  • A train driver is traumatized.
LOCO is used with permission from Rory Wilson. Learn more at vimeo.com/rorywilson95.
Paul is a train driver on the railway going about his job when the unthinkable happens: his train hits someone committing suicide on the tracks.
The incident is tragic and horrible, and Paul cannot get the details, textures and trauma out of his mind. Yet he goes on with his job, despite everything, suffering silently as things go back to "the usual."
Written and directed by Rory Wilson, this short drama is an incisive, empathetic look into how issues of mental health and trauma intersect with a forgotten victim of certain tragedies.
Rendered in a gritty naturalism that captures the train driver's milieu and a sure-handed sense of pacing, the narrative weaves a psychologically intricate narrative to capture how Paul is haunted by a death he witnesses on the tracks, and how it exacts a toll on him. The outer events of the plot are straightforward, but Paul's inner landscape is anything but.
The actual suicide's details are parsed out throughout the film's duration, as flashbacks give more information and emotion with each pass. Jagged editing rhythms and vivid sound design put viewers in a visceral, immediate place. Though we don't see anything explicitly violent, we feel it in the textures and shape of the filmmaking. The approach generates a sense of dread as it becomes clear what is going to happen, and this dread haunts viewers as much as it does Paul.
The film's greatest strength is actor Andrew Schofield's performance, which makes trauma's murky, difficult internal emotions clear, precise and relatable to the audience. As the film reveals the full extent of the incident, it also reveals its impact on Paul: cowed and haunted by grief and trauma, and yet expected to soldier on as if it were just another day on the job. He is a shell of a man, and thanks to such emotionally immersive storytelling, we understand exactly just what a burden he shoulders.
Keenly observed, insightful and ultimately heartbreaking, LOCO captures the mental strain of train operators and drivers, especially in light of recent cuts to support funding for these men and women. Yet little discussion exists about the impact of these events on the people who witness these tragedies up close. For many train drivers, these incidents linger in the memory forever, often for years in a form of PTSD that goes unaddressed. These hidden, quiet tragedies have their own devastation, and LOCO shines a light on this silent suffering.

Railwaymen in general, and drivers in particular, are the most competent and conscious “blue-collar” workers in industry. Right up there with experienced teachers or even paramedics. Some manage to carry on working after the trauma of a death due to their equipment, others just die. They are as responsible as airline pilots, and their trains are just as lethal as an aircraft. It’s deplorable that drivers now get no compensation for damage done to their emotional, mental or physical health, owing to the actions of other people.

Switzerland at least has care teams, if youve hit someone you automatically get one assigned to you, basically they are drivers themselves that did an intensive course on mental health, they call you up within 24hrs and will regularly check up on you, either personally or on the phone, and have strict confidentiality. its easier to confide to someone who you know, knows the work you do

I knew someone who used to conduct one of the subway trains in NYC and she told me that when you train or when you're in school for it or whatever, they go over the inevitable which is, at least once in your career, tragedy on the tracks will happen. It can't be helped. So they have counseling departments and they pay for any additional counseling a person might want or need after such an event. Which I guess is a good thing. But my friend said that it all but can't be avoided. Too many people are in pain. That's doesn't even count unfortunate accidents that happen all the time too.

I'm not sure if many people can fully understand what train drivers go through when the train they are driving hits someone, whether it be accidental or a suicide.
That's not to say that I do, but I've tried to get my head around it.
When I was at school an acquaintance took his life this way, and even though it was a commuter train, and about half a mile from the station, (therefore not travelling at a significant speed) it still struck him with enough force that he was found almost 100m away from the impact*.
This obviously must have been enormously traumatic for the driver, and that's before discovering that it was a 15year old taking his own life.
I hate to use the term "selfish" when talking about someone taking their own life, but it is - the train driver is a very unwilling participant in the act - they cannot swerve, nor can they brake in a short distance, so they just have to accept that is happening - a horrific predicament to find yourself in.
*The British Transport Police and the Procurator Fiscal, (equivalent to the Coroner in Scotland) had a good idea of what had occurred, because tragically he did it in front of a friend.
In my teens there were four suicides of lads that I knew, to varying degrees.

The driver gets it first, then the Network Rail guys (and girls) and the RAIB people, out on the tracks picking up the bits and then the Depot Techs who have to clean and repair the train (a smell you never forget I'm told) after that. And not forgetting the Emergency Services people or any of the general public who happen to witness it. It's possibly the most selfish way there is to take your own life. It impacts on so many others.
I know that the person taking their own life isn't in a good place and probably doesn't even consider the impact on others, their own health drives their actions. It would be really good it Governments started taking mental health seriously. The HSE in the UK have already said that mental health is going to be the biggest killer in industry with a few decades.

I live near train tracks. My children's high school is within sight of the tracks. Over the years we've had some suicides and accidents. I cant imagine what the train conductors go through when this happens. Good short.

Forty two years ago a friend of mine from high school jumped in front of the subway train in Toronto Canada. I would get chills every time I went through that stop. They said she jumped, I don’t know if that’s what is truth. A few weeks ago a whole bunch of us and she had such a great time, so many laughs. We didn’t see that something was bothering. Of course, you never know behind closed doors what really goes on🥺😔😢. May you rest in peace Debbie✝️❤️💐🕊

My father was also faced with a similar scenario as a man jumped on the tracks and died . His mental health wass severely affected while his boss and the dead person's family, presumably by suicide ,decided to put the blame upon him .

I have a friend who works as a train driver. One day there were workers on the tracks. Then there was a train coming from the wrong direction, on the wrong track, where a worker worked. I don´t wanna tell details. But for train driver who experiences an accident or is forced to see suicide, their lives change forever.

Incredibly moving film, tackling a subject which rarely gets the attention it deserves.
The statistics at the end were sobering and while it’s not at all surprising that the Tories cut these benefits, it makes my blood boil.

WTF 😳 the government cut train drivers off from compensation for trauma they experience in their work? That’s inhumane! The first train suicide I went to as a Paramedic had an entire group of trainee drivers on board. Traumatised for life!

I totally understand the posttraumatic stress syndrome I have it from something else happening to me but I remember being in London on my way to the Vidal sasooned academy just my every day ride to the class, all the sudden we stopped not abruptly but then it took a while before we start it up again because they had to clean up a body, it totally upset me being an American not that we don’t have suicide here and a lot of bad stuff but just the thought of being on the train that ran over someone brought me to tears.

I live near the tracks, like 3 blocks away. I grew up hearing how reckless people are at railroad crossings. For example, people would wait on the tracks for the train to pass. That place used to be a yard, so it has multiple tracks and it is not really predictable, because the train changes tracks. So you see a train using the furthest left track, and suddenly it changes to the furthest right. People, instead of waiting behind the barriers, will wait on the track they think the train is not going to use. I remember my aunt saying "you have no idea how many people I had to tell to move from there and stay behind the barriers, even ladies with prams". I can´t even think what the driver feels when they see this situation.

Yesterday I was on a train, which was the next train to go through a tunnel after the previous train had just hit someone. I keep thinking about the train drivers announcement he made when we were stuck in the tunnel under the bridge, saying there was an obstruction on the tracks in front of us and he didn’t know how long it would be before we could continue. When we came out the tunnel I saw the rail update that someone was hit. We had to wait in the tunnel, probably while the body was cleared, then slowly moved into the station just in front of the bridge. We then had to wait for another 20 minutes or so before we had to go backwards into London. I keep thinking about the train driver of my train, if he’s ok. And of the train driver who was the one who actually hit the person. I hope they can get the support they need. I can’t imagine what it’s like to witness something like that.
