualify.
And then villarreal got to UCL semifinals eliminating bayern and playing a great return match against liverpool with serious chances of getting to the finals. Just incredible stuff, also another masterclass from Unai Emery
To be for some reason big cities don't do particularly well at football relatively. For example look at how many teams from Capital Cities that have won the European Cup/Champions League.
