  • In which I experiment with a reiterated mash to see what happens to pH and efficiency, and experience a monster fermentation.

    Good to see you back Gary, very interesting video even for one who doesn’t use a Grainfather.

    Great video Gary, very pleased you back as it was your first Grainfather video that made me eventually buy one. I watched David' Heaths video on this process but as yet have never gone over a 5.5 kg grain bill in my Grainfather. Water treatment is something I must work on as I have just been adding the 5..2stabiliser crystals and some gypsum to certain mashes.

    Welcome back, really enjoyed your videos before right around when I got my grainfather. I just brewed this recipe, scaled down to 15 L as all my batches are, I reduced the mash water from 2.7 l/kg to 2.3 l/kg and extended the boil to 90 mins and managed 78% efficiency when I normally aim for 75%, I stirred twice at 20 and 60 mins. I used kveik yeast so I juts tried it for the first time last night and it's a really tasty beer. I've got a similar issue lately in my pH seems to be coming in a point or 2 low, need to check my carbonates too.
    Thanks for investigating the effects of reiterated mashing on pH, it's something that's bothered me before but i've not had a chance to test it.

      Martin Cumming Thanks for the feedback Martin - well done on the efficiency. I haven’t got to the bottom of my pH issue yet but I’ll keep you informed!

    Hi Gary, thanks for the video. What type/product is that adapter thing on your faucet? I've never seen one like that before but it looks like someting I could use. Thanks, cheers

      Hi - it's a tap (faucet) adaptor for a hosepipe that is designed for gardening use really and useful if you have mixer taps. This brand is Hoselock (I'm in England). If you look at gardening suppliers you may find it or something similar.

    Nice video and great to see you are back! Like you said graincrush and stirring would improve your numbers. Have you seen my latest reiterated mash video? I go more in depth there and cover sparge volumes. Water wise its impossible to be accurate for the second mash apart from ph but do your usual profile for style for the first one out there at least.

      Thanks David no I haven't seen your latest - I'll head over now and check it out. I'm waiting with baited breath for the rumoured Grainfather grain mill with integrated motor, then I'll definitely start crushing my own grain.

    Nice looking brewday! You could have use just a pinch of baking soda to raise the pH up to 5.5 pH, where you wanted. Next time ;-). Oh, and residual alkalinity is neither soft or harsh. RA is simply a measure that helps determine how resistant water pH is to change. Cheers!

      Thanks Tony. You are right on both counts of course. I wanted to see what would happen throughout the process so I didn't intervene with baking soda. And I have high RA, so I tend to think of it as 'harsh' or 'strong'. I am puzzled by my pH landing low after so many brews of nailing it using BrewNWater. Something has changed but I can't put my finger on it. I have tested my RA and it seems to be stable.

    Gary, very interesting video, thank you. Can I ask, at what point in the brewing process would you add some DME to maybe boost your original gravity?

    • @garyjames2664
      @garyjames2664  6 років тому +1

      Alfie Franklin Thanks - Ideally I’d add it late in the boil or just after the boil has finished and I have tested my gravity. If the boiler is still running it can be better to take some wort out and dissolve the DME in it and then return - to avoid burning the DME on the element.
