Metallica’s “One”, was based off a true story. About a young man who was drafted out to war in WWI. Whilst fighting, he landed on a land mine, which reaped him of his ability to walk, talk, hear, see, smell, taste, speak of feel. He was trapped in his own mind. Coming from a drummer, using a double bass pedal is a whole mental obstacle in itself. It takes so much time to train you hands and feet to work in tandem.
"War Pigs" was on Sabbath's 2nd album, released in 1970 during Vietnam. Biting criticism of war-mongers then & throughout the ages. My personal favorite is the first song on their self-titled first album (song title is also Black Sabbath). Starts with rain, a distant church bell, and a creepy atmosphere that scared me when I was a kid, but in a good (Halloween-y) way!
That is one powerhouse of a trio you put together. I wish all music was this good. It spoils you, as most music can't hold a candle to it. Too bad you don't know about the drug addiction theme in The Master of Puppets video, it makes the song more impactful, but then who does really, when they first hear it.. That's something you usually learn later.
'Master of Puppets' is a song about drug addiction. It's mostly written from the point of view of the drug, the master, controlling the addict, puppet. There is a shorter bit after the interlude where the addict is complaining how the master did not fill the promises given, and how he needs a fix.
The first song, "One" is based on a screenplay made about a book called "Johnny Got his Gun". It's one of the strongest Anti-War novels ever made. It's about a young man who had most of his body destroyed by a landmine, His arms, legs, most of his face and part of his brain were blasted away, and the only things keeping him "Alive" are machines. He cannot move, see, feel, smell, hear, talk, or think clearly, and he wants to die. The military won't let him die though, because then his body would have to go on public record, which might damage the public's opinion of the war. So they leave him, a tortured soul in the most horrific existence imaginable, unable to even die, because showing mercy to him might do some slight damage to their war machine.
Correction, they wanted to use the clips for the music video. So after balancing the cost of paying royalties to use said clips, against buying the rights to the whole movie. Metallica bought the rights to the black n white film, saving the band a big pile of cash. The song is about the horrors of the casualties of war, trapped in a body that cannot move or speak and hurts beyond imagining.
When I was in 12th grade, my English class read the book Johnny Got His Gun. The movie was too gory for school so we couldn't watch it, but thanks to my favorite metal band for using parts of it in their video, we were able to watch One in class. I absolutely loved that day. Mr. B. is my favorite teacher!
Loved your reaction to all three of these songs. My brother and I used to have to leave the house and ride around to listen to Black Sabbath because our mom would not allow it in her house, seriously. We had a 8 track tape player in the car so we did alot of riding😁😁😁😁
We Come from the land of ice and snow from the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow. The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands to fight the horde, and sing and cry Valhalla, I am coming!
Master selections my friend. FANTASTIC! Btw War Pigs... wasn't necessarily against the military. It's directed more towards the evil politicans. The ones that use war, the people and the military as "pawns in chess" to meet their political goals. Great reactions btw. I mean seriously this was epic!!! Also Master of Puppets is a warning against drugs... I was confused when I first heard it I thought it was promoting drugs but its about not becoming a puppet with a master controlling you. So glad you did a lyric version.
I agree it's about the politics of war not those who serve or served. Sometimes noses should be kept out of others business unless it is banging on our door
Master of Puppets is about drug abuse, but it's sung from the point of the view of the drugs (the master). The addict gets a section, too, when he asks "Master, where are the dreams that I've been after?" and then yells "FIX ME!" Then the master reasserts itself at the end. All 3 of these songs are masterfully done.
Metallica is the master of transitions. Black Sabbath considered the grandfather of metal. Metallica has a song from 2016 called Spit Out The Bone that shows they are even better now. Orion is a great instrumental by Metallica that will take you on an emotional journey. Ozzy Osborn’s vocals on war pigs made me an instant fan from the first time I heard it in the 70’s. Killer songs and reactions. Still waiting for Stevie Ray Vaughn 👍👍👍
Black Sabbath isnt considered the grandfather of metal, they're a rock band. However Ozzy Osbourne the lead singer has the title of 'The Prince of Darkness'.
You need to research Metallica lyrics before your reactions..they have deep meaning..next react to 'Fade to Black' (its about suicide) then 'Sanitarium' (its about mental illness)..they have many more to choose from
@@NorwayAdversary Really? Most of the lyrics on the last, like 5 or 6 albums, are just strung together lyrics that often seem like the rantings of a poor mans Holden Caulfield. The two or three decent songs, like Unforgiven, get re-tread over and over. None of the deeper messages in their early stuff, Hetfield and Ulrich(who are the only people who write anything now) are whiney douche bags now.
@@ididthisonpulpous6526 you need to listen more to the songs then. Or google the lyrics meaning. "Moth into flame", from their last album, is partly inspired by the death of Amy Whinehouse. Kirk helped on the lyrics on several albums as well as by other people. So you where wrong, sir.
I been listening to Metallica since i was a young boy back in 1983,and the last concert i attended was in 2014 , i never ever grow tired of theyre music! Absolutly the Greatest of them All !
At least One is the actual video for the song. It's meant to be like that. That Black Sabbath video is just some crap someone put together that now everyone seems to think is the official video. It's everywhere.
Robert Reichle The video for One ruins the song for me, luckily I buy music so Lars is happy. This is the first time I’m seeing War Pigs with this video (again, I buy music) but I don’t hate it at all. It’s very well done. But for people to think it’s the music video is strange based on when the actual song is from.
There's a lot of rock/metal that's just headbanging for the sake of headbanging but there's also a lot of rock/metal that have meaning and you picked three songs that have meaning. "One" is about war and the devastation it causes..."War Pigs" is a protest song against war and "Master of Puppets" is about drug use and how they control you. I love Metallica cuz a lot of songs I relate to...I used drugs for 6-7yrs and absolutely relate to "Master of Puppets"...by the grace of God I now have 23yrs clean and sober!!! This was an awesome reaction video cuz watching your joy of discovering these songs takes me back 30+ years ago when I discovered them!!! I don't know if you have or not but please react to "Fade To Black" and "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica and "Road To Nowhere" by Ozzy. I hate the fact that this video has become the chosen video for reactors doing War Pigs. It has absolutely nothing to do with Black Sabbath or the song. It distracts from the greatness of the song! You did better than the other reactors I have seen on keeping focused on the song, not the fan made video.
Yeah quite annoying! And has its distracting stuff too right at my favorite most dark provacative lyrics: "Begging Mercy for their sins... Satan laughing spreads his wings... Oh Lord yeah!"
I know this vid is old but ild like to know you revisited One and MOP just you being new to that way of hearing a story was sooo much to take in all at once. A great story of ONE and another of addiction. Ild like to see a remake/update? You missed the story for all three on this one. Mad luvs!!
"Are the best guitarists in rock bands?" Me:... Yah, mostly. To be more specific. Rock and especially metal is were you find alot of guitar solos, and so thats were you see them flex more. Its not that guitarists in other genres are not as good, just that you always see a metal guitarist at there best.
Dude, you are freakin' awesome! I love how open-minded you are regarding "new" music and how you respect the instruments and the artists that kill them. Once you burn through metal, ask your subs for some classic rock ideas. Liked AND subscribed!

You said you like songs that "Rage Against...". You have to do an episode on Rage Against the Machine. They mix elements of rock/metal with elements of Hip-hop and always have a very political message. If you haven't heard them, you owe it to yourself to check them out sooner than later. I'd suggest the following tracks. Bombtrack Fistful of Steel Sleep now in the Fire They have tons of other great tracks, these are just a few of my favorites.
FINALLY! Someone who doesn't just go "Killing in the Name, Killing in the Name!" or alternatively "Know Your Enemy!" I'd like to see someone do Settle For Nothing, Take the Power Back or Freedom.
I like your reactions alot bro keep it coming. Also LOVE seeing brothas who grew up on hip-hop thinking rock is just "noise" open their minds and give metal a chance. Ppl gotta be more open minded. Shout out to u
Please check out System of a Down - BYOB And some other tracks from them maybe look up with they about too. they deep with amazing vocals and instruments
I agree with you my man. That's what makes bands like Metallica great. They're not just rockers, they're poets and composers. I've heard the song "One" so many times I take it for granted but seeing you react to it really put a smile on my face. I forget sometimes how extraordinary my favorite band is.
One: soldier in a vegetative state, "I cannot live, I cannot die" War pigs: anti-war song "politicians hide... why should they go out to fight they leave it for the poor." Master of puppets: drugs/cocaine. "I will occupy, I will help you die, I will run thu u, now I rule u too... obey your master ".
Having graduated 30 years ago, this was the music I grew up on....Heavy Metal, Hair bands, LL Cool J, Grand Master, etc.... Music was much different then, but it seemed everyone had a message. The music of the 60's - 80's was a different kind of music. Loved Metallica.....
Yo bro, the song Master of Puppets is all about drug addiction. The lyrics is about how a drug would speak to an addicted person, I bet the "chop your breakfast on the mirror" and "taste me" would make more sense to you now. I like your reactions, I have watched most of your rugby videos, I'm from South-Africa and played rugby for a couple of years. Anyway, have a good one..
Master of Puppets is about drug addiction and what it possesses a person to do. The slow down middle part is the addict getting his fix and then it wears off back into the rage imo. I have over 50 Metallica songs on my playlist, still incomplete, and all are bangers. You can pick any songs off their albums "Kill Em All" , "Ride the Lighting", "Master Of Puppets", "The $5.98 Ep," & their self titled Black album and its gold. ....And Justice for All was the first album I hit FF on a song. Also the first album Cliff Burton (RIP) was not on. He was the best musician of the group and died in a tragic bus accident while on tour. If you do his "Pulling Teeth" bass solo, the live performance in Chicago from 1983 is way better than the album version and gives you the chance to see greatness in action. Like seeing Freddy Mercury perform Somebody to Love live. He plays the bass like Hendrix did a guitar. Cliff Em All. ua-cam.com/video/2kdUJ5NAnTc/v-deo.html I recommend the album versions of all their other songs. Great song trio btw. Three of my ATF's.
War Pigs, the first cut from the album Paranoid, came out when I was just turning 13. All the early Black Sabbath albums helped form my musical tastes when it comes to the musicianship and song writing abilities of myriad bands. I will turn 62 this year and Sabbath still elicits the same gut reaction I had back then. I feel lucky to have that.
Thank you for branching out. This is exactly how many of us felt listening to rap and hiphop, jazz, disco, funk, bluegrass, classical, psychedelia...getting to know other people and cultures, people of a different skin, a different vibe. It's so good to see the message of these classic songs breaking barriers. So much good music. So many ways to come together. ..to find out we're not so different after all. Food, nature, music, love. Never forget.
Two of my FAVORITE rock bands. I have seen live Metallica four times, and Ozzy used to do OZZFEST which was a rock gathering, an all day event with an average of three stages and 20 to 30 bands. I went to that like 8 years in a row...saw soo many good acts. Ozzy literally would try and talk to the crowd....good GOD you couldn't understand him half the time...but as soon as he started singing it was clear as a bell!!! Glad that two of those years Black Sabbath came back together, man it was so good.
By the way, Metallica are huge fans of.... QUEEN! Do this for a reaction : “Stone Cold Crazy” -Queen and “Stone Cold Crazy”- Metallica’s cover. And... James Hetfield OF Metallica doing the song *with* Queen for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
The Matthews Fam I know, doll... I was thinking more along the lines of a “three-fer” reaction, but I understand if you don’t want to repeat Queen’s version.
The video for ONE is filled with imagery from the movie "Johnny Got His Gun". Great song back in the day but like "Seek and Destroy" it is becoming Metallica's "Stairway To Heaven". "War Pig's" soon to be Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" - get it ?
The master of puppets is a song about drug use from the drugs perspective, like “taste me you will see, more is all you need” is talking about addiction and other lyrics are the same.
Three of the greatest rock/metal songs of all time all in one reaction! Well done my friend!!! And yes, many people stereotype music, food, cultures, and obviously people. We should never judge a book by it's cover. Give things a chance. Give people a chance. We were all created equal. Let's leave the judging up to the heavens! Keep doing your thing! Love your reactions!
There is no bad music to be honest. There are diamonds everywhere from electric music to hip-hop to death/black metal. However there are also a lot of crap.

First off i just wanted to say thank you for actually sitting through the riffs and basking in the awesomeness. I was raised on this stuff and it really took me back. The only video you should've watched was "One". That's a perfect video for your first listen, but the "War Pigs" video is a fan made video, and had nothing to do with the song. And "Master Of Puppets" is about cocaine abuse. Great song selections tho. I do love these 3 in 1 videos too.
NOOOOOOOO! You fell into the trap of using that horrendous fan made video for the Black Sabbath video. That video has nothing to do with what that song is really saying. I hate that video so much. Just turn that off and listen to the music, it's so distracting and has nothing to do with Black Sabbath. So sad that so many people are using that video to listen to one of the greatest heavy metal songs for the first time. They end up reacting to the video instead of the song.
Randy Ward I didn’t read through the comments and I just said damn near everything you said, lol. Agree with you completely, it usually ends up being a reaction to the well made but totally irrelevant video.
I agree. That video is a bit confusing AND distracting. I have seen about every War Pigs reaction video and i also cringe when i see this particular video being used. That video takes away the experience of an amazing song.
I feel the same way. I think the video is actually fan made for the song. It’s very clever in its own but really doesn’t match the song at all. It bums me out that most people think it’s the official video, and they miss the message of the song.
Black Sabbaht's War Pigs video is one of the WORST videos ever made for a song. You are taking a 1970's "Vietnam Protest Song" and using images of a 1984 theme, some 20+ years after the song first came out without showing ANY footage of the band, NOR any footage of how that band influenced an entire generation of musicians. This is what happens when someone wants to be "artistic" but who have no real "connection" to the band/song itself. You get pretentious BS music videos like this one. Could have EASILY been made with stock footage of Vietnam War to drive the point home more effective than what you can see in this video.

Welcome to world of Metal. Most creative and awesome music (and people).😁
The first song, "One" is based on a screenplay made about a book called "Johnny Got his Gun".
Necrobadger such a depressing book.
@@johnnyb6067 The clips in the music video is actually the movie of the book (Metallica bought the rights to it). It is a fantastic movie, as well.
I even have the movie and have never watched it, looks so depressing.
I DEFINITELY recommend checking out Master Of Puppets live in Manchester. They played in the pouring rain. =)
I know right. It was precious and bad ass at the same time lol.
Master of puppets is about being addicted to drugs and how once your hooked it becomes your master.
True Facts Fam.
Correct, but it could be many things to someone.
I tought it was about Pinocchio...my childhood is broken. :(
@@OursK85 lmao 😂 did you really think that?
@@Sinnbad21 Nah it was for the joke
When I was in 12th grade, my English class read the book Johnny Got His Gun. The movie was too gory for school so we couldn't watch it, but thanks to my favorite metal band for using parts of it in their video, we were able to watch One in class. I absolutely loved that day. Mr. B. is my favorite teacher!
Loved your reaction to all three of these songs. My brother and I used to have to leave the house and ride around to listen to Black Sabbath because our mom would not allow it in her house, seriously. We had a 8 track tape player in the car so we did alot of riding😁😁😁😁
I like how your reactions are genuine and not rehersed before hand love this channel
Metallica " Enter Sandman " is one you should definitely review! And Led Zeppelin " Immigrant Song ".
Disposable Heros, Sad but True

We Come from the land of ice and snow from the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow. The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands to fight the horde, and sing and cry Valhalla, I am coming!

Better stairway to heaven, kashmir
Black Sabbath - War Pigs was released in 1970 on the album Paranoid
great album
@@eileenbaran7040 👍🏻💕
Sounds like somebody's in love with a soldier.
@@twr412 - Lol.
"New level respect for drummers" thanks, bro. You earned my suspriction to the TMG Family
Roy Temple Stevie Ray jams for sure!
Black Sabbath isnt considered the grandfather of metal, they're a rock band. However Ozzy Osbourne the lead singer has the title of 'The Prince of Darkness'.
You are the reason i watch reaction videos! Seeing you discover new music breathes life into this ol white lady from South Alabama
Nice picks man. It was cool watching you react to Metallica knowing black Sabbath is next. Only fitting to hear the student before the master! ☮️
Now react to "FADE TO BLACK" by metallica, Its a hauntingly beautiful song about suicide.
For Whom The Bell Tolls is another great song
You need to research Metallica lyrics before your reactions..they have deep meaning..next react to 'Fade to Black' (its about suicide) then 'Sanitarium' (its about mental illness)..they have many more to choose from
Literally any song, but sanitarium is absolutely awesome.
Metallica DID have deeper lyrics... I would say that ended about 30 years ago... They just string together strings of nonsense since than.
@@ididthisonpulpous6526 that`s where you are wrong, sir. Metallica have deep meanings still. =)
Oh gpd why is it always that damn fan vid for War Pigs? It always distracts and confuses people.
Same with One. I love the video, hate the movie dub into the music
@@soakedbearrd I agree about the One video. The visuals are good but the dialogue is distracting.
At least One is the actual video for the song. It's meant to be like that. That Black Sabbath video is just some crap someone put together that now everyone seems to think is the official video. It's everywhere.
@@robertreichle1 haha right!? I've seen people reactions thinking this is the official music video too.
Each of these songs have been in my rotation for 20+ years.
Masterpieces all.
Also if you're into drummers check out Neil Peart from Rush...he's an octopus on steroids!!! I've been to hundreds of concerts and he is hands down the best drummer I have ever seen!!! I hope that you have a wonderful and blessed day my friend!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 🐧🐧🐧🐧

@@sixnohitkee8281 Thank you so much!!! I hope that you have a wonderful day and my friend!!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 🐧🐧🐧🐧
I've gotta 2nd the motion for him to check out Neil Peart! An amazing drummer (though I think percussionist is a better descriptor) and the lyrics of Rush's music is also just incredible.
It cool to see someone who gets the messages that the bands I grew up with in the 70-80-90- hope you in joy I’m 57 and still enjoying all the different styles of music that catches my soul
And has its distracting stuff too right at my favorite most dark provacative lyrics:
"Begging Mercy for their sins...
Satan laughing spreads his wings...
Oh Lord yeah!"
One - Metallica is one of the top guitar solo songs. Absolutely love any type of rock music.
I know this vid is old but ild like to know you revisited One and MOP just you being new to that way of hearing a story was sooo much to take in all at once. A great story of ONE and another of addiction. Ild like to see a remake/update? You missed the story for all three on this one. Mad luvs!!
You gotta do "Fade To Black". Definitely one Metallica's best.
Watching you start to feel the music on this was awesome!
"Are the best guitarists in rock bands?"
Me:... Yah, mostly.
To be more specific. Rock and especially metal is were you find alot of guitar solos, and so thats were you see them flex more.
Its not that guitarists in other genres are not as good, just that you always see a metal guitarist at there best.
@Ah Yes, that's basically my point.
your audio sounds like my copied cassette tape back in 1995. I love it!
Dude, you are freakin' awesome! I love how open-minded you are regarding "new" music and how you respect the instruments and the artists that kill them.
Once you burn through metal, ask your subs for some classic rock ideas. Liked AND subscribed!
Yeah back in the day I remember getting the tapes and the CDs hey that used to have the lyrics on the back of of the packaging or book or pamphlet or something now we got the internet lol😀😀
Bombtrack
Fistful of Steel
Sleep now in the Fire
They have tons of other great tracks, these are just a few of my favorites.
Dude Zack de la Rocha can spit with the best of them. Highly underrated

I agree with you my man. That's what makes bands like Metallica great. They're not just rockers, they're poets and composers. I've heard the song "One" so many times I take it for granted but seeing you react to it really put a smile on my face. I forget sometimes how extraordinary my favorite band is.

ive been a metallica fan since 1990,, still rocking it,seeing them again oct 20 in adelaide south australia!!
One: soldier in a vegetative state, "I cannot live, I cannot die"
War pigs: anti-war song "politicians hide... why should they go out to fight they leave it for the poor."
Master of puppets: drugs/cocaine.
Great group of songs. The message in all these songs will put your mind and heart in another place.
Cliff Em All. ua-cam.com/video/2kdUJ5NAnTc/v-deo.html
I recommend the album versions of all their other songs.
Master of puppets is about drug addiction! On how drugs can take control over you....
If i wasnt already subbed, the three songs in this video would definitely do it for me.
QUEEN!
Do this for a reaction : “Stone Cold Crazy” -Queen and
“Stone Cold Crazy”- Metallica’s cover.
And... James Hetfield OF Metallica doing the song *with* Queen for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
I've done queen stone cold crazy already
The Matthews Fam I know, doll... I was thinking more along the lines of a “three-fer” reaction, but I understand if you don’t want to repeat Queen’s version.
I def want to hear metallica's cover though for sure
Did you do the live version for Queen? If not, try the Houston one, fast and raw.
Metallica Fade to Black, Seek and Destroy, ANY song from Ride the Lightning album, Trapped Under Ice, Sanitarium, Battery, Blackened.
The master of puppets is a song about drug use from the drugs perspective, like “taste me you will see, more is all you need” is talking about addiction and other lyrics are the same.
Answer to your question. Yes all the best guitarist are in rock/metal

There's plenty of bad music. Rap isn't really music in my book.
@@jpturner9452 You're saying this on the video of a rap listener who took the time to broaden his horizons and listen to some metal. You're an embarrassment to rock and metal listeners for being so close minded. Hip-hop is music, deal with it.

It bums me out that most people think it’s the official video, and they miss the message of the song.
came down to say this same thing, thanks for saving me the time
As soon as I saw the vid in the thumbnail I said to myself "fuck" I wish they would just watch lyric videos
My son's first concert was Black Sabbath when he was 5 years old. He went to Metallica last year and Slipknot 2 weeks ago. He loves metal.
I appreciate your reaction! It’s really awesome to see stereotypes and walls being torn down a song at a time !from all different people!
