  • The wave of Title IX hit North Central High School when the women athletes in the class of 1978 walked the hallways. This class was eager and willing to play whatever sport was offered to them. By 1976-1977, Spokane Public Schools offered tennis, gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track, golf, and softball to girls. It was a long, but positive road to get to this point for the class of 1978. They believe they were the right group at the right time to lay a foundation for girls sports for years to come.
Back in 1978, some girls received varsity letters, but most didn't. What better way to celebrate the recent 50th anniversary of Title IX than to give the women of 1978 what they deserved 45 years ago. Lorri Slauson got the idea when a friend had received an award. Not only was that friend honored, but she received her athletic letter from high school.
Lorri and her classmates celebrated their 45th class reunion, and she handed out athletic letters to every girl who participated in sports in those four years of high school.
