I think one big reason for the acceleration war among EV manufacturers is that everyone born prior to 1990 remembers the "economy cars" of the Malaise Era, cars where you measured acceleration times with a calendar instead of a stopwatch. I remember my parents had a Ford Pinto with an automatic, it was so slow it was actually dangerous, especially considering that we lived in New Jersey. This was of course the home of the "Jersey Freeway" where you pulled out of a strip mall parking lot on Route 4 or 17 or 23 straight into 55-60mph traffic and prayed you didn't get rear-ended before you could get up to speed. Back in the Malaise Era it looked like there was no room for cars to be fun any more unless you could afford either an old muscle car that was in showroom condition or one of a handful of exotic or luxury marques. I think there's an unconscious fear out there that concern over climate change and carbon emissions is going to force us into "Malaise Era II", with crappy, un-fun cars that are "good for the environment" and serve as basic transportation but nothing else.

You can get even better range if you go down a tire size to the one the base model has but i'm not spending money on new rims just for that.

I got a used AWD one of these a couple weeks ago and my god, it feels so nice to drive. I look forward to going to work in the morning literally just because it means I get an excuse to drive my 6 again. This car is quiet, refined, and is the quickest thing at 90% of red light stops so I get to politely leave everyone in the dust if I so desire. Now, if only it didn't have the actual worst sound system I've ever heard in a car at this price point, then it would be a nigh perfect vehicle for my preferences. Guess you can't have everything.
This car really is vaguely reminiscent of the 1st Gen CLS/Audi A5 Sportback or something in-between those 2 cars, and I love it so much like finally a modern competent sedan not made by the German marques
My previous employer leased 3 of the dual motor version of this and it has been my favourite car to drive. Elegant, fast, quiet. An absolute gentleman’s car.
Wrong does not weigh close to 5500, that is GROSS vehicle weight rating including maximum Passengers and Cargo. Dual Motor AWD Ioniq 6 weights about 4600lbs.
The drive modes between Normal and Sport actually are different. Normal prioritizes rear motor but at any speed will kick on front motor and full power when you ask for it. In Sport, front motor is always engaged, whether you are breathing on the throttle or going full beans. Also you can set a custom drive mode and enable even shaper throttle response than Sport. There is a higher setting available.
This is the best review video of the the I-6 I have watched because its intelligent, funny and goes beyond a simple review of features. In Korea, This car is famous for its moldy smell, where all the rainwater flowing down from the windshield gathers in the cabin filter case🤢 It's not clear if this flaw is completely resolved.
LOL that is going to be a rare case and should be solved. That is not unusual in old cars, a well known fixable problem. Also just some small seepage is the worst for mold.
@@Neojhun Nah., it's a glitch designed to fail. The Ioniq 5 had a cabin filter on the inside of the windshield, so it didn't collect water, but with a different design on the same platform, the windshield moved back and the cabin filter was designed to be exposed to rainwater. Dealers did temporary waterproofing with silicone sealant, but it didn't work very well, and many car owners were disappointed with it
@Pandascams look at the Kia EV6 also. Way more powerful than either. If u need the space, skip the 6. It's spacious inside and looks great but the trunk is just average
Bought one a few months ago, for me at least it's essentially the perfect car. More acceleration than I'll ever need, deceptively huge cargo space, comfortable, Android Auto, plenty of range, very efficient, insanely fast charging on road trips, and I think it looks fantastic.
I saw this in Forza, and loved it. After seeing one at a dealership and test driving one, this is my dream daily. I'm 19, and when I've got enough money, I'm going to get one, and this video just made me even more sure of that.
I had an Uber driver in one of these, and she hates it. She said the 12v battery left her stranded so many times that she now never leaves home without one of those jump starter boxes in the car. The dealer kept say they had fixed the problem, but it kept happening. All the automated features of the vehicle only serve as obstacles that make everything more complicated than it needs to be. She previously had a model 3 and she very much regretted not getting another Tesla. For me, as a passenger, it was lovely... Smooth, comfortable,quiet...
I rented several Kia Niro EVS, both the last generation and the current generation. They were brand new and the 12V battery died every time. There is an accessory mode that you can put it in that uses the high voltage battery instead of the 12v when it's not in Drive. After I learned that it never died again, also there is a jump 12-volt button in the car that she probably doesn't know about. Stupid design but she just needs to read her manual as well
I almost bought one of these (in the worst named colour of them all: *biophilic blue*), but it was too geared for comfort than sport and that's what put me off. Other than personal preference in it's road manners I honestly couldn't fault the car one iota. It really is a big, wafty, 90s executive saloon car and I wildly appreciate Hyundai for being out-there with the styling. Seriously, more of this, please! For those that care, I ended up with a BYD Seal 3.8S instead in Atlantis Grey. It's not quite as sporty as a BMW but it has that "Bruiser Cruiser" energy I like.
I remember seeing one the first time around a year ago and thinking it looked like if someone drew a Porsche from memory. Definitely a weird design, but it does stand out in traffic.
Its wild how if i see this in person i can talk myself into almost finding it attractive but every photo pulls back the veil and exposes the true design
I just got a 2024 in the same spec (different color) last month. I love it! So much more interior space and more fun to drive than my Polestar 2, but the Polestar's infotainment is so much better. I thought this about the redesigned Prius in 2016. I know it's still a hatchback, but its styling reminded me of 1990s concept car. This Ioniq 6 looks like that but done in some reality where sedans are designed after RC cars sold by Sharper Image in 2004.
Just leased a leftover 2024 IONIQ 6 AWD for the price of a base Sonata. Free charging at Electrify America for 2 years. Love it so far, quick and comfortable.
Probably going to get a lot of flack for saying this, but traded an aging Model S for a Solterra (bZ4X). I did drive the Ioniq 6 loving the way it looked, and the specs. That however is where it fell apart for me. It looks like a low sleek sedan from the outside, but sitting inside it felt to me like a SUV (too high off the ground). It felt like it was experiencing an identity crisis. After test driving several EV's I ended up in the Solterra. It drives and feels exactly how I expected, despite the controversial specs, it's a vehicle that really suites my lifestyle here in Central OR. No regrets.

A friend of mine owns an Ioniq 6 and of all the EV's ive driven it is by far my favorite. I dont know how much there is to this beyond a feeling but, to me, it feels that as more companies pivot to "mobility" rather than being automakers a lot of what they make has started to feel less like they want to make cars rather, they want to make an Iphone you can drive. It's not creative at all. It's just a mess of disjointed designs copied from elsewhere, just like most Korean products.
Something you missed; charging speed. This has Hyundais 800v architecture which can go 10-80 in under 20 min, and can get 100 miles into the battery in 6 min. It’s not the only one to do this but along with the ioniq5 and EV6, the Hyundai/kia EVs are some of (if not the) cheapest EV you can buy with this super high speed charging. It literally cuts your charging times by more than half in some cases compared to a competitor like an ID4 or a Mach E
What percentage of chargers that work more than 70% of the time are capable of this charging speed?
@@bassandtrebleclef with preconditioning the 350kw chargers will get close. Except when some jackass puts their Chevy Bolt on there thinking it makes a difference for them, so you have to plug in at the 150kw one.
@@bassandtrebleclef I recently did a 5000 mile road trip in my Ioniq 5 and had no serious issues charging. Most EA chargers are now 350kw, and even the 150kw ones will charge 10-80% in like 21 minutes instead of 18. My basic routine was drive 2 hour (150 miles) charge for 20 minutes. Hit the bathroom, grab a quick bite, back on the road. 600 miles a day was easy. Can't really do this on any other electric vehicle platform. There's a lot more fast chargers out there than people realize, especially on the interstate corridors. Most of the rural ones have no waits, sometimes in big cities there can be a line but the most I've waited is 20 minutes.
Then 3 years later new study finds out that rapid charging cuts longevity in half or something fun like that.
@@volvo245 You simply have an existing bias and no desire to learn the truth. EV's have been rapid charging for over a decade; extensive studies show no acceleration of range loss. There are Taxi cab drivers fast charging daily putting 200,000 miles on EV's.

Seeing a review of your own car popup from ya does make me worried, but you hit the nail on the head. I've got one now and my favorite part is the fact that it's just... a good car. It's not doing too little or too much, it gives you enough fun for when you want it or to get yourself out of a bad situation on the highway when you put your foot down.
But it just feels... like I'm taking care of it and it's taking care of me. It's nice and it's comfortable.
The sound at 14:16 made me laugh way more than it should've, but it's true. I used to own a passat and every time I drove someone else's car and came back to mine, I had to relearn to press the brakes softly again lol
I recently got a mk7 gti and my God I never knew how sensitive these things are. It's a weekend car and every single time I drive it, I accidentally brake check someone 😂😂
Mk7 Jetta here, yeah touchy is an understatement.
Had one of these as a taxi in korea, remarkably nice
its range is as good as my 50 litre petrol tank in my altezza. i'd call that more than enough. i'm a sedan man from the past into the future
it can charge to 80% in 10 min too!
Shoot, I thought I was doing well to get 250mi range in my old Forester with a 13gal tank.
@@mezzb most of that forum stuff is really overblown, it's a parade of new owners and curious outsiders trying to fact check the rumors about needing to treat your battery like a newborn baby and the same answers being given over and over again. In reality, EV batteries are lasting a lot longer than anyone thought they would, and usually it's not because of any special attention being paid by the owners, The battery is going to outlast the car for the most part and it will still be performing near its brand new level that whole time If your driving cycle is like any sort of average person's.
Altezza? *drags cigarette* now that's a name I haven't heard for a long time
I think one big reason for the acceleration war among EV manufacturers is that everyone born prior to 1990 remembers the "economy cars" of the Malaise Era, cars where you measured acceleration times with a calendar instead of a stopwatch.
Reaching.
@@logikgrNot reaching in the least. Look at the early electrics and hybrids of the 2000s. The Honda Insight, Leaf, Prius. They were MISERABLE cars. When did EVs suddenly take off? When the Tesla Model S came out. Why? Because it was FAST. That was all it took to make it cool in the eyes of the public. Automakers spend billions on market research and came to the same conclusion.
Here in suburban Australia, the BYD Seal has quickly become a common sight. It too is a sedan, and looks far more attractive than its Tesla competitors.
Seal is okay but do yall have BYD Han? This thing is expensive but felt great
The Han looks nice - reminds me a bit of a Lucid. We don’t have them in AU though. We were extremely late to introduce efficiency standards, so MFRs haven’t bothered importing many EVs or even hybrids compared with other countries…. We do have a lot of men’s rights trucks popping up everywhere though….
@@19ThreeLions97 There is a few BYD Han here, seems to be grey imports. They were arrived here in Aus east coast before Seal. They are rare and eye watering price to import. It's a luxury car for rich people with odd taste.
BYD is going to eat Tesla's lunch in every market it's allowed to sell in. It's no wonder President Musk is making so much noise about BYD's entry into the Mexican market, supposedly as a back door into the USA.

2024 owner and this review captures the feeling very well.
The RWD is the one to pick for range. I get roughly 339 miles of range during mild weather, 305 miles in the summer, and currently 259 miles in the winter at freezing. You can get even better range if you go down a tire size to the one the base model has but i'm not spending money on new rims just for that.
All depends how much you drive. In fact it's a different car with 225/55 18".

The 5 is genuinely cool looking. I'm not sold on this one.
@@titussardonicus338As an HI5 owner, agreed.
As someone currently exploring the market for EVs, this car is so ideal to me, for all the reasons mentioned here and more, except for aesthetics. I love the idea of this car, and I want the model line to succeed. I hope they eventually make one that's not quite so aggressively unattractive.
Wait until they update it to get the 84kwh pack that the new 5 has and the NACS connector so you won't have to deal with adapters in the near future.

The Ioniq 6 weighs 3968 pounds for rwd and 4621 for AWD. GVWR is the maximum weight with people and luggage. Gotta make sure you search for curb weight.
How you can make car videos for years and get this wrong is embarrassing
I'm considering starting my own channel reviewing regular cars. The tagline would be something like "All the insight of RCR, but without the pre-cum". If only such a channel existed...
I've always thought these have a very Porsche look from the back
I got a used AWD one of these a couple weeks ago and my god, it feels so nice to drive.
Agreed, Bose is crap.
The Ioniq 6 looks pretty cool and somewhat unique, great video!
This car really is vaguely reminiscent of the 1st Gen CLS/Audi A5 Sportback or something in-between those 2 cars, and I love it so much like finally a modern competent sedan not made by the German marques
My sister just got one of these and you basically described her pretty well. The amount of cabin space is surprising.
That rear looks like a Porsche and I love it.
My previous employer leased 3 of the dual motor version of this and it has been my favourite car to drive. Elegant, fast, quiet. An absolute gentleman’s car.
I unironically love the exterior design and would be happy to rock a base SE with the super long range.
A buddy of mine got one of these recently and really loves it
320 HP
446 Ibfts of torque

What does that do to the tire life? Sheesh!
Three tons with a few passengers. Batteries are heavy.
As I went back multiple times to the Imperial Le Baron review (my favorite) , the opening of this episode rings the same idea.

This is the best review video of the the I-6 I have watched because its intelligent, funny and goes beyond a simple review of features. I bought a new '23 I-6 SEL RWD a month ago and love how it drives and looks. I can charge it at home via a level 2 EVSE powered by our PV system so the cost to drive it is looooow!
I love the Citroen vibe. Hyundai has been making fun looking EVs. My mom had the Ioniq 5 and it’s funky and fun too!
Dealers did temporary waterproofing with silicone sealant, but it didn't work very well, and many car owners were disappointed with it
My wife has this car. It’s honestly pretty fun to drive lol. But it’s huge. It’s as long as an outback.

Bought one a few months ago, for me at least it's essentially the perfect car. More acceleration than I'll ever need, deceptively huge cargo space, comfortable, Android Auto, plenty of range, very efficient, insanely fast charging on road trips, and I think it looks fantastic.
there are three of these in my neighborhood. two at the same house. ergo, it has some appeal.
I will never get used to EV's. My favorite part of car videos is when they pop the hood so I can see that engine.
I loved the 30mins I had with and Ioniq6, but I can’t wait for you guys Stateside to get the ID7 (especially the tourer)
Stupid design but she just needs to read her manual as well
@MugatuJag I'm surprised the dealer who claimed to have fixed it didn't tell her if that was the problem
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the clean nails thing has come up at least once before!
He did it reviewing an old Cadillac.
I bought one over a year ago. I’m so deep in debt but I can’t let this go. It’s soooooooo good

Reminds me of the concept Mercedes cls sedan. It's like they took the side profile of that car and bent it more on each side into a bumerang.
I thought this about the redesigned Prius in 2016. I know it's still a hatchback, but its styling reminded me of 1990s concept car. This Ioniq 6 looks like that but done in some reality where sedans are designed after RC cars sold by Sharper Image in 2004.

Nice looking ride
No regrets.
Honestly I think the Ioniq 6 is a good looking car, it looks even better in person than it does online too, I say this as someone who is not at all fond of the EV future
Beautiful car, reminds me of the original Saab 900 5 door hatchback ❤

A friend of mine owns an Ioniq 6 and of all the EV's ive driven it is by far my favorite. I dont know how much there is to this beyond a feeling but, to me, it feels that as more companies pivot to "mobility" rather than being automakers a lot of what they make has started to feel less like they want to make cars rather, they want to make an Iphone you can drive. Hyndai/Kia seems like the only ones who understand that theyre making cars first and the look and feel should match that which I really appreciate. At the end of the day im a car enthusiast not a "tech" enthusiast and making this that are more of the latter and less of the former will only alienate peopld like me
First one I saw reminded me of a Citroen DS. That low slung rear and overall design is a nice change from everything else today.
