  • For my 40th birthday I treated myself to the Schnitz-und Bildhauerschule Geisler-Moroder wood carving school in Austria. I had a blast, and learned a great deal! I hope you enjoy this video of my one week trip, get inspired and learn a little as well.

    Ooooh, this video warms my heart ! Even though filmed already in 2016, I feel at home rightaway :)
    For over 30 years we went on snow vacation in Elbigenalp, our appartment was only 100 meters further from the Geisler-Moroder shop. I'm also hoping that one day, I will be able to follow their carving classes, but the ones on carving nativity scenes ( I collect them)

      Hi thank you for the nice comment! Wow it’s a small world ! I hope you are able to return and take a workshop at this wonderful school ! Also, the nativity scenes are beautifully carved.

    Down the line stick carving is probably the best carving discipline if you want to get proportions correct! Photos or a carved copy of your subject is a tremendous plus!

    You better still be carving! Subbed! Thought i was already, but i subbed now... caving like this is more about discipline than anything. I figured they had Soul Food in Austria! Way to go Mr 'S'....

    Excellent video. You lot are a talented bunch... I'm glad I didn't sign up for that class. I'll wait until there's a class for 6 year olds.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

    Hi ,nice video, looks like they don't fool around, I am amazed how fast he did that face, I noticed he used a straight no 1 tool , looked like 1 1/2 wide or 40 mm, Is that what you prefer to rough out or would a no 3 also work? Do they use any pheil tools or just stubia? Thanks 😊

      @MisterSplinters  Рік тому

      Hi, sorry for the delayed reply! Thanks for the nice comment. Yes, if I remember correctly the instructor used a #1 but a pfeil #2 or even #3 would also work because you are roughing out the face (removing excess wood) the school did not use pfeil, if I remember correctly it was stubia. Plan on returning for my 50th birthday at the end of 2023 so I can always confirm the tools that they use if you send me your email address. Hope you have a great weekend! Joe. Very cool video thank you. I wish I could afford the opportunity to do something like that. Maybe when the kids are out of the house. As for now, I get to carve under some local carvers that have a lot of experience.

    I hate to ask, but that I must. Roughly what did the week trip cost you and what is the cost of the school. Thanks in advance. You are really fortunate to learn from such masters.

      Hi Ron, airfare was around $1,200 taxi service from airport to school was around $90- the course, room and three meals per day for the one week course was around $1,200. Then taxi service back to the airport is another $90-. This was 5 years ago so prices change. Hope this helps. It's worth saving up and attending. Regards, Joe
