I was his ‘sanctuary’, his place of encouragement, acceptance & love, and yet he still goes home to the family and situation where he has felt unloved and unwanted for half of his life. We had such joy together. But sometimes all of that is not enough to break a pattern or a comfort zone.

This resonates for sure! I set boundaries after he decided that he would rather be controlled by his sister than be happy (his ex-wife is mixed in there too). He knows he did me dirty, that was his plan from the get-go. The whole time he deceived me, gave me the false impression that we had a future together. He lied, breadcrumbed, ghosted, and he cheated. He was only interested in everything I owned, except the love I had for him. He liked that I loved him, but he wouldn't reciprocate, telling me he was busy with work, while he was getting his needs met by his third parties. I catered to all his needs, and he wanted to have his cake and eat it, too. He wanted all I had but he wouldn't give anything back. He wanted what he wanted and he would take it and leave right away.
Apparently he saw me as a "service provider" to him. He wasn't sorry at all for what he had done, he was sorry that he got caught.
I told him I forgave him and I walked away.
Ever since then he is stalking me and he probably feels guilty for what he had done.
