How old is too old to ride motorbikes?︱Cross Training Adventure

  • crosstrainingenduro.com tractionerag.com Sorry guys, you won't see a single dirt road in this video. If you are addicted to dirt, here is a photo to satisfy your addiction. But I suggest you watch the video anyway. This is my dad. At 86 years old, he has been riding road bikes for over sixty years. He has as soft spot for Honda Goldwings, those incredibly heavy armchairs on two wheels. My brother and I regularly make fun of it. But the fact he is still riding is inspiring. It's great to see pro riders doing their tricks. But I have always preferred to celebrate the everyday heroes in the world of motorbikes. Especially guys who keep riding into old age. Over on the enduro channel, we regularly talk about Paul Rodden. He is 80 years old and still dirt riding. A retirement home? Bugger that. He just bought a brand new dirt bike and a new van so he can ride all over north America. In Canada, I met Greg. At 72 years old, he decided it was a good time to learn how to ride a dirt bike. These guys are my role models. I recently realised my dad is the same. At 86, he is still wrestling this big pig around the roads, despite an artificial hip. He's not coping as well as he used to. He dropped my brother's Suzuki V-strom at an intersection recently because he was slightly off balance. And he actually dropped the Goldwing on this ride when trying to park it. We are trying to convince him to get a lighter bike as he isn't as strong as he used to be. His response? The usual bull headed attitude of the typical motorbike rider. "I'm fine! It was the bike's fault." Or "Gravity was unusually strong that day..." And then I realised the attitude runs in the family. When I shattered my lower leg well meaning friends said maybe it's time to stop riding. Ditto when I broke four bones in my foot a few years later. And of course, also after my recent spine fracture. Should we keep riding into old age? How old is too old? There will be no right answer for everyone. Some will opt for safety and quit riding, and there's nothing wrong with that. Others will not only keep riding, but take crazy risks. If you accept the potential consequences, and aren't putting others in danger, there's nothing wrong with that. Me? I remember the words of that famous gonzo journalist, Hunter S Thompson, who inspired many to not fade away into retirement. “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” What about you guys? Planning on riding into your 80s? Your 90s? Or will you give it away and take up bingo instead?

@@crosstrainingadventure or get him on a 3wheeler. Like a sidecar, a Spider (Can-am) or a touring bike with 2 wheel at the rear. Harley make one and there is some that convert regular motorcycle (often Goldwing). And if he want to stay on two wheel, a big scooters could be nice for him.

I did ride Activa Honda 125 automatic scooter till this year March and other scooters and cars earlier but the desire to ride a motorcycle with gears in foot has always been my wish. I do hold Indian car and motorcycle license but didn’t have a motorcycle license in Australia, although I drive a manual 4WD here since decades. So, now I did a 2 days learner course and then passed a License Assessment by overseas conversion and got full manual motorcycle license.
However, at 65+, I plan to buy a 350cc Honda in India for my visits.
CB350 Honda has caught my fancy over all other smaller or larger cc bikes

I'm 62 and started riding at 54. I thought when I first started that this is the age you'd naturally stop riding. I no longer think that. Besides your video, I know I have many years, hopefully few decades, of riding to go. I met a fellow rider a few weeks ago on his brand new Husky 501 and he was 79, but you'd really never know it by his speech or movement.

I am 56 years old, STILL YOUNG, got my motor bike license this year! My doctors and I argue all the time that I am to old to be on a bike and remind me that I also have a heart condition. I tell them I do not care, my late dad had bought me a dirt bike, a 1975 Honda mr 175 Elsinore, LOVED IT! Told them I am NOT just going to set around and do nothing the rest of my life, I AM going to get me another bike and enjoy it as much as I can!

That's due to wisdom not decrepitude. Well I'm claiming wisdom. My ideal plan is one day on a ride or a hike that I rode the bike to get to, is to find a top stop and think to myself 'this is a bloody top spot'. Sit down. Take in the view. Doze off. Fart some. I'd rather die in a crash tomorrow then spend the next 20 years moping and not doing what I love. That's been my mindset for as long as I can remember. Having recently had relatively good news about my Cancer, I bought a Himalayan for Moto-Camping trips (far less stress on the back, wrists and legs). There are days when I absolutely won’t ride because of the effects of continuing Chemotherapy but on the days I feel OK, a ride or trip makes me feel utterly refreshed. A ride in the bush has more beneficial effects than any treatment I’ve been getting (only thing is cancer / treatment has lost me 1/3 of my body weight, so I dread the thought of dropping the bike - I’d have trouble getting it back up on my own).

I am 57 and just started adventure riding, and I must say I have never crashed so much. I come from 40 years of street riding and am pretty good, rode super bikes etc.. But I just feel like my body may not be able to handle the punishment like it used to. So I may not do so much off-road riding even though I say this I can't stop taking those off-roads they can be addicting. So I am in a pickle I have a sore chest from hurting my ribs on my ride today lol. Adventure riding is awesome but I worry I took up the dirt too late because in order to learn you will crash.

You'll have a great time, Gary. Many are opting for an adventure bike in their 50s and 60s. The old dirt skills come back fast usually. All I would suggest is avoid the trap of getting one of the huge bikes, unless that is what really suits you. A lot of guys get a 900 or a 1200 then go for something much smaller within their first year back.

I can't speak to when to stop riding, but I think age is a factor. First of all, this is just my opinion based off of statistics that I can't remember and my own confirmation biases. I've heard that most fatal accidents are the younger riders and and older riders with those in the middle being much less at risk. This might be due to the younger riders being reckless, and the older riders having less agility and slower reaction speed.
There's another aspect, of the conversation that sometimes gets overlooked when we talk about rider age and responsibility. That is training and experience. I think my training wasn't perfect, but it gave me an understanding that was better than a riding buddy would've been able to communicate in a 15 minute training session. Also, there are those for whom buying a bike is a bucket list thing, but causes them to ultimately kick the bucket. I heard about a guy in Idaho whose wife finally gave him the OK to buy his dream bike, a Harley. I don't know how much training or experience he had, but he was retired and the kids were grown up. He had lived a responsible life, and taken care of the mortgage and his retirement was set. He went and bought the bike brand new, but died on the first ride. That is a shame. I don't know the details, but the fundamentals of riding would tell you to familiarize yourself with a new (to you) bike before going all full speed.
One last rant, and maybe I'm being too longwinded, but yeah. Some people shouldn't ride, at all. It's not their age, it's something less tangible about them. We had a guy show up to a training I attended that brought a helmet that looked like it had been through a clothes dryer, and he didn't bring any of the gear required by the program. He nearly tipped his bike several times, and didn't understand basic instructions. Another guy I worked with wanted to start on a liter bike to see how fast he could go down the freeway.
