    I followed the super-easy instructions in this video...installed 64GB of RAM. I previously was editing footage with 8GB, and it was getting so laggy, on big projects. This upgrade has made a world of difference in my editing speed...and for a very competitive price.
    Great investment. Thank you for making this video!!

      Hey, I have the same model and I’m now getting frustrated using final cut and after about an hour I get a ram is almost filled up notification by clean my Mac every 20 seconds. Did you notice any problems after you added the new modules? Did you mix match? And last question, where exactly did you buy the modules from? Thank you 🙏

    Thanks for the tutorial! One thing I just learned: If you try to combine the original RAM that apple already had in the computer with the new ones you just bought, it will not work (example: If you bought crucial memory card, the other ram cards has to be crucial cards. If they are apple RAM cards, then the other has to be Apple cards not Crucial). All of the ram has to match with their brand. I bought 2- 16GB of ram for my mac thinking it would work with the apple RAM but it did not. So, definitely keep that in mind when buying RAM!

      Hi Kristen. I've just stuck 16 gig RAM from Crucial into my new 27" iMac and left the Apple 8 gig RAM in 2 slots (2 x 4 gig) and it worked a treat. 24 gig RAM in total and no issues whatsoever combining the original Apple with Crucial.

      You can mix brands with no problem! Apple can be mean, but not that mean. lol.

    • @LoloymeetsHyojinaYT
      @LoloymeetsHyojinaYT 4 роки тому +10

      It will work. Just leave the original ones to their original slots and install the new ones on the vacant slot. (slot 1&3 ; slot 2&4).

    • @hiro32hiro32
      @hiro32hiro32 4 роки тому +1

      Probably you don't get max 2666MHz speed if you leave the original RAMs in slot 1& 3 and install a new pair in slot 2&4. If you install the original RAMs in slot 1&2 and the new pair in slot 3&4, you probably get max 2666MHz speed, but then dual-channel would be tuned off...

    I just installed 32 gigs of ram From Crucial (2x16) on my Base 2019 iMac 3.0 GHz i5. So now total ram is up to 40 gigs with the stock 8 gigs it comes with. everything seems to be running great. I'm fairly confident you could upgrade it to 64 on the base model

    Thanks for this. I went ahead and upgraded my mac this morning following your video and I'm really glad I watched it. Things didn't quite go to plan - on restart I just got a blank screen and some really loud beeping noises, at which point, I'm not gonna lie - I freaked out a little! Had I broken it?? Having your soothing confident voice was my saviour, I just took it apart and started again. Some of the help forums suggested doing a PRAM restart at the same time so I did exactly that and all was well! Thank goodness I had your video - it reassured me that I HAD done it correctly and it just needed a PRAM reset to work.

    Added 64GB of OWC RAM and my 2019 27" 5K started behaving poorly. On Apple Care so I took it in. Genius bar said nothing wrong with it but we formatted it for you. You're welcome.
    Problem persisted they blamed the RAM. OWC exchanged the RAM and the problem persisted. Took it to an independent authorized Mac repair shop and they said they see a lot of 5K machines with problems when more than 32GB installed. Ordered a 32GB kit from OWC. Hope this works.

    Very nicely done, well explained and highly helpful. I have ordered my 128RAM but am awaiting delivery to install. 8MB is ridiculous for them to even offer at nearly $3000 for this MAC, so I blame Apple for that. They always underpower their desktops so this is needed, even for the most basic gaming or applications/video. I am shocked how little runs well with this MAC so 128MB will be a much needed upgrade.

    Hey, I wanted to let guys know, yes this computer will do 128 GB RAM, but that ram overheats often, the simple fix, leave the back cover off, and in my case, I put on a little muffin fan brings the temp down quite a bit, these models are known for running hot if you place a cooler fan behind it really makes it run better.

  • @kikiwora
    @kikiwora 5 років тому +17

    But you didn't try to actually load those 128GB of RAM.
    OFC you can put it there and system will detect it. But can it actually use that amount of RAM without any issues? That's the question no-one answered us yet.

    • @MightyJax
      @MightyJax 5 років тому +3

      Roman Suvorov - the computer will only see/(use) 64gb of RAM, if you use software to overclock your computer you potentially could use the 128gb but your logic board will end up paying the price in time. You will also experience high fan rates and heat issues depending on the task.

      You 64Bit Mac OS can adress a lot more Memory 18 EByte to be exact. The amount that CPU’s can address nowadays are the limiting factor (depends on what model cpu)
      The i9 in this 2019 can work with 128 GB of hardware memory

      Sadly the 21.5 ram is not user upgradable so you HAVE TO upgrade it at time of purchase and once you do, the price makes it unworthy against the 27 that even in base config is 6-core and not much more expensive.
      I have a 21.5 from 2013 and I love it, but damn those 8gb are quite limiting and it's a 6 year old machine, 8gb in a current desktop is lame.

    you are supposed to unplug the mac and wait a minute , or hold down the power button with the computer unplugged before touching ram chips. this is called ' clearing the smc controller '
    if you do not, then parts of the motherboard are powered to keep the smc controller alive. power to the ram chips are even maintained by residual energy of capacitors in the power supply.
    smc controller is always on , pram is not. smc is ram pram is nvram

Found a youtube video about resetting the NVRAM. Powered down, let it sit for 30 minutes, unplugged it for 10+ seconds, plugged in for 10+ seconds, then reset the NVRAM. Seems to have accepted the upgrade and seems to be running well now. Will let you know after I try a cartooning app that has been bogging down before the upgrade.

      WARNING...they show this as a cool thing, but it messed my computer up. Had to start fresh and reinstall time backups several times of the next few days! It SEEMS to have settled on the 64 gig comfortably with 32gig in bay 1 & 32gig in bay3. Therefore, I'm selling the additional 64 gig for $350, since I've already bought it and someone else can possibly benefit, by also learning from my experience. Anyone who wants the 32 gig, message me. This is a cool concept...but be warned, the computer doesn't seem to be able to handle the whole 128 gig.

    Also, the macrummor forums also full of gobbers saying that their system crashes when installing more than 3x32gb chips, so now 11 months latter, did you have any problems ?

    Can you tell us more about the RAM model that you have installed on the video? Or maybe some other brands of RAM that you might suggest.

    Jeff thank you for the instructions. Just one question. I just bought a new 27", it came with 8GB RAM. Can I add two 8GB stick to the open two slots?

  • @susanpratt3290

    I would go with the 8 GB of ram and get my ram elsewhere. Thus I would use that money for CPU, GPU and Storage (1TB SSD). I do love the new internal upgrades and that the Ram Slot in the back is still there. I do like the look of the I-Mac (I also would go with the 27 Inch model so that I can get an 8 Core, 9th Generation model. With 8 GB of Video ram on top of that. I plan to do video rendering. I also want to check out Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro, as well as having my Creative Cloud transferred to the I-Mac. I also plan to get an external DVD-Reader/writer from LG (which has Blue Ray writing capabilities as well). Thank you for showing the steps to install the memory,

    NOTE that these are 26667, the "on sale" chips are 26666, the 26666 are what came with my iMac i9 5K, so I just got 64g for $263

    As you are the "egpu" guy... It would be really cool to have a video "580X with additional egpu or vega 48?" Pricewise, it is actually pretty close. Big question though: Can you use the internal monitor?

    I will follow your advice; I saw the ram upgrade option with the seller and now I feel more confident to do this upgrade. My 27 inch came with a initial 8gb ram configuration and do to feel comfortable; I bought 32 ram in Amazon and now the processor temperature decreases and don’t hear the internal fans working. Thanks for your post.

    Thanks for your instructional video. I just brought the middle model Imac 27 5k 2019 model with 6 i5 processors. Unlike you I don’t want to go to 128 GB. I want to keep the existing 4 GB modules and add 2 x 16 bGB memory modules ending up with 40 GB. What I’m worried about is whether this configuration is possible without degrading access time. Will the 4GB modules work with the 16Gb modules maintaining 2667 MHz and if so are their any memory configuration rules you are aware of with the 4 memory slots. You mentioned dual channel support in your video.

    Why doesn't Apple publish the actual maximum RAM available for these iMac models? It seems like it would be a selling feature.

    Maybe nice to know that when you add two 16GB Dimms you could just leave your 2 4 GB's in place.. We now have 40 GB's.. running fine. slot 1 & 3 have 4 GB's each, slot 2 & 4 have 16 GB's each.

    using 128gb of ram in 2019 thats ok, but why you choose 575X 4gb model only, i am using 2017 model, 8GB vram is there.

    Will, it tremendously improves the AE performance by having more RAMS? Especially doing the motion design in 4K.

    I don't have an iMac 2019 27 inch yet, hopefully in the fall around November. Since I am not a graphic artist at all and would only use the iMac for daily use and music. I find 128 GB quite a lot but equally interesting. Greetings from Belgium.

    I needed a vacuum sucker to pull the cover off , it wouldn't come out to where I could shove something under it .
    I ordered mine with only 8gbx2 and then got 16gbx2 Timetec so I have a total of 40gb ram for now .
    Mix and match brands and sizes , no problems.
    My 2009 early iMac had only 8gb max so I figure I will never use the 40gb.
