In India we have an implied way of spelling Indian words in roman alphabets. So the the a after first consonant will rhyme with duh and not day or dad. An English spelling would actually have to be surrie. Indian scripts have more that 10 vowels. So we have to assign them in our own way.

Is there a reason why 'saree' does not use the definite article 'a' ? I know, I know its a bit of a technical grammar question, just intrigued...
