I kinda felt like Skin left me with a lukewarm feel, this one is kinda better in my opinion. Not as good as the mixtape, but still enjoy it. Feeling more like a 7 than a 6
Ah but it is so disjointed, I feel like a lot of songs don't properly set themselves or other songs up. Still - so much pioneering creativity and technical mastery displayed once again with Palaces, so I'm hoping for a follow up LP or two, like he went with after skin. I agree with melon's critique mostly, although he ignored some cool tracks and the whole nature theme.
This album felt like flume continuing to grow and experiment with his sound, I am also always impressed by his ability to find the most angelic vocal performances for these tracks. Mostly it feels liike anthony is spot on with this rating, lots of highlights, and lots of moments which didn't work, but thats the nature of experimentation.
I think most of the features were not good and the problem is those "angelic voices" that you find anywhere in the electonic scene...and that didn't suit his productions.
@@greyemrednus it was the lyrics for me more than anything. The sound design wiry bass also reminded me of SOPHIE damb near immediately lol. But you're right Only Fans is definitely more like a SOPHIE track.

First listen i had a luke warm reaction, but with every repeat listen i love it more and more. Definetly missing some more varied vocalists and more interesting song progressions. His sound design is so damn good, it makes me really interested to hear more from him.
Saw this album live the other day and it really brings it to life. I have a differnt perspective of this project now and I do really enjoy it. It’s a 8/ten for me
6/10 is a bit too low imo, because Flume wasn't intending to produce a standalone "LP" but a piece of multimedia art in collaboration with Jonathan Zawada. Kinda unfair to rate a product after looking at half of it.
The album is not that good and the visuals won't help. Flume is not an album artist..that's why his mixtape works better. He is still very good at what he is doing.
@@rokale7418 I mean, looking at different elements in the visualizer like how Flume prints intriguing logos like "VHEMT" and "XX XY" on his bike, there seems to be some sort of a dark hidden message/concept in the album, which really boosts its artistic value. Music is not only about how good it sounds
@@jerrydean9239 Music is still music. It's always superb to produce good visuals that complete and enhance the music concept to a new artistry level but if the music initially is not that good, visuals will not save it whatever their greatness.
Sleepless will always be my favourite song of this genre. Although I just just don’t get the spark I used to from flume. The production is still absolutely stunning although it’s not as wild and experimental as something you’d see from Flying Lotus for example. It’s just not as original as it used to be.
I think it’s “not as original” because Flume found a sound & he’s essentially stuck with it. Skin was definitely a change from what the Self Titled LP was. Hi, This is Flume was clearly a change up from Skin still. Then you have Palaces, which is a combination of Skin & Hi, This is Flume. The Flume LP will always hold a special place in my art. Will always be considered one of the most innovative albums in the EDM genre. But to me, that album is a stand alone. None of his last two LP’s & the EP sound remotely similar to the debut album. In reality, the Flume LP was an extension of his sound that he was making with Emoh in WhatSoNot. Skin, ironically, was clearly a “reskin” or “rebranding” of his sound. I get what you mean by “not getting the same spark.”. The Flume LP on first listen was an amazing adventure & I wish I could listen to that album for the first time again just sitting in my car or in my bed. Skin & so on have been growers. I never got “excited” from the first listens. All of them required me to revisit them for me to truly enjoy them. Nonetheless, Flume is one of the best that EDM has to offer.
@@MrJohnnym10 EDM has really taken another step forward with flume has had to bring. His production style (which is perfectly summed up in sleepless) had never been seen before aside from sampling, where he took freshly recorded vocals and used them as part of the beat itself. I will always enjoy the style he brand, I just wish he’d find a way to recreate the Flume LP, just so I can envision listening to the original for the first time again. It’s truly one of the best experimental edm takes ever
IMO... Good Songs: Highest Building, ESCAPE, I Can't Tell, Get U, Jasper's Song, Hollow, Go, Palaces Okay Songs: Say Nothing, DHLC, Sirens Bad Songs: Love Light Worst Song of All Time: Only Fans
Definitely feels a bit more mainstream, especially after HTIF. Don't get me wrong, I love flume and it's important for artists to evolve, but the premise of flume pushing future bass to new levels is what made me love him, most of the tracks on this are almost mainstream future bass
I just wanna say I very much appreciate you taking the time to give this album a full review, even if you're not in love with it. To me, flume has consistently been one of the top producers with some of the best ideas. His production is consistently colorful and interesting, but everytime he tries to do a half pop record, it seems like some of the ideas don't always coalesce as cleanly and as intriguing as they could
You go to a critic to get an educated “opinion”, and as always he delivered. As a Flume fan I would have obviously loved him going crazy over this LP I enjoy so much, but that is not his job. Great review! I just wish you would have talked about “highest building”, would have loved to hear your opinion on the opening track.
Pretty much the score I gave, I expected the album to be worse actually because i had a middling opinion of the singles that came out prior, but it ended up being solid. That said, I still rate HTIF as his best project, it’s so tight and the tracks go hard
kind of surprised by the lukewarm reception this album is getting. i wasn't a huge flume fan, i thought a lot of his music was pretty bland (with a few gems like the you&me remix). but i really like this album! i was honestly blown away on first listen. had it on repeat for a few days there. some of it is a little formulaic, but not in a way that really took away from the experience for me. i like the pop songs, i like the non-pop songs, i like the sound design (though i might just be less bored with these sounds then some other people?). this was like an 8 or a 9 for me
I recommend listening to "Hi This Is Flume". The album has more of an experimental sound but it feels more cohesive imo than this album. I enjoyed this album as well but not as much as his previous work. I would give it an 8 out of 10 too
You think the remix of a popular song is the least bland not the experimental pop or songs without a baseline? I mean everyone has their opinion but that’s just interesting to me.
@ Scott like i said i wasn't a fan so i hadn't heard that much of his music (i was more stating the impression i had as an outsider than my considered opinion on his music). so that remix was on of the only ones that id heard that I thought was really good. (also its pretty different from the original, like i think its about as much his song as any producer collab.)
He took the polished nature of Skin and made it more Hi this is Flume-y. It totally lands right in the middle for me and I wish it was more HTIF like. It’s good, not great. Only thing I disagree on was I Can’t Tell. Easily my favorite song of the album
I feel like he was trying to make a mash up of the pop side of skins and the experimentation from HTIF mixtape and I don't think it panned out in the best ways
Flume is my favourite artist, so I may be just a little biased when I say this album is a solid 10, but I do encourage anyone reading this to listen to the album more than just once. It'll grow on you very quickly.
Maybe it’s just a serious case of nostalgia goggles, but I still feel like the first album is his best work. He’s no doubt improved as a producer, and his newer albums are fantastic, but that first album is incredible. The vocal chops on Sintra and Sleepless, the massive groove on Holdin on, the relentless sparkle of Space Cadet. Those songs were pure magic
I heard about flume through a thesmithplays stream (zombies player). I took a listen to a few songs, then EPs, and now this. Haven’t listened to it yet but it’s high in my to do list.

@@cestmoi4153 okay
I loved Flume x Quiet Bison. been a big fan of Quiet Bison's for some time now and it's incredible how detailed the glitchy synth patches are on his discography. Hope to see him on here more
Highest Building is one of the best songs of the year
Oh man I can’t believe Highest Building wasn’t mentioned? Oklou is incredible and this track is easily one of the best on the album. I wish you’d talk about Oklou because Galore is seriously incredible.
I would personally love to see a review on the final noisia project.
Keep dreaming. The hardest EDM I've ever seen melon listen to was a single song from G Jones and Eprom
From “Say It” to “Say Nothing” Flume does it again.
One of the Strongest points of Flume is how he can search talent imo
I found out a bunch of cool artists for the Flume collabos or his Playlist
I think most of the features were not good and the problem is those "angelic voices" that you find anywhere in the electonic scene...and that didn't suit his productions.
Flume and Harry Styles both getting 6s makes me feel viscerally ill
Fully agree with nearly everything said BUT. “EDM Music”…c’mon Fantano. What’s the M for?
Metronome. Final answer.
@@certainpeople159 well done lol
If he said ED Music, people might assume it's an album about erectile dysfunction.
Simply: 2022 Masterpiece here
Highest Building made me cry upon the first few listens. R.I.P. SOPHIE
Wait Sophie? 😳
@@emie1170 Not a feature, but a tribute - some say. Even though Only Fans sounds much more like SOPHIE to me.
@@greyemrednus it was the lyrics for me more than anything. The sound design wiry bass also reminded me of SOPHIE damb near immediately lol. But you're right Only Fans is definitely more like a SOPHIE track.

Does anyone know what brand of eye glasses melon is wearing?
Man whenever Flume came out with new music it just feel isn't enough,i want more and more music, and every year expecting what will be his new song o album
same, bustin’ a colorful nut but being blue balled at the same time somehow 🤣
Sirens is 🔥🔥🔥 idgafos what anyone says....
I was seriously into that song when it came out, i was really mad when Melon said it was a mid song, same with Say Nothing
It sends me flyin’
I think a lot of people can agree there are a few ridiculously amazing tracks on this album but overall the experience should have been a little bit more.I still think it adds a great feel to his line up and collection of music and I'm excited to see what else he will drop in the future
Loving this album!
Love Light straight up gives me Flume meets Skin vibes.
I think, especially for an EDM artist, I think he’s the best in the game. Love his songs that were strictly production and shows his emotions throughout the album. 9/10 album, can’t wait to see 3 of his shows this year!
05:34 "EDM music"
First listen i had a luke warm reaction, but with every repeat listen i love it more and more.
Definetly missing some more varied vocalists and more interesting song progressions.
His sound design is so damn good, it makes me really interested to hear more from him.
Saw this album live the other day and it really brings it to life. I have a differnt perspective of this project now and I do really enjoy it. It’s a 8/ten for me
Highest building ft oklou has to be one of my favorite songs of the year
i can’t be the only one that absolutely loved only fans
I disagree with your opinion, Mr Fantano
6/10 is a bit too low imo, because Flume wasn't intending to produce a standalone "LP" but a piece of multimedia art in collaboration with Jonathan Zawada. Kinda unfair to rate a product after looking at half of it.
The album is not that good and the visuals won't help. Flume is not an album artist..that's why his mixtape works better. He is still very good at what he is doing.
i think the objective of this album is being popular, mainstream enough both to be known and to spread its message
@@rokale7418 I mean, looking at different elements in the visualizer like how Flume prints intriguing logos like "VHEMT" and "XX XY" on his bike, there seems to be some sort of a dark hidden message/concept in the album, which really boosts its artistic value. Music is not only about how good it sounds
he is using art (both his and Zawada's) as a mean of communication
@@jerrydean9239 Music is still music. It's always superb to produce good visuals that complete and enhance the music concept to a new artistry level but if the music initially is not that good, visuals will not save it whatever their greatness.
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. I thought all the features were highlighted well and the themes of nature breathed in this album.
Not too late to review Preacher’s Daughter, melon
If you want an adventurous Australian artist review the LP She's So Cool by Wet Kiss
I just listened to the first song and it sounds like them tuning their instruments for 3
Min. Not for me prob.
Love to hear your thoughts on the new Gospel album. Really been vibing to it lately
IMO...
Good Songs: Highest Building, ESCAPE, I Can't Tell, Get U, Jasper's Song, Hollow, Go, Palaces
Okay Songs: Say Nothing, DHLC, Sirens
Bad Songs: Love Light
Worst Song of All Time: Only Fans
The sound design on Hollow was made by decoding signals sent from Mars. You just can't ignore that song, at least for the sake of Marso Sapiens.

Flume is my fucking father and theres nothing i can do bout it
Empress of - "Dance for you"
Definitely feels a bit more mainstream, especially after HTIF. Don't get me wrong, I love flume and it's important for artists to evolve, but the premise of flume pushing future bass to new levels is what made me love him, most of the tracks on this are almost mainstream future bass
Jaspers song is the best track on here imo. i really love it.
Same here
Go is my new favorite flume song tbh, but everything else just left me wanting for more hi this is flume mixtape ya know
"get u" is a masterclass of progressive tracks, absolutely amazing transformative work
"Hi This is Flume" is still something i jam to frequently, especially when i just want something that I know will "carry" me through something.
I felt this 6/10 coming in my chest for days now, everything that pushes Polachek more into mainstream is fine with me tho.
I just wanna say I very much appreciate you taking the time to give this album a full review, even if you're not in love with it. To me, flume has consistently been one of the top producers with some of the best ideas. His production is consistently colorful and interesting, but everytime he tries to do a half pop record, it seems like some of the ideas don't always coalesce as cleanly and as intriguing as they could
are you planning on reviewing the new ethel cain???
You go to a critic to get an educated “opinion”, and as always he delivered. As a Flume fan I would have obviously loved him going crazy over this LP I enjoy so much, but that is not his job. Great review! I just wish you would have talked about “highest building”, would have loved to hear your opinion on the opening track.
At least Highest Building mentioned in the description because this piece with the queen Oklou is the easily my favorite here
“EDM Music” - Antony Fantanny
Giving onlyfans your least fav shows your true betrayal of the ones you love
He still calls it wonky 🤦♂️
🤣
I loved the album, but still great review! I hope you review the new Decapitated album coming this Friday.
Are you gonna review new Everything Everything album?
@@lolitsajoke77 that's what I'm saying. I love that track but that easily one of his weakest remixes.
@ Scott
like i said i wasn't a fan so i hadn't heard that much of his music (i was more stating the impression i had as an outsider than my considered opinion on his music). so that remix was on of the only ones that id heard that I thought was really good. (also its pretty different from the original, like i think its about as much his song as any producer collab.)
You know what Melon? You're right!!
Good, now please review Preacher's Daughter by Ethel Cain. The album is one of the best indie albums this year.
Sharing your deep hatred for the people of Australia for 6 minutes doesn't count as a review Anthony
He took the polished nature of Skin and made it more Hi this is Flume-y. It totally lands right in the middle for me and I wish it was more HTIF like. It’s good, not great. Only thing I disagree on was I Can’t Tell. Easily my favorite song of the album
this album feels like an awkward standoff between his experimental production and reach for mainstream pop.. skin did it better
I feel like he was trying to make a mash up of the pop side of skins and the experimentation from HTIF mixtape and I don't think it panned out in the best ways
anthony im waiting on the bad bunny review 😩😩😩
Cmon it’s a strong 7 light 8 Flume doesn’t miss.
I really enjoyed the album. It’s growing on me.
Flume is my favourite artist, so I may be just a little biased when I say this album is a solid 10, but I do encourage anyone reading this to listen to the album more than just once. It'll grow on you very quickly.
Really digging this album, I don't know where I sit this album in his discography but it feels like a mix of Skin and the mixtape
Flume is also secretly Silicon Valley's Ron LaFlamme. Dont Ask.
Melon be like "no Peggy, slowthai, or SOPHIE??? 6/10!!"
If Flume put the sound of a car crash will actually count as a SOPHIE collab?
