Well you have expressed it so much clearer than me. In some ways karate owes it's popularity to competition & without it, who knows? It may well have withered on the vine and died. The karate world has changed forever. In the 1960's & 70's it was mainly adults who took up the art as a physical challenge. Now with so many people trying to make a dollar, the ratio of children to adults is something like 5:1 and increasing. So it makes sense that Budo isn't as popular as games/sport karate.

Are there more points for stopping longer? The divide between this and traditional karate is becoming wider & wider.

Hhhh, I see, you became yourself some kind of victim to competition karate!! :D It doesn't matter how "impressive" a jump is, the most important thing is that it is done correctly. And by all means, I can't see a single error in the Unsu performance, one of the best I saw to date, but the other one was like... "I can't believe I'm in the finals"? -.-

This comment section just shows, what a sad & respectless community traditional Karate really is :/

I just looked at this rubbish kata competition again to verify that I wasn't being unfair in my comment, and again I think it's such a poor reflection on what real karate is all about. Funakoshi Gichin would be turning in his grave. He and many karate Masters from that era warned against competition and look at it now. I think schools like Goju Ryu took the correct road and stayed well away from this complete none sense.

Bill Blinky Agree with you 100%. If you would do a kata the traditional (right) way in a competition, you would be honored with the last place.
They would call it too slow.

@@mariusgustavus6522 "Probably" it is. But I am sure, it would be a lot easier for you ("Probably","i", "am amswer", "lets").
I suggest you stay in your child's room and practice your worthless bunny hopping sport karate to make your mum proud when you earn some medals.
