    You know, the way Trunks handles Imperfect Cell in his own timeline sounds like it would actually be a pretty cool epilogue boss fight in an RPG. A boss from earlier in the game who gave you trouble at that point shows up at the end of the game, after you've defeated the main villain, only he still has the same stats as before. So now that your character has increased about 20 levels since last fighting him, you mop the floor with him, showcasing just how far you've come while playing the game!

    “In this volume, Son Goku dies. I don’t have that much sentiment for the characters I draw, but I feel a bit sad about the death of a character that I have been drawing for almost 10 years. I tried to think of other scenarios for the story, but Goku dying was the best one. I tried not to be too somber about it. But still….I’m sorry, Son Goku! Forgive me!”

      I can imagine some of his complaints. The period from Vegeta self-destructing up to the point where they fight Kid Buu on the Kai Planet feels like an overly long series of fake-outs, even if there's some good stuff in there like Hercule and Buu's friendship. Nothing really happens during that time period (aside from the growing death count, of course) except "Here's my new transformation! Oh wait, it didn't work." with the Z-Sword, Super Saiyan 3, Fusion Dance, Ultimate Gohan, Potara Fusion, etc. Basically Buu Tennis.

    • @ShadowMark474
      @ShadowMark474 4 роки тому +13

      @danieljliversLXXXIX Did you just recently start reading it or something? Everything you're complaining about has always been there, just in smaller amounts and dispersed over much longer periods. The Wano arc is bigger in scope than anything Oda has done before, and he very obviously wants to obfuscate the events as much as possible to keep the readers wondering and theorizing. This technique is only possible for him to utilize if he's already planned out everything to an extreme detail, and has a great knowledge of the timeline and what each character will do and what their motivations are, this is a hugely monumental undertaking and extremely ambitious, and you think this is somehow evidence of "laz[iness] and not thinking things out"? Just about every chapter recently has been creating new plot threads and setting up more questions to be answered, what you're essentially doing is complaining that the questions have no answers and the plot threads aren't resolved, before you've even given them a chance. I'm not defending the pacing necessarily, although I don't mind it because it's going at lightning fast speeds compared to some manga I've read, but your other criticisms are unwarranted, and honestly just sounds like whining due to impatience and entitlement.
      For me I haven't personally liked OP all that much since before the timeskip, but right now this is the most enjoyment I've gotten out of it in a long time. Ever since Enies Lobby, I've lost hope that the fights would ever return to being creative or interesting again, and haki solidified that, so the characters and world building is the only reason I'm continuing it. Wano is very strong in that aspect, and I'm excited for the Oden backstory coming up. Sucks that you're not enjoying it, but that doesn't make it bad.

    • @Ruldolphmaker
      @Ruldolphmaker 4 роки тому +14

      Your critique sucks.
      1: at no point do we use the word "lazy" unless you have a damn good example of a writer not doing something because be's being lazy
      2: off-panel events are for the anime's sake. Also they keep the focus of the arc in one place. of course being done off-panel doesn't mean they didn't happen or won't be elaborated on. Did we need to see the entirety of the Big Mom/ Kaido fight? No.
      3: Your claim "things lead to nowhere" is one of the most BS claims you make. Of course it's such a broad claim with no specifics it borders on fallacy. You cant say "X lead nowhere" in an incomplete story anyway.

    • @ShadowMark474
      @ShadowMark474 4 роки тому +5

      @@Ruldolphmaker by off-panel events, he meant things that happen that we don't get to see for obfuscation reasons, like Law being freed from prison etc.. And by "set ups that lead nowhere" he's referring to all of the new plot threads that get backburnered immediately. Personally I think both of these things are promising if resolved right, which I trust Oda enough to do given his history. Obviously his argument is illogical since as you said the arc's nowhere near done, but I want to make sure we're all on the same page and not arguing against straw men.

    Honestly, the whole "these androids are stronger than Freeza" thing doesn't bother me either, but what does is that like usual, Toriyama manages to go out of his way to make it not work essentially.You said that the justification is there, that their strength is dependent on the strength of the heroes, which would be a fair point. (And for Cell, it is) The problem is that Gero specifically skipped Namek. The difference in power is so massive, that if his genius can fill in the gap there, did he even NEED that data? It's funny that the justification given makes it less believable that this happened, if anything.

    • @Denzel_Greene
      @Denzel_Greene Рік тому

      Hella late to this comment, but it’s kinda explained that Gero learns of Namek, SSJ and Frieza when both Frieza and Goku return to earth. Gero had his drones following characters of interest that he knew of…so without Goku or one of the others confronting Frieza directly, he had no cause to waste a drone on an alien that just landed and fought a kid he knows nothing about. That’s why main timeline Gero knows nothing of SSJ or Namek whereas Cell’s timeline Gero was knowledgeable enough to craft it into Cell’s design. And while I’m sure it’s unintentional on Toriyama’s part, it explains why 17/18 are stronger in the main timeline and why 19 and 20 exist. He made 17 and 18 able to crush Goku several times over but made them way to strong to control because he lacked updated info on their exact levels, so he made himself and 19 bodies that more closely matched their last know power for better control as well as energy absorption to account for any gained strength but due to everyone taking 3 years to train his numbers were waaaay out of date. In the Cell/Trunks timelines, he knew exactly where Goku was in terms of strength and only made 17 and 18 as strong as necessary to beat him…but still too strong to control so he’s killed before he makes 19 and himself an Android.

  • @fran3ro
    @fran3ro 4 роки тому +99

    This arc lost a huge prism of possibilities the moment Gero died. He was the one with all the motivation and the instigator. I would have prefered for him to be killed by Cell rather than 17, or maybe even Gero sacrifice himself so Cell can achieve his goal or something.

    • @fran3ro
      @fran3ro 4 роки тому +13

      @Jack Lake I know all that, but that don't change my argument. Gero didn't need to be killed, just pass the focus from him to 16, 17 and 18 and maintain him as background. Then when Cell came to be (because boss meddling) retake him with Cell somehow.

    • @TheAzulmagia

      Same with Babidi to a degree.

    • @fran3ro
      @fran3ro 4 роки тому +15

      @@TheAzulmagia True, but the Buu arc is different (to me). Cell arc is about revenge (Gero's revenge), Buu arc is about power: Babidi wanting the power that came with controling Buu. His revenge against the kaio-shins was really a secondary trait, so once he obtained that power his character arc was completed and wasn't needed anymore in the story.

      You know I remember a game story in Supersonic warriors where Cell while waiting for the games to start
      Dr Gero appears (from nowhere with the reason he always have a plan), he gets surprised that cell managed to reach his form, then he orders him to conquest the world, obviously Cell refuses and they start a fight.
      Which ends with Dr Gero dying while being happy that his goal research has ended and Cell saying thanks to dr gero for giving him life.
      That made me think it'd improve Cell's character a bit if they could meet once.

I think it has some of the worst of “Super” Goku with him not taking a situation seriously and makes very dumb mistakes he will hardly get any comeuppance for especially him forgetting the important seal for the evil containment wave allowing Zamasu to become merged in the first place and being ultimately responsible for Trunks timelines destruction and he is never called out for that.
      Zamasu also drops the villain ball near the end to. Apparently despite the fact his goal is to be the one and only god of the multiverse, he did nothing to stop the one god that can stop him Zeno. Despite the fact that he had the Super Dragon balls multiple times and they are said to wish for anything with no limitations so for him to do nothing about Zeno makes him look like a complete idiot when all he had to do was wish away Zeno but he just destroys the SDBs got erased because of it.

    Taking such a nice and heartwarming character from practically the most innocent era of Dragon Ball and giving him a horrible death just for Gohan to become SSJ2 would have crushed my soul. (My mom used to read Dragon Ball back when it was in its Red Ribbon Arc, what would I be supposed to tell her?? )

      I think the point was that the character who was supposed to motivate Gohan into transforming, whether it be No. 16 or Hacchan, should have developed some relationship with Gohan besides them both loving peace. More importantly, I just think No. 16 should be more developed in general (but that involves a large amount of reworking the story as it is now).

    4:04- I mean it would have been cool if instead of just Dr Gero, a character introduced in Z as always being in Dragon Ball, but wasn’t actually created back then- instead of that, the Red Ribbon Army remnants sponsored Dr Gero. However, they’re not a bombastic, loud army, but a subtle, hiding in plain sight, non-threatening organization- maybe something pseudo-philanthropist as a delicious irony. Then Commander Black (if Tao Pai Pai can be brought back as a cyborg despite seemingly blown to smithereens why can’t anyone else) decide on this more subdued route, decide on hit and hide tactics with the re-cyborg upgraded army in addition to the main androids on the Z team. And since it’s a large organization that’s doing this, there will be a definite paranoia fear running during this time as to how is a Red Ribbon Army member or not, due to looking like everyone else till it’s too late. They might even support Cell until the latter screws them over and kills the lot of them for his own amusement.

      I like that idea, especially because it sounds a lot like the Dark Tournament arc of Yu Yu Hakusho. A secret organization of human assholes working in the shadows and sponsoring different bad guys to kill the heroes, only to get betrayed and slaughtered by the two main villains (essentially Gero and Cell in this imagined arc) at the end. And fittingly enough, Toguro and Cell have the same English voice actor.
      Hell, bring a souped up Tao Pai Pai back into the mix too. And maybe his brother, the Crane Hermit is part of the Red Ribbon Army remnants too, finally making good on his threat at the 23rd Budokai that he'd be back one day. Maybe General White is still alive and is the one who revealed Android 8's location so they could kidnap him and reprogram him as revenge for what 8 did to him.
      Ah, what could have been.

Cell has Freeza's DNA in him, and Im happy to let that be the explanation for Cell being born strong, since Freeza was too, and Im also happy to say that Gero was able to scavenge some technology at the same time he recovered Freeza's DNA. Im not happy to say that Earth, which is explicitly stated to be an underdeveloped backwater on the galactic stage, has the technology to build a fighter that puts freeza to shame in a galaxy where Freeza is absolutely dominant, without that technology coming from Freeza

    As i was seeing this video i really thought to myself about this arc.
    Your videos gave me a reason to think more about Dragon Ball's story, something i really didn't care that much before and seeing the Cell arc for me was the most interesting.
    Something that peaked my interest in particular was Cell himself, the reason is because... He's not interesting at all.
    At first he seems cool, he seems like a mysterious entity, a very different villain to the ones that came before... And then his backstory is exposed, no mystery, no nothing, his only objective becomes "i want to be perfect" and there's nothing more to it.
    I myself thought of ways to make Cell more interesting and an idea popped up in my head:
    What if Cell was Dr. Gero?
    Think of an alternate universe where during Cell's introduction he tells Piccolo some basic stuff about himself, he comes from even further into the future, he killed Trunks in his future and he wants to merge with the androids of this era, Cell is very vague in his wording during this part.
    When Krillin and Trunks enter Dr.Gero's lab is the point where what Cell IS finally gets revealed, Cell is an artificial body created by Dr.Gero using knowledge he gained from working with No. 17 & 18, Cell is the merged DNA of the strongest warriors the universe has ever seen BUT Dr. Gero lacked something, this is his first time making something entirely biological, he can recreate everything it needs to live but having learned this from 17 & 18, an actual human mind is MILES more efficient than anything he AI he can create, Cell needed the mind of somebody and Dr. Gero ended up with one idea, he himself went through the process of making himself an Android, this way he made his brain, his mind, into data, Cell was seen as a last step to his plan, once Cell was ready, Dr. Gero would upload himself into Cell, he would then use an altered version of Namekian genes to FUSE with Android 17 & 18, gaining an immense power update as a side effect.
    In Cell's timeline, much like in the main one, Dr. Gero was killed by 17 before he could do anything but this actually activated a plan B of sorts, if Dr. Gero was to be murdered, his mind would transfer immediately to his computer in his secret lab, there it could continue to try and merge with Cell once his body is complete.
    Dr. Gero being Cell alters Cell's personality a bit, he tends to make strategys, think before acting, his intellect helps him become a better fighter, he even makes plans on how to use techniques to it's most efficient (Maybe there's one scene where he uses the Kamehameha in a way none of the heroes knew before, or he points out weak points in some techniques he exploits to his own advantage, something like that)
    This also makes Cell be a little more personal when it comes to fighting Goku, to the point where he is furious when Goku leaves the battle and makes Gohan Cell's opponent.
    Seeing his incredible strength in his perfect form, Cell no longer believes even Goku can beat him, no matter how much he trains, so he challenges Goku and the rest to a tournament not just to test his own strength, this is one last insult to Goku, it's like saying "I'm so strong i can beat you at your own game", again, it is something more personal, which explains later on why Cell no longer cares about the tournament when Goku leaves, if it's not Goku then the tournament has no message, seeing it as pointless, he decides to stop playing around and just kill everyone.
    By the end of the arc, Cell has fully lost it, his blood thirst as he cannot believe the work of his life is being defeated has made him go berserk, no longer thinking straight, he decides on "fuck it, i'll destroy this planet with all of you in it, and i'll conquer another one, i can be the new Frieza if i want" using his full strength in his last Kamehameha, the beam struggle happens and when he dies, you can see on his face how he just doesn't want to accept this as reality, after all he did, after all his plans work, he still was beaten because he thought he was the perfect being, something that couldn't be surpassed, and yet, he still was surpassed by a mere child, for the second time.

    Early Krillin had a potential niche as a clever/trick fighter, with his fights against people like Chautzu and even Goku. In fact, I think the five-man band teased towards the end of the 22nd tournament had potential: you have Yamcha as a knowledge base / exposition machine (sorry...), Krillin as a trickster, Chautzu as a "weird" fighter, and then Goku and Tienshinhan in some combination of power and technique-based fighters. Probably you'd have Goku as the power fighter, focused on transformations and techniques for increasing his strength and speed, and Tienshinhan as the technique fighter, with abilities like his multi-arm thing, the solar flare, and such like, if you wanted to stick closer to the way the story wound up going.

    Honestly I think a good way to address the character bloat would just to have been limit the power divide and make teams of villains the norms. Some of the early movies did this but always just used the other characters as fodder. While an execution that would work I think would be Goku going in alone only to start getting his ass kicked cos he can't take on four or five people around as strong as his friends all at once, so they come in to take the load off while he and possibly his current rival/strongest ally fight the villain.

      @@devilskind92 I can't help but agree to be honest. Cell is more sick in everything that's not the actual story which is really unfortunate. Nothing but bad storytelling decisions made squarely to duct tape and glue the plot together and do things that only endeavor to ruin the lore and build up. The Room of Spirit and Time, Trunks' warning just not being heeded, Vegeta's *Everything* , Yamcha being thrown under the bus because Super Saiyans are more important than a character that has literally been there since before Master Roshi or Krillin. The world of Dragon Ball being assimilated to that of the real world.
      Literally all of the major developments just feel terrible for anyone who's been a fan since the start of Goku's journey on Mount Paozu. Real fans just get spat in the face the whole time. I have some *Big* problems with The Buu Saga too but at least there's the big payoff of Gohan growing up and then the story ending at another timeskip where Gohan has a kid which is very neat.

    17:40 That is exactly my goal with my Dragon Ball fan writing. I'm 700,000 words deep and am on Gohan's high school arc at the moment.
    The core team as of right now is:
    Goku: The most well balanced fighter, the only one with no real weaknesses to speak of in terms of actual martial arts. Has the best control of his Ki out of all of them.
    Tien: Has the single strongest attack in the group and is the most capable of finishing an engagement or turning the tide of the battle though it comes at the expense of his stamina ie: Tri-Beam.
    Krillin: Has the highest Ring IQ. If you follow boxing or professional fighting you know what this term means but for those who don't Ring IQ just means able to come up with higher level strategies on the fly and download the opponent's strengths and weaknesses more acutely. He is physically the weakest and can't deal out the same amount of damage as his friends, requiring more hits on the enemy.
    Piccolo: Has the best defence (both biologically ie: can tank the most hits, and martial arts wise, it's actually hard to take him down because his ears and antennae along with his Ki Sensing make it more difficult to land crucial blows against him.) He is the most easily fussed when it comes down to it and can be taunted by the enemy though he loathes to admit it.
    Yamcha: Has the best natural instincts but his real selling point is his speed, no one even comes close. He can't fly as fast as he can dash but his dashing speed is insane. He is the opposite of Piccolo, he has the weakest jaw by far of the team.
    Raditz: I have been very sparing in my use of Raditz but he is the strongest in terms of single hit strikes. Tien can deal more damage with The Tri-Beam but Raditz can punch and kick the hardest.
    And the final characters I will add to the team when their arcs come into focus are:
    Gohan: Will be the only one who can actually go Super Saiyan. (Super Saiyan is not readily available to Trunks, Goten, Goku, or Raditz. Trunks because he's not Vegeta's kid and the rest because they don't have enough active S-Cells. Gohan is truly one of a kind because he has more active S-Cells as a half-breed than Goku and Raditz do who are full Saiyan.)
    Videl: (I unfortunately don't know because there is no precedent set in the source material so Videl has to basically be built ground up from video game footage that I go look up and building on her character in the high school arc.)
    Goten: Goten and Trunks are students of Yamcha so all three of them will have a special move: The Wolf Pack Fist. Goten trains under Yamcha, Goku, Raditz, and Krillin.
    Trunks: Goten and Trunks are pretty much neck and neck in terms of prowess but Trunks learns martial arts from Yamcha, Piccolo, Tien, and Krillin. When they combine into Gotenks their finishing move is The Chimera Combination - Wolf, Demon, Saiyan, Crane, and Turtle.

    Wow, I'm surprised this ended up being #3 instead of #1. Despite the Buu arc being just as narratively all over the place as Cell, I see a lot of people giving it at least a partial free pass because of how wacky and creative it could be. And while I can definitely see where people are coming from with that, I don't think being wacky excuses the Buu arc's issues (and hell, it can actually BECOME an issue in of itself.) I'm interested in seeing how you'll tackle it.
    And I'd just like to say that this is a great series you've got going. I wish more people on UA-cam were willing to take as much of an analytical viewpoint on past Dragon Ball as you were. I might not always agree with what you say, but you always raise interesting points that sometimes not many other people ever really bring up. Looking forward to your Buu arc analysis!

    Future Trunks is my favorite character in the series.. He's like a tragic version of Gohan. He lost his father, he has his mother, he's half Saiyan and half Human and rides the line between fighter and desiring peace, but he DOESN'T have the luxury of choice that Gohan has after Cell. When he finally does meet his father their relationship is strained, volatile, and blooms subtly. Mid arc he even realizes his mission is futile when he finds out changing this past will not effect his future, and the only thing he can really change is himself. Seeing how different Trunks turns out when Vegeta is involved in raising him and in a world that's fate is not rested upon his shoulders is incredible. Not the biggest fan of Kid Trunks, but the difference between them is fascinating.

    THE CONCLUSION!! I’ve seen so many mixed feelings on the arc and rightfully so; never have I seen so many ppl say “it’s the best arc in DB!” and just as many say “it’s the worst arc in DB!” but I think I like it a BIT more than most, at least, a lot of its issues just don’t bother me...The only ones that rlly did was how the whole “let’s just wait for Gero to unleash the androids” thing played out and how a couple things went near the end like Goku staying dead but I said all that last vid. I don’t rlly mind the time travel plot holes or anything like that. And as much as I LOVE the Frieza Arc, I think this one kinda used (more of) the characters more effectively/gave them more memorable scenes. That counts for something, I think. Not to mention that Future Trunks is my favorite DB character besides Piccolo. Sure, Goku was shoved out quickly and everyone was waiting on him the whole time, but I don’t see it as a waste bc there was still a lot happening and being discovered while he was out unlike in other arcs where all that happens w/o Goku is the other fighters getting their asses handed to them. And when Goku WAS in the plot, I found it interesting enough. I think Gohan should’ve had a bigger role early on, but works as a 3rd act surprise. A lot of ppl find Mr. Satan annoying in this arc but I always thought he was funny even if he’s an asshole (for now), and his good side that’ll be developed in the next arc did shine through when he helped 16. I like all the androids, but again, think they probably all should’ve established sooner/whoever was gonna be the main villain should’ve been decided sooner. There are plenty of instances of “I’m making this up as I go along”, which I relate to, but unlike Toriyama, I don’t get paid for my laziness. All most ppl talk abt in this arc is the Cell stuff, especially the Cell Games, which I don’t rlly get...ok I kinda do, but then other cool stuff gets overlooked. The drama and unpredictability of the first half is pretty unmatched by any other part of the franchise, and the character dynamics worked pretty well. It rlly is a mixed bag, but I don’t think it was completely “bleh”. It had its saving graces
    I consider it a 6/10 arc, which is upper-tier ok. Almost good. I DEFINITELY think it’s better than the Buu Arc, but that’s just me...
    As always, looking forward to the next DBD, keep up the good work ^^

    Look at how Trunks fought.
    He didn't use long overly ornamental energy attacks.
    It was all martial arts sword fighting and only two energy attacks used. Once when he wanted a quick burst attack to get frieza into piosition to attack and a second one to finish off his body after he destroyed it.

The only reason they weren't were because of his editor. I believe whole heartedly that Trunks' sword wasn't a part of his design just to be cool, but that it would be an accessory to his combat that couldn't be absorbed. But I also know that you recently went back and on twitter talked about how when you went back and reread the buu arc, you found it much more enjoyable than you had remembered.
    I guess that it is more likely the pacing of the buu arc, which pulls these elements, ESPECIALLY the power up tennis arc, and stretches out it out to an unbearably long pace, made it the thing reason why it is going at the bottom of your list. Until I went back recently and re-watched dragon ball kai, I forgot how long this portion feels. I guess in that sense, I was being too naive.
    I am kind of interested as to your reasoning when you go through the boo arc. Either way, You surprised me. Well done!

      Im of the opinion Buu’s regeneration (in theory) isnt as bad as Cell’s. For one, its not lying to you claiming Piccolo used to do things like this. Two, its actually part of the core threat of Buu. Buu honestly gets his ass beaten so many times but wins in wars of attrition. Between Fusion having time limits and SSJ3 burning off ki at an alarming rate, it almost feels intentional that what makes Buu a threat at all is his regeneration. But the biggest failing in the Buu arc is what Lance mentioned in this video, the only thing anyone besides Blooma does is punch things hard. They never try and come up with a different strategy to stop Buu and his regeneration, they just keep trying to punch him harder.

      Yeah pacing must be one of the issue, also no new cool character, at least this arc had Trunks that everyone loved. Ultimately I think the Buu arc has the least sense of tension and old characters are becoming parody of themselves. This is my least favorite arc too, but I love anything Dragonball really, there is always some awesome stuff in each arc at least.

    Hunt for the Dragon Balls: 13 eps
    21st World Tournament: 15 eps
    Red Ribbon Army: 55 eps
    22nd World Tournament: 18 eps
    Demon King Piccolo: 31 eps
    23rd World Tournament: 21 eps
    Saiyan: 35 eps
    Better strap yourself in. On the plus side, that terrible Garlic Jr. saga is only 10 eps long, so you shouldn't suffer too long. On another note the Cell TV arc is 82 eps long (if you include the Afterlife Tournament stuff) and the Majin Buu TV arc lasts 88 eps.

    7:46 I agree with that criticism to a point. The earth can have better technology, dr Gero could be super smart, etc, etc, but those are rather moot points in my opinion. Freeza is MILLIONS of times stronger than anything dr Gero had ever seen before. He observed mecha Freeza and then had the means to make something stronger than him; to trivilize him by the multitude of millions? Had he observed Buu, could dr Gero have made something that trivialized Buu? (yes, I think the story is pretty blatant about how much stronger each new villain is to the point of trivializing everything before)
    I could have accepted it if this was still silly, humor Adventure DB, but not in "this-is-serious" DB. The nonchalant explanations from the earlier DB just don't cut it anymore. That is also why I think the Buu arc is better than the Cell arc. It doesn't take itself as serious anymore; the nonchalant explanations works better. Imo, Cell = worst arc, Buu = 2nd worst arc. It really should have ended with Freeza.

In regards to Gohan, I kinda wonder if his larger role in this arc it was because he was actually topping the polls in this arc.
    I mean, I've been reading more interview in regards to some decisions Toriyama made due to fan response. For example, while Vegeta was meant to be dropped in the Saiyan arc, Tori kept him alive due to popular response. Same with the movies Resurrection F and Super Broly. My issue with future Trunks is that by the end of the arc he seemed like a pointless character. Other then giving Goku his medicine and telling everyone about the future what did he actually contribute after that. His knowledge of 17 or 18 never contributed to finding Dr. Gero’s lab, his new found strength from being in the time chamber did nothing to Cell, and he just dies during the Cell games. What was the point of having him in this story after he told everyone important information in the past other then telling everyone that Dr. Gero and 19 were not the Androids he was talking about. Maybe Toriyama had different plans with him had 19 and Dr. Gero remained as villains but had to scrap it when he was pressured to change the villains (twice) and his original plans for future Trunks was thrown out the window.
    In a way he reminds me of Asami from Legend of Korra sharing similar issues with each other. like Trunks she is not bad character at all, but she and Trunks contribute so little to the events at hand of there respective stories you wonder why they are even there in the first place. There contribution seem to be more about giving emotional development for other characters (Trunks with Vegeta and Asami with Korra) but they don’t serve much of a story purpose other then that, unless you count Asami being the transportation of the show as to contributing to the plot.

    This arc was a clusterfuck which introduces a lot of my favorite characters in the series while being an absolute mess of a story. We didn't get enough of #17 and #18 before Cell took over the story, Cell expositing his entire plan ruined him a bit, I find the entire island conflict with Cell transforming to be boring as hell and full of artificial tension, the Cell Games hardly felt like a tournament, and Gohan being the big hero felt out of nowhere and unearned especially since he's shown over and over again that he's not ready. And don't get me started on how badly written Goku is in this arc. It makes me wonder what Toriyama's original vision of this arc was going to be like with #19 and #20 as the main villains before all of this (former) editorial interference. It may have actually focused on Dr. Gero's revenge. We'll never know, and I doubt Toriyama remembers what he was going to do back then. This arc could have been worse, but with everything on display in this arc, it should have been better.

    I know that it's going to be a long time before you get to the next DBD TV so I will say this ahead of time. Most of the filler in the Freeza arc is bad filler with Bulma being mopey and whiny. Since the Freeza arc is the most well-known arc in the US, it has unfortunately defined Bulma as a character. She is the useless load that does nothing but whine and complain about everything. There could have been better filler. For example, the characters avoid flying to not be detected by the scouters. Instead of walking, Bulma should have had one of her capsule aircraft and she could be constantly taxiing the boys around and that way she would always be around and always be a witness to the events so she would know what's going on and never be upset about being in the dark. Also, while Krillin and Dende are going to see the Grand Elder, Gohan is alone with Bulma for quite some time. Since Bulma is one of Goku's oldest friends, this could have had a scene where Bulma tells Gohan "you remind me of your father when he was a boy." This could then lead into a clip show where Bulma tells the whole story of Dragon Ball prior to this point which would get new watchers up to speed on the story so far. Of course, Bulma only witnessed small portions of the Red Ribbon Army arc and the Demon King Piccolo arc, so they would have to be more truncated.
    So I guess you're never going to address why it was considered necessary to censor Mr. Satan's name to Hercule like how you talked about the controversy surrounding Mr. Popo.
