Crazy family stories Yannis. My grandfather lived through it too in Greece just like your mom. Due to extreme famine he stole a couple loaves of bread from the Nazi's and they tried to gun him down. He was fast and survived or else I wouldn't be here to leave this comment right now, WILD!!!!
Boys, as a seasoned member of the matriarchy, I figured going this far back might result in a less refined form of HH. But make no mistake this episode delivered handsomely. And not just because you two are cuties. I'm not sure if it's because Yannis is so passionate about the topic or what, but this ep had me laughing my ass off start to finish WHILE also learning some interesting things about ww2 that I didn't know. I like when yall fruitcakes delve into some actual history.
As a proud Maltese I can confidently and proudly say the Nazis did not take Malta, we endured and overcame constant bombings. This was one of the reasons Nazis didn't control North Africa and win the war. Love the podcast guys it's great!
6:39 coming back and listening to Chrissy talk about how he hates Kobe and how god needs to take him down a notch is hilarious because Chrissy put the kids of death on the KOBSTER and i’m fucking hear for it YAS
My grandmother's family is from maleme, the stories from there are insane. If you go near to the maleme US airforce base, theres a bridge over the river tavronitis that the nazis constructed, complete with bullet holes from the battle. Rep the cretans - the story and its impact - as my boys Yiannis and Chris have done here. Theres tons more stories too, like how the cretan shepherds kidnapped a colonel and stuff and held him to ransom. So facinating. The battle of crete was so instrumental in WW2 - it really needs more light shedding on it.
Just a heads up, Germany got involved in Greece because of the Italian losses and the prospect of Great Britain opening up a southern front against the Germans. Greece and Germany tried to keep war from breaking out because of Hitler's oncoming operation in Russia and his lack in interest in the region and respect for the Greeks, and the Greeks weren't looking for more war but they couldn't stop the war from happening because Italy was getting wrecked (some scholars believe the Italian people weren't really backing Mussolini contributing to high losses and poor combat effectiveness vs how Italians fought against the Nazis) and Hitler was nervous that the Greeks would side up with the British so Hitler declared war and inevitably the UK came to the Greeks aid. That's not to say the inhabitants weren't effective, so much so that when combat broke out between the Communist guerillas and the monarchist guerillas the Russians piped in and told the Communist to cut it out and stop fighting their fellow Greeks. And thats in addition to British and American spy agencies setting up operations in crete to wreck the Nazis.
I wish every episode was about Greece so we can actually hear about history thoroughly for once this episode was what I wished every episode was like...this show would be 10x better with more history talk
We all want to think we would be fighting. Just like alot of people think that if they were German citizens they would have been trying to stop Hitler. Fact is, most people probably wouldn't.
Shout out to the people of crete fighting with my country and the Aussie its true we lost the airport but we bayonet charged over 20 times trying to take it back sad thing is there was only like 5 tanks on the island
Also FYI Yannis you might be interested to hear that Kurt Student was sentenced to only 5 yrs prison (convicted for mistreatment/murder in Crete, but not kondomaris). And was released after only a couple years due to medical issues (yet lived until 1978). 🤦♂️
im greek and i have to say we love italians we had a war but italians , for greeks ,are the only cousin we got for italians we are not the have cousins from the side of their mother side the other romance ppl :P but we got only italy and its fucked up because the only reason we dont speak a romance language is because greek was the only accepted language other than latin in the roman empire
Should have got your family members on here to tell the stories or write them down or record them. I understand it could be painful to talk about but all the people that were actually there are getting far and few between.
And imagine today you have German tourists all over Greece + the German-run EU taxing the life out of Greece and saying they should sell their islands to them
@@panthersprung5161 it's the demeaning simultaneous combination of economic domination: (conspicuous) touristic consumption, imperialistic government policy and austerity.
