I really can't pin down the mood of this song... i heard this acoustic version first and it made me sad, but the album version is really upbeat, but then when i saw her live she introduced this song by talking about marriage and a really sweet video plays in the background... so then i go to listen to the lyrics a little closer and I'm like "nope this still makes me sad" but i realized that the prechourus could either refer to the moment you fall IN love OR the moment you fall OUT OF love... anyways I'm gay and confused and only some of it is due to this song
Maggie B I think the point of it is that relationships are never only good, sometimes they’re hard. How you choose to respond “when the gold is gone” determines whether the song is sad or happy. If you keep choosing your partner over and over again, even when things aren’t easy and when things aren’t fresh and new and shiny anymore, that’s what really matters.
She said the song is about how she felt like gay people really mean it when they get married because it isn't something they usually grow up thinking is expected of them and how when she was a child gay marriage wasn't even an option. It's a beautiful song and message.
This is exactly my how my previous relationship was-a roller coaster of emotions.

You have no idea how much a person voice can put such a positive impact on someone, just hearing Trixies voice is escaping from all the problems, the heartache. Trixie isn’t just a character, Brian is a genuine, heartwarming person who gives people a will to keep on going, to keep fighting and that applies to Trixie. I hope Trixie never changes, without her many people would not be here, Trixie doesn’t even realise how many people she has saved. We love you Trix.

To have someone like her really keeps us alive, Trixie keeps our souls alive. I have no idea how I found her but if I wouldn’t have found her I probably wouldn’t be here today. She doesn’t even realise, she has saved so many poor suffering souls. I have gone through many experiences that I don’t think I would’ve been able to cope with if I didn’t have her. I would’ve ended up suffering in silence, not be able to get up in the morning, never feel a connection and relate to people, ever. But thanks to Trixie, she gave me a light to hold, she gave me the confidence, the thick skin, the good self image and the connection I never had. People have their lives a lot harder than me, but no matter what people’s situation is, many struggle terribly. So badly that you want to die, you want to cut off from the rest of the world, but just hearing this persons voice stops me. I don’t even think like that anymore, thanks to you my mind is different, I feel like a new person. If you can do it through a screen you’re darn well good Trixie. It’s not even Trixie that we love, just Brian himself. He gives us so much joy and laughter, he’s likes our best friend but we just haven’t met. It’s amazing, people like Trixie keep peoples sad souls alive. This song helps me the most, whenever I feel pain, I listen to this.
