Remember that the reason why he wanted to catch The Vulture so badly was to impress Tony Stark and join the Avengers. He's still a kid and immature, not until at the end where he realized it's not bad fighting crime in a neighborhood scale. Turning down Tony's offer to join the Avengers was a first sign of his maturity.
