Awesome video! I PROMISE this is coming from a place of positivity! YAKISUGI-ITA. Pronounced, yah-key, soo-ghee eetah. That is what this is. Shou shugi ban well if you went to Japan and said that, they would look at you like you had 3 heads lol. yaki means to burn, char or grill. sugi means CYPRESS. Well the equivalent in north America would be CEDAR. (cedar/cypress are used because this technique was used for building!) but, for art, decor etc. use whatever! and ITA means little plank. so, burnt cedar plank. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ON UA-cam FOR WOOD WORKERS PLEASEEEE. Also, your cedar planks( if thats what your choice is) should be arranged in a small teepee type configuration and then tied at the top. underneath should be a small smoldering fire. Smoke should come out the top like a chimney. Your vids are awesome, funny, and I think you are a woodworker to watch! but please please for the love of wood and all that is um idk wood like lol YAKISUGI-ITA!!!!!! you're awesome, your vids are awesome sending good vibes to you!

If I’m building say a floating shelf with my corners 45 degrees and glued would I cut and assemble the shelf after the burn? Is assembling and then burning the way to go? I was nervous that with a heavy char I would open gaps in my corners if I assembled first. I love you videos brother. Keep them coming please!!!!
Hey Brady! Welcome to the Fray. If you're doing mitered corners, I would suggest cutting your stock a little long, burning and then cutting your 45s after the fact. You can always come in and give the edges a light torch to match the rest. Cheers

Thanks for video! I like the sun bleach. I see that company also has an "antique white". Have you tried that one?

LOL
*_Fire! Fire! FIRE!_*
Great video! ty
When you showed the after photos of the sun bleached with steel wool and without, did you label them backwards?
So if there isn't a finish on the charred part will come off on clothes and shoes then...?
A top coat seals the char in.
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild Love it!
Is it possible to do this on pressure treated pine deck that is already in place? I would love to do this on our deck. It has been in place for almost 4 years
You can. However, please be mindful of what you're releasing when you burn pressure-treated lumber. The chemicals in the lumber are toxic. Wear a respirator and make sure your neighbors aren't within close proximity.
@@BuildDadBuild It's a good thing I don't have neighbors. LOL.. Will I need to brush it and seal / stain it or will I be able to just let it be natural after that?
@@landonweatherly4258 Probably brush and seal...since you'll be walking on it, the char will come loose if not.
I know this. Unfortunately the incorrect term has been misappropriated for this technique. And in a world driven by keywords it is now “Shou Sugi Ban “
Cheers
Do you only use the grey 80 grit Nyalox brush or do you use the other grits as well?
I mainly use the 80 grit. Occasionally I use the orange...never the blue! LOL
Cheers
@@BuildDadBuild thank you!
Great videos; just a curious question. Why oil before staining?
Don’t oil before staining.
@@BuildDadBuild I agree, but what exactly did you apply to the wood before you stained?
Water
Do u use a wood conditioner before u stain it?
Hey Ben!
No, I do not.
Cheers
Hmmm maple looks pretty good if id say
Glad you dig!
Cheers, Sparky
I think I’ve watched all of your videos. Every time I search for shou sugi ban you pop up. When you showed the difference in the wire brush and the Nyalox you showed the Nyalox side twice 🤣🤣🤣 My wire brush actually makes it look like yours did with the Nyalox bits. Definitely going to invest in the Nyalox bits though! Wire brush kills my hands 😂 You’re sense of humor is like mine. We’d have too much fun in a shop together 🤣🤣🤣 Love your show man, keep it up!
LOL Good work.

Its not right to put lacquer on wood
👍
I'm assuming you're a veteran based on the blanket you're using as a "drop cloth". Excellent video, thanks for the education and several good laughs. Single malt scotch for me please.
Not a veteran. Although appreciative of those who serve(d). But I do have a couple of those blankets laying around. LOL
Cheers!!

I’m a new subscriber just getting into this technique and have a question for you.

This is so happening at my house!!!
Noice!
Great video quick question after a finish project how is the smell will the wife complain about the burnt smell in the house if the finish project is for indoors
Thanks!
The smell goes away fairly quickly. If you finish it, it'll be gone completely.
Cheers
I have been enjoying your videos! I am making my wife quilt ladders and thought about burning the 6’ 2x4s and then finishing with a weathered grey. Any thoughts on?
Sounds great!
Great video content and commentary. I am planning to make an american flag similar to what I can see in the background ~10 min. Got any tips for that? Specifically, should I burn the wood before I glue the different sections together?
You can see that build here:

What about birch butcher block
I don’t know if birch has the grain pattern for it.
Does the method give your wood waterproof properties? I would like to paint - burn beehives. Nice video, very detailed. Thank you.
It is supposed to waterproof the wood. That being said, I usually do a topcoat anyway, even if it's just oil.
Cheers
Hey there never done this method before, plan on it very soon. But wonder cause I'm gonna be doing a bigger build to prolong the life of nyalox brushes I've purchased like the nylon bathroom brush you've got but more rounded brush that will attach to my drill. Have you tried other nylon drill attached brushes??
Big fan by the way your sunbleached Sugi ban is why I'm gloving up.
I have used some other brushes with varying success. I'd still say the Nyalox brushes are the best I've found as far as durability.
Cheers!
Anyone tried a drum sander instead of brushes etc.?
drum sander won't get the charred area out of the grooves of the wood.
I’m considering trying drum sanding, curious if anyone did that before..if not l guess I’ll let ya know the results
@@BuildDadBuildok that settles that. Thanks 🙏
Hi Nick..I tried to deep burn a wood with dimensions of 60 x 25 x 1.8 cm but it bent in the middle..why did this happen?
The longer the piece, the more likely it is to warp. Try burning the backside to straighten it back out.
Cheers
Много говорит!!! Болтун
Do you happen to have any videos burning cedar? I’ve tried but it seems like it always comes out far too dark to look any good.
Hey Dylan!
I worked with Cedar some in this video:

Have you ever tried this technique on a door that has already been stained and sealed? I have 3 antique ones and I’m thinking of doing this with multi colored stains. What do you think?
I have not, but I know people who have. Strip the doors, sand them down and you're good to go!
Cheers
Awesome bro!! I need to do this soon.
Yes you do!
Cheer brother
digging the content and your style brotherman! subscribing! can't wait to watch a bunch more of your stuff
All aboard!!! 😜😜
I love your attitude. Dude you got a lot of energy that’s great.
Awesome. I thought well I'll give it a shot. I'm painting in the shop shop I might as well learn from Nick again. Plus some kick butt music always help. Cheers. Keep it up.!!!!
PS... i hope ad sense is playing you got all the freaking commercial breaks. At least they were well timed at the dundas. 👍
Thanks, Devin!
Oh...AdSense pays...just not all that much. LOL

Looks awesome! Can you use mineral spirits to clean the burnt surface or would you recommend just sticking with water?
I think mineral spirits would work just fine.
Cheers
I've just discovered Shou Sugi Ban (I know? Where have I been?) Your tutorials are out there...by far the best in terms of quality of product, teaching, enthusiasm, ideas and entertainment. I can't wait to get started. Keep up the good work. You're awesome.
Marion
Thank you!

quick question does the soft wood need to be plained and smooth first or just go at it naturally
If you're going for a deep burn just go to town. The fire will create a texture and the nylon brushes smooth it out.
Cheers
Did I see a video of you using a restorer for digging out the char? Do you recommend a certain restorer for Shou Sugi ban?
You did. I recently picked on up.
This is the one that was recommended to me.
