As a Jewish viewer, I'll quickly explain dreidel to anyone wondering. Those names and symbols are four Hebrew letters (and their pronunciation): an anagram of "Nes gadol hayah sham," or, "a miracle took place here," in reference to the Hanukkah story. Grab a butt load of chocolate coins and spin the dreidel: I remember the rules as an anagram: Nun is "none", you get nothing. Gimel is "get", you get all the coins in the pot. Hei is "half", you get half the pot. Shin is "share", you give a coin to the pot.
You forgot the word "gadol" (which means "big" or "great") in the translation. Also, "sham" is "there". in the Israeli version the Shin is replaced with a Pey, which means "here." So the translation is: "A great miracle took place there."
As a person who spend a considerable amount of his professional worklife programming sound chips for a somewhat well known toy company, I am surprised that they didn't programme in a hold function so that it plays a part of the song instead of just WILLYOUSTOPPRESSINGTHATSODDINGBUTTONYOUAREDRIVINGMENUTS letting it stop every time the switch is interrupted. Motion switches are very intermittend so no matter how you play with it, it will only get through maybe a couple of seconds before restarting. I would have made it so that it only stops if the motion switch have been off for a couple of seconds, which means that as long as there is motion going on it will play without interruptions.
Loved this video, thanks for making and sharing it! Congratulations on pronouncing the names of the letters correctly (at least as far as us North Americans are concerned). I was taught that one letter on the dreidel is different in Israel. Those 4 letters stand for “a Great Miracle Happened There,” but in Israel it is “… Here.”
Not jewish either, but my kids did something with this at school and the craft they made has been hanging on my wall for a few weeks. Gimel - take all Nun - Take none Hay - take half Shin - put one in
The designers said using a heavy speaker would eliminate the need for ballast weight. In reality, they just wanted us to feel the sick bass drop. This could be made into a bit of a meme along the lines of Jack Black's Sax-A-Boom.
what a clever little design for something seemingly so frivolous and bink bonkity. I always really liked those clear blue plastics too. My favorite is that clear pink plastic thats similar to that blue.
The speaker and how it was done was clever and showed some care in the design even though they were going for a low price. The entire box works as a speaker box in sort of an "air suspension speaker" mode since it isn't vented at the back side of speaker other than the small hole for the battery strip. I suspect they do differential PWM directly to the speaker and rely on it to do the "integration" instead of having an LC filter. With a dynamic speaker that will work because for most of those the high frequency impedance is high so you don't end up with a lot of power going into the out of band high frequencies. *********************** Merry whatever you do this time of year to all.
Fran, you had too much fun with that lovely ASMR plastic on plastic crime. I wonder if we all come with a chip with the dreidel song burnt in. I couldn't get past the long section of pressing the button for a second so I don't know if you got a good look at the spin sensor. I'm pretty sure it is the same as one I got out of my hula hoop that turns on a bunch of sparkly LEDs. If I remember correctly, the only relevant mass is the self weight of the spring, which bends over from the force of accelerating and makes contact with a stiff wire centered inside the spring lengthwise.
I have a collection of musical dreidels, some of them have a manual switch and some a centrifugal switch. My favourite one has an interesting "extra". besides the LEDs and music, it's got a Frickin' LASER BEAM that is totally undisclosed on the packaging. It is aimed to create striking a bright red circle around the spinning top. I imagine the rules around even
As I learned from Leonard Nimoy in "I am Spock", Shin is the first letter of the word Shadai, meaning god, and his peaking as a child during a ritual in his synagogue, saw the rabbi with arms outstretched with his fingers splayed out, which inspired the Vulcan Salute with its 3 points. 🙂
I think blobbed is still cheaper but not by much so if you are making less than a zillion of something the SMD will be the way to go. These days, you can also get a micro-processor factory programmed for less than a custom chip if your volumes are not zillions. The micro looks a lot like a PIC micro controller with almost no RAM and some instructions missing. They are so cheap, I expect that in some cases where they needed more done, they would just put two of them in there.
Dreidel dreidel dreidel, Made on a 3D printer. Dreidel dreidel dreidel, Goes beep beep beep all winter. Seriously though it would be badass if you put a Bluetooth receiver in there and made it into a tiny guitar amp!
This one was molded but you could likely 3D print with clear stuff and get quite a nice look. If you want to be extra fancy, you can do a tune with some harmony in the manner people did years ago on a PC speaker. The basic idea is that you can only feed a 1 or 0 to the speaker but if you take two notes, and work out a sort of average frequency and a difference frequency, by pulsing the average at the difference rate, you get something that sounds almost like two notes if you take the right drugs and have lost your hearing.
@@mal2ksc I was referring to a not fast enough trick that was used on PCs of days gone by. On some machines getting the pulses to be fast enough to be out of hearing couldn't be done so tricks were used to make the artifact sound like you meant to do that. Many-many years ago I designed and built my own class-D amplifier. It worked amazingly well. This was back when VMOS was a new idea. The switching elements were BJTs with Baker clamps on them so they would turn back off in less than a day.
@@mal2ksc For context: I have been doing electronics for a while. The first schematic for a transistor hifi power amplifier I ever saw was for a class D one. Early on, the transistors were not able to do much in the way of power so it had to be class D. I did make some AB power(ish) amplifiers. Transistor radios were on the market but they sounded really bad. They used two transistors in a transformer coupled push pull circuit that I suspect was closer to class C. Advances happened fast
7:50 hahaha but either way you're not gonna get me this time especially not after ..... 3:30 yeah my eardrums are already blown out anything is better than that. You're right it was extremely annoying and I'm not annoyed very easily! 11:00 again must I a repeat myself! 3:30. That whole dreidel seems like it's off-balance.
You forgot to line up the battery stick slot 😊
Keen eye! Yes I did - but when I put it away I rectified that. Full Bridge Rectified!

The song in the other one is called "Lambada", it was very popular here in Europe in my youth back in the 80's or 90's if i remember correctly.
The name of the tune is "lambada". It was very popular in Brazil and South Europe
Somewhat popular in the Netherlands too due to some of the lyrics being misheard.
@@foorje Same in Italy. "Un momento che fica no ha" :D
Didn't Shakira do a version/cover of this song at some stage?
Also in Germany for some reason, haha.
@@simonilett998 You are probably thinking of the Jennifer Lopez song that sampled the melody a while back.

Oh wow. Seeing that pink top brought back a memory I forgot I had. We had that exact one when I was a kid back in the 90’s. Same shrill song.
Should have set the little stem into a hand drill and let er rip! LOL
Nah, bung it in a Dremel and have it spinweld.
@ lol. Goin for that extra high rpm.

Hi Fran. A very Merry Christmas! I hope you have a great holiday season.
P.S. Apparently, the dreidel song is in the public domain.
Song, yes - renditions would be a different matter. But this one cleared the hurtles.
Small children would be excited that they're able to read the lyrics and it'd reinforce their reading skills
... doubly so if the parents acted impressed
Do some guitar pedal videos fran from your collection!!! Love to see that

on STS-61 mission, space shuttle Endeavor, specialist Jeffrey Hoffman demonstrated a dreidel during Hanukkah in 1993. just sayin..
How to annoying friends and piss off enemies
4:12 It is kind of Brazilian lambada, watch?v=uBnnTyeAOL8
Someone is gonna sample and loop that right from your video.
A remix could do it all day

Red laser pointers that double as a flashlight cost $1.25 at Dollar Tree. I wasn't carded, but that doesn't mean they are or aren't age restricted.
Moving fingers in wrong direction is the reason of fail to spin it nicely. 😎
If you use compressed air you can get that thing spinning like mad.
Tis remix season.
I hear that song as a default sound when I work on some claw machines

I wondering if the epoxied blob on a PCB is not any cheaper than simply using a surface mount chip these days?

I know the lyrics because of Trey Parker's little cartoon.
O deo, o deo*... That was enjoyingly annoyingly fun 😂
*that's how it sounded to me...
Well no wonder it keeps flopping over... The innards of that thing don't look to be very well balanced. >_
Centre of gravity is off. My plain wooden ones spinnned well. They never told me how the game works, though I know the alphabet.
You mismatched the slot for the battery separating pull-tab. The part with the plunger should have been rotated 180 degrees from how you put it back.
