You English folk seem to tow awfully light weight trailers. I suppose the "camping and caravanning club" caters to small rigs and your "tow car" awards seldom feature larger SUV's. That being said, and knowing your intended audience, I can see why you had a good, but rather lukewarm review of the Touareg. Here's the real deal from us blokes across the pond - size matters ( and so does towing capacity)! Not a single vehicle you mention in this review, or any in your "tow car" competition, come anywhere close to the 7700 lb. towing capacity and 616 lb. max. tongue weight of the Touareg (especially the tdi versions). Most fully loaded large travel trailers will quite easily exceed the safe GVWR of 99.9% of the non-pickup truck vehicles you review. What's that 0.1% that can handle it safely ?... the Touareg TDI.
Can all Touaregs tow up to around 7700 pounds? It looks like the non diesel models tow as well, anyone have some insight to the disadvantages on those models?

non-diesels have much less torque, unless you're looking at the V8, which comes close (torque is, essentially, pulling power)
The simple answer is yes but only with factory tow package. Aftermarket class 3 tow hitches are often limited to 6000lbs here in the US. So double check everything especially if you bought the Touareg used (it may not be a factory hitch/tow bar) before towing the max. rating.

what is the weight of the trailer?
LIGHT as hell, because it's NOT North America. He said just over 1400kg, which would be times 2.2. Only 3080 pounds... My toy hauler is 6500 pounds loaded. No problems with the Touareg TDI.
