This entire album, Upstairs at Eric's, is outstanding, but you cannot go wrong with Alison Moyet as a singer. Such a unique, soulful and powerful voice. I highly recommend "Only You" and "Midnight" to get a couple other great samples of Yaz (or Yazoo in Britain) and their awesome synthpop. The keyboardist, Vince Clark, has some other impressive stops on his resume with Depeche Mode and Erasure. Great review as always, guys!

You noted that she sounded a little bluesy. She actually was a working blues singer in London when she met these technopop/synth guys and fell in with them, and the combination was electric. And like others here are saying, you'll also love their song "Situation." Both songs filled dance floors in the early eighties.

Born in ‘69 so I grew up with the wonderful music styles of the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s!!! Want synth pop artists with great vocals you gotta include Howard Jones, Thomas Dolby, Depeche Mode, New Order, Simple Minds, Berlin, Psychedelic Furs, Thompson Twins, Spandau Ballet… I could go on and on!!!
Yeah, Allison is an underrated legend and totally in a class of her own! Before there was Adele, there was Allison. 😉 Comments below have many of her best recommendations covered, but I would also add "It won't be Long" from her "Hoodoo" album the only CD I still own of hers from back in the day.
Nina Hagen is a German Singer. Her Songs: "Ich glotz TV", "Hold me", a cover: "Ich weiß es wird einmal ein Wunder geschehen"(original from Zara Leander in the 1940´s). She is from the Punk Scene in West Germany in the end of the 1970´s. The start was in the GDR (East Germany DDR) I think 1975, with the song "Du hast den Farbfilm vergessen mein Michael". She left the GDR after 1975 to West Germany. I like her music.
You asked if there was another strong eighties synth vocalist that you've covered before: the Eurythmics with Annie Lennox. They were actually considered a synth band early on. A couple of other strong, danceable synth singles from the period that you used to hear in clubs are "Living on the Ceiling" (1982) by Blancmange and "I've Been Waiting for Tomorrow" (1983) by The The.
Yes, I also thought of Annie's vocal range. Would love to see a reaction of the duet with Annie Lennox and Aretha Franklin, Sisters are Doin' It for Themselves.
I was one of the ones who suggested Yaz/Yazoo and I KNEW Jay would love it!! Situation was another huge hit for Yaz. Thank you so much for reacting to it!!
I was a dj back then and I got my hands on it early, snuck it in around 1am, no "local" song recognition, and flooded the dance floor. It's such a jam! Yes, a jam, that's what we said. Great record...
This song is one of THE pinnacles of 80's synth-pop. Progressing into the 80's I think you might like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, "I Wonder if You Take Me Home." her vocals are a cut above a lot of what we heard on the radio at the time.
The sound of 1982 Dance Clubs. The powerful wail of Alison Moyet over Vince Clarke's percolating synths. Many people thought the singer was a guy until they saw a photo. (Even then they weren't quite sure.) 😛 "Don't Go" followed "Situation" as Billboard Dance chart #1s for the British group Yaz. Yaz was originally Yazoo in the U.K. -- but another Yazoo existed in U.S. so a sticker was placed over the "oo" on the early U.S. pressings. "Don't Go" peaked for 2 weeks @ #1 on the Billboard Dance chart after "Situation" peaked 4 weeks @ #1. "Situation" crossed over to the Billboard Hot 100 (#73) and the R&B/Soul chart (#31) but "Don't Go" didn't chart on either. Great record!
Yazoo had a few hit Situation & Only You. Alison Moyet is another story her first album came out in 85/86 called 'Invisible' she had five hits of that one the titled track (it killer) All cried out, Love resurrection the hole album is great. Whispering your name, is it love just too name a few.. her vocals are as you heard just astounding simple deep and gritty but she can soar when she does you just go with it.
I was in high school in small-town Georgia when this album came out, so I didn't get exposed to it until I went off to college in 1984. Everybody I knew had this album (Upstairs at Eric's), including me as soon as I could buy it. And then ten years later, Moyet's "Whispering Your Name" (extended remix) got A LOT of play among my people. Fantastic memories all.
I just listened to Moyet's album Essex (1994) for the first time in maybe 15 years or more. I wore this CD out in the mid to late 1990s. It is a pure joy. Back into the rotation it goes.
@@ncthom88 College is also where I first heard Yaz and it was the Upstairs at Eric's album. It was a small college in the mountains eight miles from the nearest town and a lot of my friends liked to do mushrooms and roam around in the woods. I didn't do drugs so I was their wrangler that made sure they got back to the dorms okay. They always listened to I Before E Except After C and In My Room as part of their experience.
Vince and Alison were at school together, knew of each other, had mutual friends. She was singer in a couple of punk bands while Vince was in Depeche Mode... He asked her to do a vocals on a couple of demos of tracks he had written, he sent the demo to the label with the intent of finding another singer or act (he had hankering to become song writer/producer, rather than an artist), but the label said no, said her voice was the perfect match for them... Thus Yazoo was born. They did 2 perfect albums and a couple of non album singles.
Nina Hagen is a proto-punk, multi-octave vocal goddess from Germany. She does a cover of Frank Sinatra's "My Way" you would like. I also love "Born in Xixax" and "Seeman," a Rammstein cover. And "Get Your Body" with Adamski (a great club dance song).
Nina Hagen was born and raised in the socialist east part of Germany during the cold war. She became a Schlager Star with an training in Opera. 1977 she could leaf East Germany and after getting inspiration in London the founded the Nina Hagen Band and her first album with the same name, was a revelation. Never ever had German music listeners heard such a female punk lady. She was/is an icon. On YT is the video of her full concert at Rockpalast and there also single songs from that concert. For a teenager like me, ther was music before Nina Hagen and Music after the first album, Music was never the same again...
Omg. This song….is a masterpiece. I adore Yaz. Alison Moyet’s voice is just mesmerizing. Check out “Where Hides Sleep”. It will give you the best chills 😌🖤 Also “Only You” by Yaz is another favorite!
I’ve always thought of Mama Cass, Allison Moyet and Adele on a continuum. Generations of women with unique, yet similar, voices. Love them. And if you are looking for 80s synth pop - check out Howard Jones or Thomas Dolby.
Love Yazoo/Yaz!!! Please consider their hit Situation and Only You. Allison Moyet is such a unique artist. I like her songs Is This Love and Love Resurrection. Please revisit Depeche Mode soon. Their songs Halo, See You and Leave in Silence!! Love you guys, keep smiling!! 🎶😎🎶 Edited to add: Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" 💙💙💙
Alison Moyet (or Alf as she was known in Yazoo) is one of the UKs greatest vocalists ever. So many I could suggest of hers but my favourite is 'This House'
Girl, you were on point when stating Alison Moyet has the best voice of the 80s synth pop! Because she does hands down. Alison and Jimmy Sommerville are the KING AND QUEEN vocally of 80s pop!!!
I saw Alison live about 6 or 7 years ago as a guest artist with Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, she's still got it. And mentioning Jools that man is the rabbit hole of rabbit holes to go down, from his early work with Squeeze through about 30 plus years of having his Orchestra and duetting with an endless list of legends on his TV show.
When I was a teen in Baltimore in the 80's, my cousin was a DJ who'd travel to New York to Dj the clubs up there. He brought this album back, played it and it blew my mind.
I actually squeaked when I saw you were doing them! Upstairs at Eric’s entire album is so good. If you listen to MIDNIGHT you can get an even better appreciation for her voice since it starts out acapella. They have other songs that were more popular but it’s so good.
Midnight is one of my all time favorite songs. The way she starts that song, without any accompaniment, just her magical earthy voice is everything. I find myself singing that song all the time. And the lyrics…and Vince’s music. That song is genius.
To answer the question "who is Nina Hagen", she is a German punk singer and extremely extrovert, a true born "Rock 'n Roll Punk. Her music is, not for everyone hehehe, i personally adore her but i can fully understand why she is a bit "much" for some people. Regardless of that, she is a very big name in the late 70's and early 80's punk scene, worth checking out just to see how different she was/is.
Early 80's! We believed we were heading into the 25 century overnight. Synth sounds made the New Wave and Punk was the future. We were the New Generation and a prefect mix of cool and nerd, or so we thought. Alison Moyet, "The Voice!".
Alison Moyet had a solo career as well, her song Is This Love is definitely worth a listen, as well as her song Invisible. Also Yazoo's Only You is worth a listen.
Damn. Taking me back to my clubbing days in the 80s! This song cleared the seats and crowded the dancefloor! Alison Moyet has an incredible voice. Check out "Invisible" by her. Amber is correct, though: Alison > Corey Hart.
The reason for the two names is there was another band in the US with the name Yazoo already so their record label suggested they shorten it to YAZ in the US to avoid potential Lawsuits. As for Vince Clark the man is a legend having formed & been a part of Depeche Mode, Yazoo & Erasure.
If you're looking for standout vocals from the 80's, synth pop genre, then you need to look at The Communards. Start with "Don't leave me this way" and "Never can say goodbye". You might even recognize them!
Omg, my sister came back from college with this album when I was like 12-- so totally awesome!!! Situation by Yaz (they went by Yaz in the US but Yazoo in the UK, I think) and anything solo Alison Moyet solo is also fire!!! 🔥🔥🔥
"Don't Go" is a song by British synth-pop band Yazoo (known in the US and Canada as Yaz). It was released in 1982 as the second single from their debut album, Upstairs at Eric's (20 August 1982). The song peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Yazoo's second top 5 hit. In the US, where the band was known as Yaz, the song was their second big hit on the American dance chart, where it spent two weeks at number one in October 1982. Their first American dance chart hit was "Situation", which had also gone to number one on this chart earlier the same year. The music video for the song features band members Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke in a sort of haunted mansion with Clarke cast in the role of Victor Frankenstein. The song re-entered the UK Dance Chart on 13 December 2009 at number 30, peaking at number 15 on 2 January 2010.
I’m glad Jay liked this! Hopefully you can give erasure another chance. Also, check out Vince clark when he was still with Depeche Mode “just can’t get enough” it’s ‘83 I believe

Some modern groups emulate their sound in a sort of himAre. Check out ‘Blaqk Audio - Stiff Kittens’
Another 80s artist is Paul Young, Come Back and Stay is one of my favorite songs. It’s from 1983 .
Yes! And I love his cover of Daryl Hall's "Everytime You Go Away"
And Tear your Playhouse Down!!!!
One of my favorites of LIVE aide was when Alyson and Paul Young teamed up 🎉❤🎉
Yazoo had some great 80s dance club songs! "Situation" was another really good one. Alison had an amazing voice!
Yeah, Allison is an underrated legend and totally in a class of her own! Before there was Adele, there was Allison. 😉 Comments below have many of her best recommendations covered, but I would also add "It won't be Long" from her "Hoodoo" album the only CD I still own of hers from back in the day.
@Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT you won't get a disagreement from me!
That’s exactly what I have said for years. I love Adele but from the very first time I heard her I thought…she’s a new era Alison Moyet.
Invisible is one of my faves from her.
I remember watching Ms Alison Moyet on Top of the Pops when I was 6 or so in 1986. I was entranced
Annie Lennox immediately springs to mind when you're talking about strong voices in synth music. I mean hers is unparalleled.
Annie and Alison were the voices of popmusic in the 80's without a doubt.
Annie L was a close 2nd to Alison M in the UK Both Legends with bands and on their own
Also Annie's daughter has started a singing career.
Visage - Fade to grey
Lead into Gold - Faster than Light
Living On the Ceiling is one of my all time fave 80s!
Ha! Still play this song at least once a week.
My kids and I get our 80's dance moves on every time I play it haha
I was one of the ones who suggested Yaz/Yazoo and I KNEW Jay would love it!! Situation was another huge hit for Yaz. Thank you so much for reacting to it!!
Vince was also a founding member of Depeche Mode...a great duo. Check out Only You, too.
SITUATION is another good one by this band. I CAN'T WAIT by Nu Shooz is a pretty sweet pop synth tune, too.
I was a dj back then and I got my hands on it early, snuck it in around 1am, no "local" song recognition, and flooded the dance floor. It's such a jam! Yes, a jam, that's what we said. Great record...
@@jtaljl Which song? Situation or I Can't Wait?
@@jhamler1 Whoops, how vague of me...duh! I Can't Wait Nu Shooz. (blushing)
@@jtaljl I still jam to it
Their song "Situation" is THE vibe of the early 80's. A groove that even a hard rocker will give a nod to.
This song is one of THE pinnacles of 80's synth-pop. Progressing into the 80's I think you might like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, "I Wonder if You Take Me Home." her vocals are a cut above a lot of what we heard on the radio at the time.
She's freestyle music but very good.
Here we go, hell yeah! So glad I was in college in the early 80’s. This is it !
YAZOO IS INCREDIBLE !!!!! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
Allison has a fantastic voice!
Yazoo was great.
Upstairs at Erik’s a hidden gem of an album as is Allison Moyet. Vince Clark was an original member of Depeche Mode.
Alison Moyet’s voice is one for the ages. Fabulous period for music, synths were everywhere and done so well by so many.
Moyet is one of the Great English voices and is STILL killing it!
Another British 80's pop legend. Alison Moyet went on to have her own very successful solo career...... One powerful voice she has.
I STILL have that album! Love it!
I wore my "Upstairs At Eric's" cassette tape out! Lol had to buy a second one.
Alison Moyet is one of the greats, that VOICE! I loved All Cried Out from her solo album in 1984.
This was a huge dance hit. I love it!
Omg! I absolutely loved Yazoo back in the day!! Alison Moyet had the most amazing range to her voice.Great song choice guys;)x
She's something else, that's for sure! Another rare talent.
It will give you the best chills 😌🖤
Also “Only You” by Yaz is another favorite!
I’ve always thought of Mama Cass, Allison Moyet and Adele on a continuum. Generations of women with unique, yet similar, voices. Love them.
And if you are looking for 80s synth pop - check out Howard Jones or Thomas Dolby.
I think Yazoo must have passed me by because I’ve never heard this! Definitely a vibe! 🎶
Yeah I'm thinking the same.🤔
😲
I don’t think that I’ve ever heard of them either, 🙋🏻♀️
@Jamie Dianne this one and Yaz's other hit song "Situation" were huge in the techno and house dance clubs, in the US, back in the 80's.
Alison Moyet is a legend, such a great voice and everything Vince touches turns to gold, genius 👍
Edited to add: Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" 💙💙💙
Alison Moyet (or Alf as she was known in Yazoo) is one of the UKs greatest vocalists ever. So many I could suggest of hers but my favourite is 'This House'
Was waiting for you guys to check out Yaz! (Yazoo in Britain I believe) - Alison Moyet has one of the great voices of the 80s!
Amber's reaction to Moyet's grit and range was so on point.
The great Alison Moyet, she was huge in the 80s, great vocalist
I actually squeaked when I saw you were doing them! Upstairs at Eric’s entire album is so good. If you listen to MIDNIGHT you can get an even better appreciation for her voice since it starts out acapella. They have other songs that were more popular but it’s so good.
Midnight is one of my all time favorite songs. The way she starts that song, without any accompaniment, just her magical earthy voice is everything. I find myself singing that song all the time. And the lyrics…and Vince’s music. That song is genius.
Yes! The emotion in Midnight… deep.
Such an underrated but totally amazing song, Allison is fire, especially on Midnight!
Incredible powerful voice
Early 80's! We believed we were heading into the 25 century overnight. Synth sounds made the New Wave and Punk was the future. We were the New Generation and a prefect mix of cool and nerd, or so we thought. Alison Moyet, "The Voice!".
Yazoo had some of my favorite songs ever like "Only You" and "All Cried Out", a must for any 80s play list.
when i listen this song i always remember tango y cash movie
Omg! My jam!! If you guys like Don’t Go you’ll love ❤️ Situation.
Alison Moyet had a solo career as well, her song Is This Love is definitely worth a listen, as well as her song Invisible. Also Yazoo's Only You is worth a listen.
Alison Moyet's "is this love" is one of my favourites of hers. great voice.
I love that duo Yazoo they are amazing back in my day when was going up in the 1980s they are amazing. Next one would be Nolan Thomas 🥰
Damn. Taking me back to my clubbing days in the 80s! This song cleared the seats and crowded the dancefloor! Alison Moyet has an incredible voice. Check out "Invisible" by her. Amber is correct, though: Alison > Corey Hart.
Totally agree. I can remember when this song came on the dance floor filled up
Alison Moyet is a queen! Such an amazing underrated voice. And Vince Clarke is a king
The reason for the two names is there was another band in the US with the name Yazoo already so their record label suggested they shorten it to YAZ in the US to avoid potential Lawsuits. As for Vince Clark the man is a legend having formed & been a part of Depeche Mode, Yazoo & Erasure.
To add to the confusion, there was another UK band named Yazz, who also had a big dance hit with "The Only Way is Up".
@@davedave8602 It was not a band, it was just one lady.
@@davedave8602 Yazz and The Plastic Population.
He also was a founding member of Depeche Mode!
Love the electronic sound and beat. :) Do remember this one from back in the day! Been a long time, Thx for the Review Guys! :)
Love the 80's, love yazoo, love your channel. 🎧🎶
“Love Resurrection” and “All Cried Out” are two great songs by Alison, she has a great blues voice.
I’m glad Jay liked this! Hopefully you can give erasure another chance. Also, check out Vince clark when he was still with Depeche Mode “just can’t get enough” it’s ‘83 I believe
yes Vince Clark depache mode an absolute geniuses 👌👍
Love this band! "Only You" is one of my all-time favorites!
