Serie feels like such a complex character whose words either hide or deflect her true feelings. She kept repeating that Flamme was just a girl she trained on a whim, but she was taken aback when she learned of her death, remembers her favourite spell more than a thousand years later, took the time to reminisce about her with Frieren, and ultimately followed through with Flamme's request to take over and teach humanity magic.
She outwardly says how disappointed she is with humans and how she shouldn't take on human apprentices, and at first it seems very harsh, and that she's disappointed in humans for their lack of skill; but she continues to train humans and instantly offered to take Fern as a student when she showed her potential. I think what she's actually disappointed in is not that humans are inferior, but that their limited lifespans mean that even when they achieve great skill, they don't have long to use it; and the effort that she puts in to training humans and getting to know them seems to evaporate in an instant.
I think this ep shows humans are becoming more and more skilled in a shorter and shorter length of time. Lernen after 50 years detected Frieren's mana suppression, but Fern after not even two decades can detect Serie's, who's probably much better. I think Serie's reaction to Fern shows that she too is actually excited about human potential, like Frieren once stated she was!
When Serie said "I shouldn't have taken human disciples.", what I understand is that it pains her every time her disciples die thus it's not good for her to keep getting more human disciples. However, like a moth attracted to flame, she eager to teach when she find a talent just like the brief exchange between her and Fern, she just couldn't help it.
She's just a tsundere. She adores her students and Flamme.

i like how whenever Serie talks about how useless the flower spell is she is always seen admiring a garden or flowers, even after Flamme's death and now here when talking to Frieren shes admiring the flowers, she really does miss her.

Serie and Frieren don't really hate each other; instead, they both see themselves reflected in each other.
Serie is portrayed as a combat mage, constantly advocating for magic to be used for noble purposes rather than mundane tasks like laundry.
On the other hand, Frieren pursues the idea of magic being integrated into dailylife, accessible to everyone for various useful spells.
However, Serie is the one who established the Mage Association, enabling contemporary humans to learn magic in a more regulated, progressive manner.
She also uses her knowledge of magic to establish "privileges" as incentives to encourage humans to pursue magic and to nurture many excellent disciples.
On the other hand, Frieren has ironically becoming the deadliest killer against demon of modern days.
The only disciple she educates was taken in somewhat reluctantly due to persuasion by a close friend.
Both of them have become the opposite of what they claim to be. But most importantly, It is their voluntary choices.
Serie simply refuses to acknowledge that she actually enjoys nurturing talent and spreading the study of magic.
Similarly, Frieren also refuses to admit that she gets excited when facing enemies in battle.
They don't actually hate each other, they just hate seeing their true selves reflected in each other

Man Himmel is just the biggest chad of all time isn’t he lol so insane to think that serie sees unimaginable potential in fern, and she believes fern could be the greatest human mage ever too. But she already has her granny, I mean master lol also serie is such a hater with frieren! But I’m sure it’s because she too sees great potential in her as well. I think deep down she’s just a softy tsundere
Serie doesn't hate Frieren, she is just frustrated with her. She believes that Frieren has so much potential that she could become as strong as she is eventually but she wasted her time perfecting her mana suppression alone and the last 80 years searching for "useless" spells as she calls them.
If she had trained and learned more spells and refined her technic over the centuries, she would be as skilled as an Elven mage of her age group at least to use Serie's own words, which is scary to think about it. If what we saw is an unskilled Elven mage, then what the hell was a skilled 1000 year old mage? That is why she failed her. To force her to start training seriously and not slack off all the time. She is like a grouchy mom nagging her rebellious daughter to take her studies seriously.
kpetalis Exactly people just hate when characters talk down the mc’s in serious they like. But Serie has the power and is way older to see Frieren’s wasting her potential for centuries.

@@Dell-ol6hbthey probably flesh out more thoughts at the end of their videos if you actually go to their channel. (Most) Reactors don’t like to pause for editing/syncing reasons. In reaction comps, this makes them come off as more clueless than they actually might be.
And there's me with no reaction because I've read a comment somewhere saying Serie is much more older.. they probably weren't trying to spoil but that alone already got me thinking she probably has more mana.

Serie must've been practicing mana suppression for as long if not longer than Frieren. If Lernen was able to spot Frieren's mana fluctuations after her having a thousand years to practice, but is unable to spot Serie's it means Serie's mana suppression is more refined than Freiren's

To those arguing about the fluctuating thing.
Frieren is better than Sernie when it comes to suppression of mana.
The entire meme is basically that you can use the mana you’re exposing. Sernie is expressing a lot of mana in her calm state and can do a lot in that state without putting out more mana, so the fluctuations rarely happens and is so small that only an expert can see it.
No one besides prolly Fern can see Frierens fluctuating mana, the only reason the old man could was that be got lucky while Frieren had to expose herself, she’s basically putting out 0.1% mana right, her speciality is that she can use more while still suppressing herself, but it’s really fucking hard and some very skilled mage could prolly detect it during certain situations. Sernie doesn’t even get close to this lvl of supression. She’s op as fuck but the entire point is that she has enough mana output to deal with most things without having to do real supression shit that Frieren is doing, so she never gets into a situation where she’s exposing her supression.
What I wouldn't have give for Frieren to create a field of Himmel's favorite flower instead of just saying which spell is her favorite
The fact that Serie‘s suppressed mana is the size of Frierens unsuppressed mana is probably not a coincidence. I wager that Serie wants people to underestimate her, much like Frieren does, but in case someone is capable enough to see through Frierens suppression, she still wants to keep up the image that she is at least as powerful as Frieren, making her the most powerful non-demon mage. Show them that you are the best, but not by how much.
I thought it was more Serie is just just so old and her mana has grown so much that even she can only suppress it so much. Cool to see different ways to interpret it.
@@kurtcameron91Considering how only Lernen managed to see her suppression you're probably correct over the "wants to be viewed at least better than Frieren." Even if she were to give the apparent win to Frieren on mana amount she'd still be known as the only mage that knows every spell. Serie's built diff, granny magic goblin.
@@kurtcameron91 Maybe you could be right about this. But then again, Serie suppressing her mana is just for kicks. Serie is almost a god in this universe (since there are no other godlike figures present.... talking about a deus ex machina type of character)

I feel like some of these people ( Esp the two in the middle ) lack the ability to understand things at deeper level, they take things at surface level for a fact. That's the problem with most of today's media in it that they literally spoon-fed everything to you and when once in a blue moon show like Frieren comes about. They lack the ability to understand plots/characters with multiple layers like Serie. I wonder if LOTR will ever win as much if it aired today given their " show don't tell " attributes which makes it so special and thats the thing that I love about Frieren as well. Also how on earth can only few of them catch the " even Lernen cant catch Serie's fluctuations " . That's like friggin insane revelation to me which made me all hyped up when I first saw it.

I think Serie didn't pass Frieren bc she reminds her too much of Flamme. Like how Frieren was also very hesitant with taking Fern as an apprentice. It's a burden they didn't consider carrying as human lives are fickle and unimpactful compared to elven lives. Which is a paradox in of itself.
Flamme and the Hero party were ultimately short lived but Frieren's experience with them made her cherish their lives more. Same with Flamme, who carved out the path for human mages yet Serie claims she doesn't acknowledge them when she actually does.
The fact she upholds and founded the Mage association is proof of how much she respects Flamme, training and inspiring more human mages just as she asked. Even going so far as giving them endless possibilities and the ultimate inspiration (Any spell reward) to ascend as first class mages. Lastly, she upholds the sanctity and the quality of mages so much that she barely makes anyone first class. Meaning that if they're not on par or at least as innovative, diligent and maybe more or less talented as Flamme was, they're not going to pass.
Flamme is the ultimate contradiction to herself.
I feel like Serie was lonely and was excited that someone saw through her mana instability.. It's like someone can understand her for a second.
In fact She loves and cares about every student she had taught. She knows everyone's personality clearly. She also kept the flowers field in the room though she said this is a nonsense magic.
