  • Learn how to crochet these neat puzzle balls! These are a great one-evening crochet project and make great gifts and are also a great stash buster. The kids are sure to love them! Based off the Amish puzzle balls that are made of fabric and you can take apart and put back together (hence, 'puzzle'). These are sewn together though so they can't be taken apart but they are still just as cool! Finished ball measures approx. 4.5" across.
    What you'll need:
-two colors of worsted weight, 4 ply yarn
-size G (4.0 mm) crochet hook
    -FiberFil stuffing
    -tapestry needle
    -scissors
    Pattern: (US terms)
    ch: chain
    sc: single crochet
    hdc: half-double crochet
    sl st: slip stitch
    dec: decrease two stitches together
    (0:49) With color A, chain 11.
(1:18) Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc until last ch (8 hdc). (sc, ch1, sc) in last ch. hdc across in bottom of beginning ch's to last ch (8 hdc), (sc, ch1) in last ch. Sl st into top of 1st sc to join. Ch 1.
(3:53) Rnd 2: Sc in joining st and in next 10 sts. (sc, ch1, sc) in ch1 space of previous rnd. 11 sc across, ch1, join to 1st sc. Fasten off.
(5:36) Rnd 3: Join color B to 1st stitch beside end ch1. 12sc across, skip ch1 space, 12sc across, join to top of 1st sc. Ch1.
(7:50) Rnd 4: Dec over next two stitches, 8sc, dec, dec, 8sc, dec. Join and ch1.
(10:12) Rnd 5: Sc in first 4 sts, dec, 8sc, dec, 4sc, join and ch1.
    (11:32) Rnd 6: Dec, 5sc, dec, dec, 5sc, dec, join and ch1.
    (12:36) Rnd 7: Dec, 3sc, dec, dec, 3sc, dec, join and ch1.
(13:31) Stuff with FiberFil stuffing. Do not over stuff.
(14:21) Rnd 8: Dec, sc, dec, dec, sc, dec, join and fasten off.
(16:00) Using the tutorial as a guide, sew pieces together.

I know I’m 8 years late in seeing this vid, yet it is a great video! I’ve only sewn these from material. Just learning to crochet and this vid makes the crochet version look so adorable and achievable. Mahalo for making this tutorial.

HRHDMKYT p.s.: Take a look at HappyBerry Crochet's Amish puzzle balls to see how to assemble these as 3 separate 'bracelets', which then go together as a genuine puzzle. Enjoy them both ways! (I'm hoping this will be appreciated by someone I know with a brain injury, something he can handle and manipulate without hurting anything/anyone!). THANKS AGAIN!!

I think these are much easier to crochet than the amish puzzle ball. I just spent a few hours writing out the directions. Now putting together, well we will see. These are so very cute. Can't wait to start them!!!

I really and truly appreciate you sharing this pattern. It looks amazing. I am in the process of making it. I have made my 1st piece and as expected it did not come out as clean as I wanted it, I have unraveled so many times and there are times where it seems I am following the instructions well. But then I would count, for example 8 sc, but then end up with 3 or 4 st left. So that's when I have to unravel and start from the beginning. Although this is not the problem I kind of wished you notified in your description where to place the crochet hook either in the back loop, front or both that way those that might not want to watch the video and have a better chance at reading the pattern will have a better outcome. But then again anyone could write the note down. But I would like to thank you overall for explaining it very well and for sharing this pattern for all crocheters to take part in making this cool project.

Can’t do it. I have frogged the first stage oval so many times, then I thought I had it (with the help of numerous stitch markers), but had 2 stitches too many on the first decrease round. I’m not a beginner, but this has defeated me 😅

I had a problem with pattern. In the video he says 11 sc down the side. My stitches weren't matching the video. I then went and read the pattern. But that confused me to. Instead of 11 stitches down the side. It said 10 stitches. In the video he is clear. But over and over my stitches just didn't match. And I didn't finish the project.

I am so very confused by this pattern. In round 2, you say to sc in the same stitch as you joined... and sc across, which should leave you at making number 12 in the chain stitch. But I always end up putting number 11 in the chain stitch. No matter what I do, I can't get 12 there. I have pulled everything out and re started 20 times now. Every time I follow exactly what you do in the video. Help?

Same here. He starts with 10 stitches on each side of the first round, and doesn't add augmentations for the 2nd, except for the chain space, but there's none at the beginning, unless you count the chain 1 as one stitch, which he says in the video to don't. It's unclear 🤷🏼‍♀️

When you are doing the second set of 8 half double crotchets are you going through the top 2 loops of the chain like you did on the first side or just one loop?

    • @croutoncrafts
      @croutoncrafts  9 років тому

Rachel Lewis Just one loop. Chains only have 3 loops and the first side uses 2 so the other side can only use one. Hope that makes sense.
