Rule 4B : be aware of sitting still for too long. Many years ago, in my 30's I got a thrombosis in my leg because of sitting recording and mixing for 5-10 hours a day. Get up walk around every 40 minutes guys... thrombosis kills you! I am a big fan of this channel and as a friend I want you to know, this is a genuine WARNING ⚠️ blood clots can move from the leg into the lungs and YOU DIE! All the tutorials and equipment in the world mean nothing if you aren't here to enjoy the process. ❤️BE SAFE ❤️ LOVE FROM LONDON 🇬🇧 x
Damn fr. Good luck, fam. That is not a fun thing to struggle with.
Soooooo True Sooooo Wise! Thanks!
Thank you bro
standing desk is a good idea
easy exercise two times per week and there is no problem
I think we found a hidden gem fellas!
💯😆
This series is one of the best on UA-cam. I feel like i should have paid for this information and visuals. Hope to see more soon!
Before the pandemic, I didn't know anything about recording, editing and mixing... A couple of months later, after watching your 100 presonus studio one tutorials and your mix together, I'm able to hear and fix some stuff I've never heard before. Keep on doing such a great job it's so helpful for people like me. A big thanks!!
Videos like this one teach in a couple of minutes what it may take lots of us years to realize and actually comprehend when learning what it is to mix, great work.
Rule #4 is so true yet often overlooked!
As a beginner it seems daunting with all the options one can use to mix a song. Box 1 and box 4 seemed logical to me before watching your video; but not box 2 & 3. Thanks for your help!
I agree with Number 2 COMPLETELY!!!! Static Mix is a must!
I think that a reasonable exception to the "zero plugins" rule is phase plugins or button. It can make a massive difference for drums.
Yup. In Studio One there's a polarity button on the channel so I can do that without technically using a plugin. ;) - Joe Gilder
That last rule was legit. Thanks a lot joe!
grateful painting
Great stuff, thank you! As someone starting recording in a DAW at 57, your advice is priceless. “Fly Me to the Moon”? You’re no “spring chicken” yourself 😉
Another great video again Joe!
One of the best tutorials on basics of mixing! Thanks!
Thx joe!
Nicely done Joe
I really needed this..
HEART HEART SIR JOE..THANK YOU
Thanks a ton for making these videos 🙌🏻💯
That's Huge!
Great job!
Thank you so much!
Love your channel man. Keep up the great work.
Great content man. Very grateful.
I love your training approach, thank you Joe!!
Thanks for video. Totally agree, you gotta get that balance right from the start. I enjoy getting my mix buss going after. that. I like The Slate Tape plugin and Virtual console with a little EQ and Mixbuss compression. Once I get that right then I start mixing my individual tracks.
Thank you so much!!
Great advice, thank you!
Great video man! Always learning from you! :D You the man!! Thank you 🙏
This was great thank you for sharing
Bro, this channel is such a great help. Thank you
Mate,you’re the light!

So amazing thank you for this I had no idea👏🏽🤙🏾
These rules, like you others in this series, are very good. Well done.
Thanks for making this available to all Studio One enthusiasts ;)
Favorite videos to watch
Thanks Joe... Cool explanation.
Absolutely great videos. Clear simple breakdowns. I love them
Really nice advises! Thanks a lot!
You make everything seems so easy and you really know what you talkin about. I love your lessons!
Thank you for making the most simplest transparent video! Great stuff ma man!
very simple to understand # BIG UP JOE
Love using the mixtool for this
Great vids man! You’ve made it very simple to understand
This is outstanding advice.
Tks joe!
Thank You
Joe man,i love u man. Keep up the good work i learn a lot.
So helpful as always Joe - love how you break these down and get us focused on the basics. Cheers. (And this format is so engaging - love these vids)
I love you Joe! Btw, great music on Apple Music.
Your videos are a godsend for ppl who want to start mixing. I’ve even been taking notes over them! Keep up the amazing content.
Your videos are so great! I learn so much from you and I actually feel like I'm progressing after each one of these lessons :) keep it up because we all need this
I am so happy to have found your channel. Your comedic timing is impeccable and logic is very helpful. A+ material
Great presentation. Thanks. That static mix in the beginning is so important.
I frigging love this. With all that's going on, I'm mixing the worship sessions of our church before broadcasting and I've had to record drums with 6 mikes, but directly to stereo because I just don't have enough channels. It has been a challenge because I don't have as much control over the drums post recording, but I've learned so much as it has forced me to nail the tracking part really well and invest time at the miking and tracking so that I can work on the mix with, essentially, a drum bus. So that step of working on things as a bus definitely adds up. This makes so much sense. Thank you!
This is probably one of the most useful UA-cam channel I ever found. Good job!!!
I am really new to this topic and im already loving it..the way you explained! marvellous thanks a lot Joe!
This is basically my 3 years progress in one video. You killed it. I'm totally agree with you. And thanks for making this video.
Thank you Joe. This video opened up so many things in my mind that I was doing wrong
God! This is the best thing I've heard about mixing on the internet.... You're a gem man!
Nice drawings Joe!
These rules videos are so good Joe! It's all laid out dead simple - great job! You should make these into posters so we can stick it on the wall next to our desks!
Thank you.
Wauw! Like your pedagogical frequencies
You are 100 % right.... I try to apply it for myself
I have a problem with waiting on the plugins. I know how I want something to sound, and I just get very impatient. I'm like "I have to put that NEAT reverb on & see how cool it sounds." LOL!
Yeah that’s fine, anyone who tells you that they have all rules and you have to follow them is full of it.
In much the same way, I can't balance the mix until the sounds themselves are balanced frequency-wise.
Im loving this new "Rules" series that you got going on. Also do you edit your own videos? cuz you stepped it up a notch
Thank you. It gives us the bigger picture. 👍
Just subbed, really appreciate your videos!
Good pratical Information and theory, thanks for sharing !
great video. perfect blend of being entertaining and educational.
Awesome videos, only seen these rule videos so far but very useful for newbies like me. High quality presentation and all, bruv. Thank you
The 4th rule was really an incredible one 😍😍👌
Great Video, especially #3 just learned that technique from G-Rex and Hekler putting compressors, etc. on channels for sends instead of individual channels
Wah..great 👍
i did a mix after watching this video and it helped so much, thank you!
Oh MAN... SO GOOD. Subscribed (Came here after the compression rules and it's so amazing how much you simplify this stuff)...Gotta know the rules to break them
After two years of mixing and mastering my own tracks and now watching this, your videos has really helped make sense to me why a lot of my tracks feel over-processed and squashed, and it's definitely because I didn't get these foundations right from the VERY beginning. Your method is truly the epitome of the "less is more" concept, and although it feels so opposing to my natural habits of JUST SLAPPING PLUGINS CAUSE IT FEELS GOOD, this method really does make sense and it really begs me to question why I am doing what I'm doing, and is it really the best way to achieve what I want. Thank you again! Binge watching all your stuff and its all slowly coming together for me, can't wait to apply these methods on the next track I'm mixing! Cheers!
Amazing video Joe - Just mixed a song with 47 tracks - spent time on the static mix - bus compression and EQ - amazing. (And a few Ben Holmes tricks!!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Sir u r great teacher I salute u u honestly explained everything. I love this
Man, your videos are so so so helpfull! Thank you a lot!
PS: It would be suuuper nice if you do a Rule Video of mastering!
Very helpful summary. You're right. The boxes do help. I have my own mini boxes myself but I think you've nailed the big ones. I was surprised with Box 4. I've always used this but I never realized it till you actually put it on this video. It was an a-ha moment for me. Thank you! You're a great teacher!
I've basically been trying to throw everything I thought I knew about mixing in the trash because I'm never thrilled with my mixes. I watched a 5 part youtube series on mixing from scratch on the RecordingRevolutions channel and I followed it for a new song I was mixing and the results were drastically better. I stumbled across your page today and watched the 3 rules of EQ and 6 rules of compression videos and they made a lot of sense. One thing I noticed about myself is when I get a mix to a place I think is good, I think i'm done and then I find myself tweaing/changing things for the next 2-4 weeks. It feels like an endless rabbit hole I put myself down, I would love to be able to get a mix where it needs to be and be able to walk away from it without constantly hearing things I think need to be tweaked.
Thank you so much dude, i feel my life will change soon
I think I may finally be getting it, cause I found myself yelling "balance" and "no plug-ins" before it popped up. Your knowledge and presentation styles has been the biggest help for my music, Mr. G, and for that I thank you.
So, I was looking around on YT for advice on Mixing. The top page opens with "Top 10 ways I mix" and so on and so on. Then I see your "4 Rules of Mixing" and I think to myself "How good can it be?". One way to find out is to Do It. So, I will. Thx.
Very helpful
Joe The GREAT✊🇳🇬🇳🇬
Again: thx a lot!
Good looking
As a complete convert to the Gilder method for a few years I can honestly say this video knocks it out of the park in showing how it should be done. Fantastic information, in an easy to follow video. What more could you ask for?
For rule number 4, I start dancing for an hour and playing the track on repeat. After an hour I just sit down and go like: Sigh... This sucks
Totally! "How stay emotionally detached when needed" might be a great video, if there actually were ways to teach that. Listening to your tracks repeatedly and falling in love with mistakes, "this isn't fucked, it is charming and sounds handmade"; getting lost in presets, having sticky stereotypes, "Would Thom Yorke like this kind of analogue?"; and not being able to finish it, "It's okay but something is missing"... calling it quits, being "kinda okay with it", then after something less than 2 years being embarrassed, "I could do this so much better now, but that would be boring" and deleting it from your Soundcloud.
Oh the joys of making music!
