A round shiny object rolled right by us and stopped at the bottom of the wall. I had no idea what it was, but one of our group, Mylar, knew exactly. And it wasn’t good news. It was a wheel nut from one of the bikes that had just passed us at such a huge velocity. The Marshal needed to be informed, the bike needed to be stopped. But no-one knew which bike had lost it. There were minutes before the next place a message could be relayed to the riders at Ramsay. After Ramsay comes the Mountain, the most difficult and dangerous part of the course. An idea suddenly struck me. We reviewed the shots on the camera. The last bike of the three was Guy Martin. I zoomed in on the shot via the screen on the back of my camera. Unbelievably, the wheel nut was captured flying through the air just as it had left Guy’s bike. The Marshal was quickly on the radio to the check point at Ramsay and a black flag was used to tell Guy to stop.
Thanks ,4 the up date and good job ! Do you still have the nut & did you get too talk too the nut's owner !?! (Guy ) get it !!! Wouldn't that just be cool 😎 4you ! Lucky b@sterd !?! I'd like to see that interview ? Good job &good luck ,you may have saved someone's life !?! Wow...
Dont mean to cause an argument but the bikes at the tt dont use wheel nuts they use a through axle the is easily removed for fast wheel changes in the pits but the piece of metal could have been multiple things possibly a part of a tire most bolts if there is any that were to come lose are normally wire locked to prevent the bike falling apart from the speed they are going
I've combed UA-cam looking for the footage of the wheel nut coming off Guy Martins bike which is reported to have been captured on camera according to Comments here by "A King" that apparently lead to the Black flagging incident.
They were always picking at unfortunate Guy Martin.... I'll never forget when he was penalised for speeding in pit lane 0,1 mph over the limit ! Sickening ...
I was at the bungalow within earshot of a marshal n his airwave terminal(radio).. all it said was " black flag number 4 " Seconds later it then said "possible loss of wheel nut"....
If it was a front axle nut (the marshals were looking at the back of the bike, which is confusing), then the nut is a locking device as the axle is threaded into the left fork leg. Perhaps next time they will use a nyloc nut, or a drilled axle and castle nut with a split pin. Neither will come undone by themselves. Without either of those locking devices the flexing of the fork under racing stresses can cause such a nut to work loose..... I guess it just wasn't tight enough; they usually stay done up OK...
They run quick change axles at the TT. No lockwire or cotter pin because they are changing wheels out mid race. Fronts are usually still safety wired as they only change back tires. Swingarms are modified (look up Harris swingarms) so the axle goes in from the non drive side and threads directly into the drive side chain adjuster. There isn't even an axle nut. There are some good tt pit stop videos that show how the axles thread in.
Can you imagine trying to get a split pin in and out in the pits 😂. I'm not even remotely an expert but surely wheels don't require a lock wire, correct me if I'm ( very possibly) wrong.

If the object was already on the road and guy's bike just rolled over flicking the UFO to the side - than he was wrongly stopped.....
The photographer should have been black flagged. Stay on the target, and quit zooming in and out.
I would have been too. The TT is not "just a race". It's "THE RACE".
I was thinking the same. How hard is it? It would have been interesting to see what was going on.
Gutted Guy never got one such a brilliant rider, but its put him on great path to doing some mega stuff.
Good on ya Guy!

Haha, think he had glue in his pockets anawl!
Guy Martin escaped death at least 4 times..... crazy...
Let's not think about the movie Final Destination...
when God protects a good man he escapes everything .
Good to see the close-up on Guy unclogging his left ventricle.

lock wire surely required for scrutineering...

well said my lady, joe🇮🇪💚☘️
Guy's own massive nuts would have easily compensated any nut issue the bike had.
Sub titles on this for the tanoy are like an alien language
what was he black flagged for?
He stopped at the pits and they forgot to put a nut back on one of the wheels, lucky it didnt fall off
Richard Walmsley no.. the nut was fly away itself~

Why do the officials have knee sliders and leathers on?
because they get there by bike, either fireblades or yam R1
Because pretty much all the volunteer marshals are bikers, so we’re on our bikes when we go to our marshalling points around the circuit.
