On October 27, 2021, HEC Paris and student association HEC Débats, will be receiving Matthieu Ricard, Buddhist monk, humanitarian, author and photographer, for the third HEC Talks, the Forum for Curiosity and Diversity.
Matthieu Ricard is a French buddhist monk, as well as an author, photographer and scientist. After completing his Ph.D. degree in cell genetics in 1972, he moved to the Himalayan region where he has been living for the past 45 years. As he witnessed the difficulties of the Tibetan populations, he initiated solidarity projects in both Tibet in Nepal in the 1980's.
The success of his first book, The Monk and the Philosopher, co written with his father Jean-François Revel, allows him to widen his humanitarian vision. Thus, in 2000, he founded his NGO Karuna-Shechen, which supports 400.000 people each year in the sectors of health, education, economic development, food security and environment.

As the years went by, Matthieu Ricard became a well-known figure world round, speaking in various events on the notion of altruism, which he believes to be the solution to most global challenges we face as well as the answer to inner happiness.
Today, he presents his memoires, "Carnets d'un moine errant", paying tribute to his spiritual buddhist masters who inspired his life.
