Despite our intentions, why do we so often fail to act in our own best interest? Why do we promise to skip the chocolate cake, only to find ourselves drooling our way into temptation when the dessert tray rolls around? Why do we overvalue things that we’ve worked to put together? What are the forces that influence our behavior? Dan Ariely, James B. Duke Professor of Psychology & Behavioral Economics at Duke University, is dedicated to answering these questions and others in order to help people live more sensible - if not rational - lives. His interests span a wide range of
behaviors, and his sometimes unusual experiments are consistently interesting, amusing and informative, demonstrating profound ideas that fly in the face of common wisdom.
He is a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight, co-creator of the film documentary (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies, and a three-time New York Times bestselling author. His books include Predictably Irrational, The Upside of Irrationality, The Honest Truth About Dishonesty, Irrationally Yours, Payoff and Dollars and Sense.
In 2013 Bloomberg recognized Dan as one of Top 50 Most Influential thinkers.

I feel like trust is the most important thing ever. There is a sense of comfort when you know that there are people in your life that will always be there to say “I’ve got you”

Reputations
Revenge (fear of revenge) = altruism (ensure cooperation in the future)
Show them we are willing to care and be vulnerable (embarrassing stories, the waiter recommend cheaper+better option)

This is the most interesting video I have seen on UA-cam so far.
We're not social animals because we like it we're social because it was necessary to survive in order to be able to interact with others in a world where every other species is infinitely better prepared to live in its natural environment than we are without the cooperation of others. It's our favorite and best tool and our key to success and we just must get it back if we ever hope to move forward again because until then we're not standing still we're actually moving backwards
Such an important topic. Trust has been declining in the US since the 1870s. It went up after the great depression, but has declined steadily since. Individualism has destroyed trust. Lack of trust produces paranoia, and conspirisy thinking. Interestingly, trust is high in collectivistic countries, and especially in the Nordic countries. They have greater wealth, more time off of work, free education and healthcare, and much higher wellbeing. Cynicism, is having very little trust. Beimg cynical is distasterous for ones health, according to the research. Therefore, it is no surprise that life expectancy is declining in the US, and increasing almost everywhere else.
It doesn't sound like you've been to Europe.

Trust much like respect is earned and not owed and typically you have to be willing to give it in order to get it so it's not an entitlement you get for existing for many years in the case of respect so I think leading by example is key and in the case of trust when there's hesitation on both sides a leap of faith might be required before reciprocation can occur
My experience in life has been the complete opposite which is very sad
Knowing one's true nature
trust is sacred the most sacred of sacred things.
In the distant past when things were very different and we lived as we have for 90%+ of the time we've been around it was easier because of transparency and accountability living in small groups where you are only ever going to know 50 people knew them intimately and were closely related and you relied on each one of them and their cooperation to survive. There was no privacy and I'm sure very little modesty when we lived in communal dwellings and very little secrets, lies, or deception because if you were expelled from the group because of a breach of trust that was like a death sentence as you wouldn't last long on your own.
I think people that want to be trusted, act trustworthy. No one trusts someone lying to them. No one trusts someone giving them a hard time. No one trusts people that talk about them or spread their business. No one trusts someone who can't be there for them. No one trusts someone who doesn't have time for you.... TRUST is created through connection and respect. I know I don't !!!!
There's only one solution to build trust. Honesty.

The snake in the movie represents those who abuse the meaning the trust. Trust is all of the things the snake says but of course sadly there are those who twist it for bad actions.

Trust is such an important topic but this video wasn't really about healthy trust in relationships. It was about incentivised behaviour that mimicks trust.
