The biggest issue with the new Ford Bronco are the tie rods. The good thing is, Fabtech Motorsports just came out with a replacement kit and I got to test it out at the Bronco Super Celebration! After watching this video, do you think it was worth the purchase?

Great video as always. Looks like you all had some fun on the trail day!
Cool, Fabtech! for designing this fix! Aircraft type rod ends and beefed up rods! the same set up I run on my rock crawler for years now! Thanks Mitch for making this video!
Hey 6'3, found your stuff today. Your delivery, presentation and communication is awesome. Love the videos, take care
Thank you so much for the kind words! 👊🏻 🤘🏻
Like other people have said, this could very well be an intended failure point in the tie rod to prevent damage to more expensive components. While yes, this part is stronger and more reliable off road, you have more than likely just shifted the failure point from the intended tie rod, over to the factory steering rack. If you struggle to trust the capability of the factory tie rod, why not extend that distrust over the entire steering system. I'd rather upgrade and replace once and be done with it. Either way, thank you for bringing attention to this for people still waiting on their Broncos and those who intend to do some more intense off-roading with these vehicles
This was really fun to watch!
Keep up the good work guys! I was under the impression that tie rods were breaking only when rock crawling or if it was modified heavily, but guess not! I'm sure ford knows and will update this easily.
Thanks for the great video as always.
I saw another video about this issue that says that the tie-rod problem is primarily with non-sasquatch broncos with after market lift kits. and no so much an issue with the standard issue set-up, or with the sasquatch package because the tie rods are different for the sasquatch, and for the standard build, they're designed for the forces being applied at the factory angles. Using standard tie rods with a lifted set-up changes the angle of the forces and puts undue stress on the rod in places it wasn't supposed to be focused.
As for the narrow part of the rod you pointed out, the forces there should be primarily compression and tension forces, and the bending moments are actually highest more towards the middle of the rod. Add to the higher bending the fact that the threads are natural stress risers, and you have a recipe for bending stress failures at the point where the threads meet the threaded hole in the other half of the rod.
I point this out in the hopes that people don't start going out buying expensive kits when they don't need them, but DO get them when they are needed (i.e. after-market lift kits). Actually, these lift kits should start including new rods as part of the kit, imo.
here's the video I referred to (it also offers a simpler and probably cheaper fix for your viewers): ua-cam.com/video/duei4LE93sw/v-deo.html

Getting in on those Fabtech tie rods Mitchell!!!
hi guys i appreciate the transparency from you guys. have you heard about the dropped valve issue that is causing massive engine failure? do you happen to know what ford is doing about it? can we expect the fix to be legitimate considering all the supply chain issues?
Oh man that looks so fun.
wish I had a bronco (and a factory tie rod to break)..., ordered second week...FORD crickets...
You needed to show us the Fabtech tie rod before you installed it for comparison to the stock tie rod. Not sure if it is beefer in the weak points of the stock tie rod.
Definitely more beefed up they have side by side photos on their site and it's slightly longer
...amd ford should replace this with Fabtech.
You shoulda had buttercup test drive it. Cause, you know, she’ll send it.

Really appreciate you bringing awareness to this issue.
As of 2005 when I retired the mfr's weren't taking or testing turning tierod loads. They were taking combined load suspension loads and applying them to their mts testing machines. This may have changed. However given the splayed front end on vehicles being towed I think not. However in my day we took the turning loads and applied to our corner and component tests. This also gave us a better picture of all steering component durability and reliability. Previous comment on using the tierod as the fusible link is correct. I wound personally like to see it bend rather than break, however. Best wishes.
I'd like to know what the percentage of breakages are on modified suspension Bronco's versus stock unmolested vehicles. I bet you'll find most are on those that have had aftermarket lifts that change the geometry causing the issue.
The fact that they made the steering upgrade and 3.0 hoss only available on wildtrak is dumb
Great video. What bumper is on your Bronco? I really like the way it looks. I have a 2021 4 dr in Iconic Silver and think that would look good on mine!
The H3 had the same problem, I towed one after both sides failed for several miles, off road behind my Land Rover Defender. Got him back to a real road and he called onstar for a tow.
Ok, the next weak point is the rack and pinion. The Raptor did get a up grade on both. At least that what I hear listening from a few on utube that do heavy trails rides.
Can you share the link to the door handles on Amazon?
Those tie rods look exactly like the ones on my Geo Metro!! That’s quality.
Is the steering rack next???
do you know if the tie rods are quenched?
The bolts coming off the bottoms of the A-arms are also a no-go.
I have a question for you and I really need your help , I have 2019 raptor, right I don’t have problem but I know cam phaser are a problem, my question is , after ford change it ( recall ) for how long can you go , in miles until you have the same problem , and thank you for your videos ,very informative
What color is that/ is it after market?
It's a suv , if you want it to hold up put a solid 60 in it.
The link doesn't seem to be working. I want to buy, please update the link
The tie rods breaking is only in lifted broncos from what I have see. But if you beef up the tierods , then the tierods wont break, but then the steering rack breaks, Broncbuster has a fix for that as well as there tie rod fix, by adding a bushing to the drivers side of the rack where it breaks. 90% of bronco users will not lift their rig and also wont off-road their rigs more than a rough dirt trail .. it wont be an issue for them.. for the 10% that are going to do serious off-roading and lift their rigs.. Yeah upgrade your rack and the tie rods. Breaking stuff and upgrading it is part of off-roading.
Booyah 👊🏽😁🇺🇸, fixing it for serious off roading. No parking pimping.
As soon as you over angle that heim joint it will snap. Like on lifted rigs.
Not having it double shear seems to be an oversight. There is more leverage on the joint which might induce bending. But I'm certainly not an expert.
FACTS
The Bronco is good for driving to the trails, but I would never trust the suspension to do anything to difficult,to many weak spots.
Been looking to buy and dealers here are asking way above on pricing even used ones!

The build quality is great, but how long will the outer Rod end hold up? Most importantly with pivotal up and down movements on rocks? Does this set up make the outer nuckles a weaker point? Heim joints and rod ends are great when connected to a steel frame with a solid bolt holding it together. The outer rod end is good until you get dirt and sand in the joints. I believe the an upgraded outer ball joint would be better for the mall crawling folks. I just hope the outer nuckle and rod end hold up long term for us who beat on their broncos.
That outer rod will last forever. Late model dirt race cars have been running these for 25 years.
The inner & outer rod ends are made for us by FK Rod Ends. In our opinion they are the best in the business, and have been around for a long time. Also, the clevis that bolts to the rack and the stud that go through the knuckle are heat treated for extra strength. We will be offering a heavy duty tie rod set similar to our offerings for the GM model trucks in the near future. Check out part number FTS71002 to see what those look like.
@@FabtechMotorsports appreciate the feedback!
I've seen from other youtubers, once you strengthen the tie rod, the rack becomes the breaking point.
This issue is caused by changing the geometry with lift kits and larger heavier wheels and tires. Nothing wrong with these upgrades just know that you’re going to have to reinforce the suspension. It’s a no-brainer👍🏽👍🏽
Seems to me like that should be a safety recall.
It’ll never happen. No danger if you don’t modify and off-road the vehicle. Ford will argue damage occurred outside the scope of normal driving and configuration.
@@colby78hurley Then they shouldn't show stock Broncos doing crazy things in their ads.
Exactly. why is it up to the consumer to spend extra money to fix their problem
So where is the weak link now? steering box?
The weak link has always been the nut behind the wheel.
They do know their buyers and this is what you do as a good groupie.
The Red neck no sleeves tee was great ya'll got to get a FORD
Maybe Ford could address the $30k markups at the dealership?
The tie rod issue is huge I’ve known guys who have gone threw 6 pairs in a year. I’ve seen aftermarket guys coming out with these sleeves you put over them to help. Cheap alternative option
Tie rod weakness is certainly an issue. But the production Bronco hasn’t even been out for a year.
@@j.l.5966 pretty sure they were being rolled out in march of last year. Either way he’s only a month or 2 away from having it for a year so that’s almost a tie rod a month
@@gwood69 reservations were being converted to orders in March. The first production bronco went to its first customer on June 30, then started trickling out in July. The first tire rod issue happened in October. Highly doubt there are guys going through a pair a month. Why even take it off road if it fails that often.
@@j.l.5966 the dude has a UA-cam channel I can’t remember the name for the life of me but he’s documented it all very well. In fact I think he’s the guy who created the sleeve/brace for them
Ford offers a heavy duty steering system on the MY22 broncos. The Wildtrak has it by default.
Which is BS. Why not available on all models?
Not by default, it's an upgrade.
@@jmo0311 only on wildtrack
@@jmo0311 for MY22, the Wildtrak has the HOSS 2.0 upgrade by default, which is an improvement over the MY21 models. And for those who haven’t had a build date yet, they can upgrade to the 3.0 version that comes with the Bronco Raptor. But that pushes their build to MY23.
@@micahrichey5335 I know. He was referring to Wildtrak having it by default. It doesn't it's an upgrade.
Ford sized rocks, nice
I'd rather break a tie rod than a more expensive and harder to replacing steering/suspension component. Could be that it was designed to break earlier rather than pass that force along to more - expensive and harder to replace components.
I’d rather not break anything, the videos I’ve seen of tie rods breaking, aren’t really pushing their broncos to their limit
Yeah, off-road vehicles have cheap weak spots built in traditionally so as not to destroy expensive components… I don’t know if this is that or if Ford has just been out of the off road game for so long they screwed up and designed in a flaw, time will tell.
Im pretty sure it was like that so it can get good safety ratings for crashes, with the tie rods being stronger you might end up with a wheel in your lap or start running cars over
@@jonahfastre Exactly, Stay ready so you don't have to get ready for another break on the trail. The real crawling folks will get this and the Bronc braces with polymer bushing. Run 37s, 38s, even 39s and 40s. Do it once and not worry about that again. Your next upgrades will be a FDU, and dana 60 in the rear with long travel suspension. Unless it's a DD then I can understand.
@@sixpest You're correct! I believe it's illegal to run rod end nuckles and heim joint steering in some states.
You had trouble in the mud because you need a more aggressively treaded tire. I run Copper SST Pro’s
My Badlands is on the verge of being a Lemon. Still in the shop right now. Dealer has had it over for a week now, for the 3rd time with the same issue. 1 more and it’s 🍋.

@@RAM-KINGOFTRUCKS Weird, because l the other 3 Fords I currently own right now are perfect. And I sold my ‘17 Ram Megacab Cummins 4x4 Laramie to buy the Bronco. Talk about a pile of crap. The Ram was horrible. And I’m a Ram Cummins fan. Had my 1st Ram Cummins almost 16 years before buying the ‘17. We had so many issues with the ‘17. She left us stranded many times, even while towing 7hrs from home. Never again.
What’s the issue?
@@Southpaw11 The battery dies every couple of days. There’s a short somewhere that is draining the battery. Happens every few days. You can drive it all day. Turn it on and off. Zero issues because the alternator charges the battery. But when you turn it off for about 10-12 hours (like parking it all night) it’s dead. But it doesn’t happen every night. Usually 2-3 times a week. We literally drive around with jumper cables in the back of our 5 month one $60j vehicle. To have to think about how we park everywhere we go so we can access the battery if we need to the following day. It’s sucks. The dealer has tried every test Ford has suggested and can’t find the what the problem is. We’re currently on our 3rd battery in 5 months. And as of right now, it’s been at dealer 8 days on this currently trip. As of yesterday, when they updated me, they still can’t find where the parasitic draw is. Even though it’s dying on them as well. So they can definitely duplicate the problem. But can’t find where the short is. In Arizona they have 4 chances to try and fix it and/or a total of 30 days at the dealer before it’s considered a lemon. Currently we are on our 3rd trip to the dealer for a total of 19 days. At which point they buy it back from us, including all fees, taxes, etc. or they replace it for an identical vehicle.
We’ve already started discussing it being a lemon and if it does go that way, I’d like to get a replacement, or, if they can, find me a Braptor and I’ll pay they difference. If neither can be done, I’ll have them buy it out from under me and I’ll go buy and a Audi E-Tron GT. I’m not in love with the Bronco. It’s definitely fun and we enjoy it. But it’s not worth $60k, which is disappointing. I’d do a Braptor though.
@@OMG_No_Way good for you..my last 19 ford lasted 5k ..never had that with Ram..
welcome to FORD Life, .. fix or repair daily , b/c Ford stands by their modo =P , the next weak point is the internal parts in the rack !! what is cheaper to break?
I like the idea of using a beefier tie rod, I just don’t like that Ford decided this was a good spot to shave some 💲 on the manufacturing costs.
Ford didn't design the Bronco to be run 37's and 40's on a midsized SUV, and if they do they can pay for modifications and repairs.
@@matthewmeaux3450, you are right, Ford build an off-road vehicle with no expectation that people would install bigger tires and lifts. Maybe that was a little short sided on Ford's part.
Just out of curiosity. Does Ford use the same tie rods on both sasquatch and non sasquatch broncos?
Wildtrak has them from the raptor

U make the boot 1/2 1 part, & the back 1/2 screen /thread into the boot end. BUT there is more the prt that threads in has slitter tuning end. Then a 3rd end which is NOW two bars that a top & bottom tie rod end double donuts 1 sitting over the other 1 both hving joints but joints can be same idea but different design, so if 1 super joint fails the other still ok. Then u just slide a sleeve over both ends so When 1 fails not dangling it.
Only took 15 secs, to figure that out. took 5 mins to type so gives Me extra think time to get it right. Even I could trail repair these & I am NO mechanic bakward lug nuts God. U will quickly find out whos design for super joints is no holds the best after few yrs testing/thrashing. Either top bone or bottom bone installd spot the joint end is not as good. You need a tall end to slip both tie rods on to 2 donuts w/a thin spacer.

The guy says this is the right way (same guy gets at cost price parts or promotion on channel then writes off all cost for business on tax day) I will stick with what seems to work, you know that part you dissed.
Yes. Fabtech sent me these tie rods at no charge. I have nothing to hide. A lot of companies offer parts for free. I only run a part if I like it.
Side note, after seeing the BroncBuster Brace (after this video was made)… I really like that option as well. We are even considering selling those parts! That is a great option for someone looking for a lower cost “brace”. I like the Fabtech a little better because it is a replacement. But it is more expensive. There are pros and cons to both setups.

It will be two years this summer since I reserved\ordered a Bronco. I have had a F150 on order since last November. I think I will go order the lightning so I will have three vehicles Ford can't deliver. They sure like to promote what they can't deliver.
I have a July 2020 Bronco reservation and still haven't heard when it might get built . I have a Lightning res within the first 2 minutes of its reveal and did not even get an invitation to order for this year !
I gave up on my Day 1 Bronco reservation last October when the news of the hardtop issue came out. Having owned a Jeep with a soft top, I wanted no part of cold in the winter, hot in the summer, and not secure 365 days a year. So I worked out a deal with my dealership and ordered a Raptor. After multiple build dates having come and gone, with the latest being April 8th moved back to the last week of May, I just bought a FX4 F150 loaded out. It’s not what I initially wanted, but I needed a new truck and had to move on. Still, I’ll always love that Bronco and the Raptor, as well.
😆 👌
RIP to the steering rack.
Well, I will just dump money in my 79 Bronco.
Realistically 97% of these bronco’s are never gonna leave the road. Even most of that “trail” was basically just a dirt road. If you are truly gonna build on off-road vehicle then get a solid axle and eliminate the entire problem.
Does the crazy man in the green bronco in front of you use original tie rods? 😆
That happens to be a crazy woman 😂 Check out her Bronco here: ua-cam.com/video/L5WLHTJfsBo/v-deo.html
Those tie rods look like their specifically designed to fail before a more important/expensive component hits its limit. A tie rod breaking is a pain, but it's a lot better than a broken steering rack or major suspension component. Most systems have a weaker components designed in for this reason.
