    When I joined the Army in 1977, the test was Run,Dodge,Jump; Horizontal Ladder; Inverted (spider) Crawl; Sit Ups; Push Ups; and the 2 (1 mile non combat arms) mile run in combat boots. They found that running (shuffling) in boots created too many shin splint injuries. Lets see what lower back injures come from this new test.

      There shouldn't be any lower back injuries if you know how to Deadlift/squat properly.

      I was sayimg the same thing. You can prepare and train to deadlift correctly but when you have a company full of swinging dicks wanting to be the strongest MFer, They will put weight on they can't do and hurt themselves.

      The use of the hex bar for deadlifting preserves natural spinal alignment and it is much safer than a traditional deadlift.

      1970 here we refered to run dodge and jump as trip stumble and fall.

    Former Army medic. I do not see the point of this test, when considering the cost, time, and risk involved. I agree that the current APFT is pretty basic and does a bad job at seeing how ready someone is for combat. However, in my opinion, 'combat readiness' should be evaluated during combat specific training, not via a complicated APFT. Commanders should challenge soldiers in more diverse ways during training over the long run and evaluate how well they take on training challenges, as opposed to an annual APFT like this. Again, this is considering all the time, cost, and risk involved with this change. If it was simpler, I'd be on board, but I am not sure the cost is worth the reward.
    Furthermore, most soldiers do not lift weights, do crossfit, or anything dynamic on a regular basis. The chances of having bad form and getting injured during this test are very high.

      I would disagree.
      This program is significantly better than the old one. It better for strength aswell as prevents injuries by emphasizing the posture chain. This will save money from disability for back injuries.
      Hex bar dl is much safer than Olympic bar dl.
      The highest risk would be the medicine ball throw.
      Plus this only once a year.

      @Greg Ellis Its reasonable to have higher standards for combat arms, and active duty but if you're not in shape, you dont belong in the military, period. Its ridiculous that we have soldiers that look like 300 pound stuffed sausages, embarrassing.
      Its not as expensive as you would think. A bar and sled will last a life time. We save money from less disability and cutting our numbers through this PT test.

    I joined in 1980 and have severe shin splints. Very difficult to walk. However, I will tell you this I am glad and grateful for my training. I know how to drive on with or without pain. I am 57 years old and overweight working to get back into shape. When shit hits the fan I will always defend my flag. Remember your skills that all of your instructors teach you. Your instructors have been there and they know what it takes to survive. Trust them they will get you threw all of it. My platoon daddy was SSGT Williams and he and SGT Hill got me threw all of my mental, physical, and emotional frustration. Thank you SSGT Williams and SGT Hill.

    Those release pushups are brutal, plus most people will be pretty tired when you finally make it to the 2mile. Me personally I'm maxing the drag/sprint, deadlift and throw easily.

    Many junior enlisted had problems passing the original apft in the first place. Long hours with junk food and no recovery time plus the gym was banned 99% of the time and the company barbell equipment was barely enough for a fire team. Fix those things first along with providing quality CLP.

    I would agree w/anyone that the old-school pt test is not a great indicator for combat readiness. HOWEVER, it was simple, straightforward, & got the basic job done. Could it be improved - definitely. But this new set, has one MAJOR issue... it is chucked full of great exercises, WHEN DONE WITH PERFECT PROPER FORM. But that's the problem, if this is the new pt test - people will constantly try to hurry/rush to max their point totals & will end up doing most of these incorrectly. Which, most of these new skills, done incorrectly, will cause injury. There is so much room for error (resulting most likely in injuries) here.
    Also, soooooo much room for evaluator-interpretation; you did/didn't bring your legs up high enough, you're swinging too much, you didn't lift your hands enough, you're "snaking" up, you didn't extend your legs fully or stand up straight enough.... this is already bad enough w/current push-ups & situps
    And my last bitch - weight to size ratio. I can see how the moderate/significant/heavy weight minimums should apply to specific job classifications for battle-readiness. However, broad-based weight minimums don't illustrate a person's personal fitness. How they can haul their own body weight can. A general Army-wide fitness test should be on body-weight exercises; adding a job-specific combat readiness test could/should have various weight expectations & even particular exercises.
    ok, one more... this is going to take all frickin' day to get an entire unit through this test!!

      I disagree on body weight exercises. Regardless of how much someone weights, a 60 lb ammo can is a 60 lb ammo can, and it doesn't care if the person weights 230 lbs or 115. Who do you think is going to have an easier time with a 60 lb ammo can?
      The grading on this test is the same, but based on MOS you have different minimums. I like the ACFT more than the APFT, as I think it does a better job determining where someone's fitness level is at.

      APFT has interpretation problems too, and any new system you goto will have problems. Its just how it works. People will learn proper form and it will take time, but they will get there with proper training.
      The test is actually designed to limit rest time. Theres 2-5 minute rest between each event, with there being a maximum of 5 minutes rest before the run. Its an endurance test, and the test smokes you enough that many people see a 2 minute loss in their 2 mile simply because they're exhausted by the end.
      It is much harder to administrate and everyone knows that. But they think the benefits will outweigh those costs.

      So I just took the ACFT at my unit this past weekend and let me tell you, it’s easy to pass, hard as hell to max. I’m a combat arms job so I had to get the ‘black’ category. The standard for non combat arms is moderate or ‘gold’ which anyone can pass and trust me there is no way someone can injure themselves doing this test. It’s slightly modified from how you see it demonstrated here however. But as a soldier, we should be physically fit and rise to the standard. It’ll take time for the whole army to get accustomed to it and by the whole army I mean the old guys who hate to change “what’s not broken” but I assure you. This is a good test to run. Graders are efficient as it stands and they are still working some kinks out. Overall, a fantastic test of capability every soldier should readily pass.

      Trap bar deadlift
      Push up as shown here
      Pull up
      Knee raise of sometype
      Weighted carry
      Run

    a) Tying things to functional usage
    b) BIG emphasis on spinal erectors for back health
    c) BIG emphasis on ilio-psoas, hip health
    d) BIG emphasis on CONSCIOUS spinal flexion/extension
    e) Acceptance of human asymmetry (the pullup)

    This would take An entire 2 week annual training for a guard unit Just keep it simple with pushups situps and run.

      It’s two hours to push a company through...even if you lowball the efficiency of the time and say it’ll take FOUR hours, that’s half a day if you add in time for hygiene. People are wildly exaggerating the time this will take

    I feel that I'm in pretty good shape for a 51yr old with almost 30yrs of service but after reviewing this video, it looks like I need to retire. I can see all types of injuries happening and VA claims will triple.

      It's bad enough the older and heavier I got, my knees hurt more and more when we ran every day when my body isn't awake and fully stretched. They need to do it by age brackets or profiles. Maybe just one day for P.T. instead of EVERY DAMN DAY!! My unit never stuck to the PRT program, everyone young HATES mornings and running. Young people are hungover, and old people are tired because they were up all night redoing generic eval bullet points and sending them back for corrections.

      Just five lanes consists of 5 pullup bars that have to be assembled, 5 90 pound sleds, and over 2000 pounds of deadlift weights and bars.

    In the early 50s I went through jump school twice. my first jump I had a leg strap twisted, Got a rupture.. Went back after I had healed. No-you have to do Jump school all over again. I maxed the physical test that time through so they kept me there as a cadre instructor. The wind had damage the towers so school was shutdown.Went to Ft.Campbell Ky.and did it all over again.

      Pull ups are useless, let's be real and if ur going to squat then rucking is doing the same excercise twice but really squatting is useless I say push ups sit ups 3 mile ruck

      STEVEN HEMINGER after 20 years in the military I would say bench press would be more realistic than push ups. Soldiers need to be able to exert force , too many bs standards to make soldiers skinny.

    Too much specialized equipment. Screw the kettlebells, medicine balls, and deadlift bars. They should use sandbags, ammo cans, and other objects common in every field or base location.

      Pushups, Pullups, Situps and a Run are all you need maybe air squats if you want to test strength endurance in the legs. If you can exceed the standards for those you can handle yourself in whatever schoolhouse to learn more advanced techniques.

      Sit ups are not a good judge of abdominal strength. Busting out repped push ups are not a necessary movement as they dont transfer to much. Most soldiers do not run excess of two miles so the sprint is more accurate to current mission

    I love the new push-up. I do not know how many times I saw graders count the partially bent arm push-up as good. And it also gets rid of the bounce your chest or bellyof the ground push-up.

    Should have kept the old APFT, and added pull ups. This circus can be done in appropriate units. I understand the sled drag (it's a body) I get the kettle bells (hauling ammo cans). But what the hell is bending backwards, throwing a medicine ball for? Besides destroying someone's lumbar region.... And the side skippy thing? Really?

      Those are shuffle steps. I guess they're simulating battlefield movement while maintaining fire? These guys blow at it though. All muscle no agility. They're supposed to be moving faster and smoother, and lower as well. It should look as if they're doing squats while running sideways, just not going up and down. This is a fucking joke. I have done these excercises, every one of them, in my high school football program and the FNGs do better.....

    I'm not so keen on this test for several reasons. That ball throwing test in particular seems sketchy and has variables in it's execution that can fall outside of physical fitness. I think some of these tasks will change over time, we'll see how it all pans out when it's finally fully implemented in a couple years.

    I think you should have fun with it. Treat it as schoolyard games (except you play to keep your career). The sprint/drag/carry(looks like the pacer test/relay race and football drills), leg tuck (c'mon you carry your own weight and then some everyday), and 22min 2mile should be easy(thats great motivation..for me!).
    But them pushups look killer, I think that is what will screw some folks over.

    Wear and tear accumulates on the body with age. Just the natural process of aging takes its toll. Glad I am retired, though I'd really be surprised if this test is implemented as shown.

      JN Woodard Supposedly the med ball throw is to simulate helping someone over a wall or something. In the real world I don’t think your goal is to see how far over a wall you can throw someone which makes this exercise senseless.

      The medicine ball throw is a good indicator of hip and posterior chain strenght/explosivity. However, I do feel like having a Deadlift AND a medicine ball throw is a little redundant

    Guys and gals coming in the Army now will see this test become “muscle memory” about the time they retire. I know there’s been a lot of talk about changing the test in the years past. I think change and growth are good. Don’t know if I think all the events are great but I’m not a sports medicine specialist. The push up flip your wrist event, although tough and I know why you’re doing it, looks easier than it probably is. Form will be the biggest challenge. I'd be willing to bet most folks don’t grow up doing these kind of motions and exercises. This will take time to truly transform our Army.

    Yep I was just at SLC and I was the only NG one weekend warrior and I passed my PT test lol most of the class was active duty and some were AR AGR and most of them were on profile! It's not just reserves....

    Why not just gear up and run some combat operation exercises instead? Stress shoots with litter carry, ammo can walks and sprints? wouldn't that be a far closer test of combat readiness than throwing a ball behind you?

    Why don't we just how we fight? In regards to specificity, I believe testing should involve actual ammo can runs, timed rucks, a 5 mile run, pullups, situps, bench, and ammo can lifts. Sure you'll have to use two separate days on either end of the week for rest, and to prevent injury, but I think it's a better overall test that will have soldiers training better for their job.

    Excellent! I love the new test. Soldiers need to be able to lift their weight or more. They need to help their battle buddies out when injured. This makes sure they can at least carry them to safety.

    they should of added: a ruck March. pull ups. rope climb. fireman carry. low crawl. along with the pushups situps and run.

    I retired in 2017 and to me this is way too much going on 2hrs to do 1 company, you can do a battalion with that time. Granted we needed change, but this is not it.

    I was in the army from 1970 to 1972 and after leaving basic training I don't remember any fitness tests and we never did any PT at all. After morning formation we would 'police the grounds' which meant that we went around picking up all the cigarette butts.

    Everyone is bashing this test but I don't understand why. This test is supposed to be difficult. There is a chance that these people could go to combat and actually be fighting for their lives. They NEED this physical training. It could cost them their life. Everyone is saying 'when are you ever going to throw something over your head', you're not. but you need to work the muscles in your chest, arms, shoulders, and back. What if you are hanging off of like a cliff or something like Hacksaw Ridge you need those muscles to pull yourself up or even help an injured soldier. It's not about the specific exercise movement its about what muscles it works! When are you ever going to do a sit-up or push-up in combat? You aren't! That's the whole point! It's what muscles the movement works not the movement itself! Just because you want to be lazy and just do the sit-ups, push-ups, and run doesn't mean you should bash the new test.

    I was really good at all push-ups at a time, I think I would do a lot of these new ones. I guess the APFT was due for a makeover. This is interesting. I've been out a few years (8 Years) and most years I did well on APFT,
    Strong on Push-ups and Run, but my weakness with Sittups always kept me from maxing a PT Test! I see there is another Uniform too now!

    I like this new test over the push up sit up and 2mile run. Im planning on going into the army and I hope they use this for my PT. I'm a formal collegiate soccer player and we did these exercises. I'm 31 and an exercise specialist now.

    Why not just throw on body armor and carry some stuff and some squats and maybe ruck for a while. I just see training nco's going bald here

    Fitness improvement is a benefit. No one can debate that. However, it seems like there has been an inadequate mission analysis for the Army wide implementation of this sort of test. Most companies only have about 8 to 10 people max to administer PT tests. This test will extremely difficult to administer with that type of resourcing for personnel to both set-up and administer PT tests. How are FAOs in far, remote parts of the globe, supposed to take this type of PT test ? Is rocky dirt an authorized surface for event #4 ? Is 5-inch tall grass an authorized surface for event #4 ? Planning and conducting something like this for an individual or at the platoon level is superb. Logistically implementing this at the divisional level is much more difficult and complex. It seems like there are many logistical issues that have been overlooked or vastly underestimated.

    I'm an Army veteran who had to put up with the ridiculous "push ups, sit ups, two mile run" PT test for years and I always thought it was unrealistic and contributed nothing to preparing for combat....and more than once we had to put up with graders who were so extremely strict hat they would have failed Superman on the push ups.....good thing that version of the PT test is good as gone and the Army has finally, FINALLY...come up with something better and one that uses exercises that actually reflect what muscles are actually used in combat.

      They've already introduced High Physical Demands Test which is the MOS specific fitness test; this test is impractical for use Army wide. It uses more resources and heightens the likelihood of injury. It will be next to impossible for Guard and Reserve units to roll out properly, much less train for.

      People dont realise this pt test standards to pass are lowered. Makjng it easier to pass and stay in but harder to be exceptional at. Yeah you run into time issues but in all reality its only gonna take 15-20 mins more than the APFT. Me personally im looking forward to it because of the sinple fact its not just a 3 course test. Its 6 courses testing all of your muscle endurance. I was chaptered but i ship out late march. After its been applied for anywhere between 1-4 years battalions will be able to run it faster and faster after each times. For people that cant pass this test i feel sorry for.

    I'm an AGR Training NCO and I do like the test because it will be ALOT tougher to max and really separate those who are overall more physically fit. HOWEVER, this is gong to be tough to do at the unit every drill weekend. We run PT tests every drill for schools, annual record make-ups, and remedial PT failures so we HAVE to do them monthly. This is going to be very logistically challenging an require a lot of time every month. I also have to go the ACFT LVL3 to be able to certify graders. I had to go the Master Fitness Trainer prior to that, so overall this is already very taxing from a personnel stand point. Just my two cents...

      Richard Kurr I’d like to know where they plan on storing all of the equipment? Are reserve center doesn’t have room for it. Where are we going to do the shuttle run? Doubt our schools want us dragging equipment on their fields and tearing them up. We all are not active duty and don’t have the facilities. Hope they plan on purchasing land and storage buildings.

    Sorry Reserves and ANG would never have the time or resources to do this unless on Active/Mobbed status.....The upside are the new 2 mile run times, from 21-18 min depending on what unit or MOS level....

    Looks like with this, you are either in shape or your not. With the old test if you were weak in push ups or sit ups, you just practiced for a week or so prior to the APFT to be able to hit the number of repetitions you needed for a 60. This test I don't see a way to get ready on a week's notice. I could be wrong. Just have to STAY in shape all the time.

    A lot of people on here are offering their criticism but not offering constructive criticism.
    First, inevitably is cost. The new ACFT blows cost out of the water. I don’t see this as being cost efficient or effective use of DOD funds when upgrades to ordnance, heavy equipment, and other high value items should receive priority.
    The next is time. Six events will take A LOT more time than three.
    With extra time, there is more effort that is required. With those additional factors, comes FAR greater risk for injury.
    More injuries will mean a greater and legitimate claim for MEBs.
    We are already having difficulty accessing into initial entry. Recruiting resources (extra dollars) are pouring in for this very reason.
    I DO believe we can seek improvements to the current assessment. What has been done in this video looks great and makes sense based on how they compared actual combat tasks, but there is no way I can see how fielding this will ever happen.
    I’m all about making our Soldiers stronger and more lethal. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is the correct model.

    The trap bar used for deadlifts is much safer than using a barbell, this test has some similarities to the USMC CFT

    It's good that they are trying to add some Deadlifts, lateral movement, and agility to the test. Doing everything in-line, and with body weight, ignores critical movement skills and muscles. It may increase injuries, though.

    I could write a ton on why the Army moving to this new initiative to evaluate soldier's PT Readiness is a bad joke on many levels, but I will not.
    All ll I'll say is, that for those current or future Army soldier reading this who are going to have to train for and/or have to take these new PT evaluations, do yourself a HUGE FAVOR and PRINT OUT AND KEEP all the commentary you see below. Esp. for yourself highlight the discussions on known risk of injury, improper technique the majority of most folks will naturally have attempting these events , excessive training time needed to prepare, etc. Also as you continue to see in the future more stories and commentary about this in publications such as Army Times, keep those stories also. I guarantee you they will all come in very handy to you when you ETS or Retire and you submit your documentation for VA compensation for all the lower back injuries, neurological spinal, and joint (overuse) injuries that are sure to come with this new mandatory PT program.
    I am retired (after 27 yr's serving) from the military, and it was my understanding from sources well known to me in my service branch's recruiting ranks, that in an ideal perfect world, my branch would only like to recruit tall, lanky, stud runner teen athlete high school graduates (18/19 y.o) both men and women, and have them do only 6 yr's, and for officer's the same (at 22 y.o after college) and keep them only 8-10 yr's. Because it is only going to be the fittest who will be prepared and able to successfully complete this new PT test. And those type of people are ones who spend an inordinate amount of time living a "fitness lifestyle" and who are mostly living in a gym somewhere. I have no idea how most soldiers are going to be able to do/give their Army job the time it needs to do it justice, and then to also have the time to prepare, train, and sustain their fitness level for passing this new PT program. A person has to sleep sometime you know.

    I honestly feel like this is an effective test when ADMINISTERED PROPERLY. Keep in mind that these events have INCREDIBLY LOW passing standards.Too many grumpy souls on here are stuck in a traditional mindset where they can't imagine a world where it is REQUIRED to be flexible and adaptable. You people talk about how these events will cause injuries- the reason being that MANY SOLDIERS DO NOT ENGAGE THESE MUSCLE GROUPS which, in essence, is the very problem that this exam is aiming to solve!! Get out of your negative mindsets and understand that we will not always be fighting urban warfare! One of the main killers of American soldiers prior to the Gulf War was the lack of physical functionality of soldiers' "PRT" regimen. I'm only on my second contract and the reason retention is in such a decline is because LEADERS are spending too much time FINDING EXCUSES rather than rolling with the punches and BEING the change that they want. All you old cats make me depressed with your negativity. If you complain about putting in a little extra work, so will your soldiers. I am a PRT leader and I approve.

      This is a waste of time. The current PT test is simple and is quick. I don't have time for CrossFit games. As well retention is down as gwot has died down significantly. I am MFT and I find it useless. If you want to evaluate a soldier for combat that is a called a pre mission train up(PMT). Our current PT test lets me know if people have the self discipline to exercise on their own and measures their fitness

    My highest score in the old system was around high 270's, I never had a pb passing the test, but with this I don't think I could pass it... I got out 5 years ago, but i wonder if the requirement is the same for all MOS's... in a medical reserve unit, those medical officers couldn't pass the old test, I wonder how they can pass this one.

    Ok so when it was only the push ups, sit ups and the 2 mile run PT test it took about 2hrs for the whole Company... That new (I don't know what that is) is going to take the whole day, not counting all the PT profiles they're going to have

      @@billsmuscle3195 hopefully that 10 Minute Warm isn't the PRT preparation drill.... People don't need their legs hurting from the "high jumper" or their backs hurting from the "bent leg body twist" before they actually start this ill advised cross fit based new PT test...Especially in every unit I've been in where instead of doing PRT on grass, we've always done it on pavement.

    Part of the reason why we had the old APFT was that it could be done anywhere. All you needed was a 2-mile measurement, a clipboard, and a stopwatch. And while we screamed for years for the army to change that, they chose this? As others have pointed out logistics and injuries are going to be a nightmare. I'm not sure what throwing a 10 lb medicine ball is supposed to simulate but it seems I need to get into the medicine ball industry. You already know darn well soldiers don't take care of equipment like they should. At least now we'll be able to promote. However the unisex fitness test scoring has been used by law enforcement and they dumped it because it cause injuries to older Leo's which caused the retirement rate to jump as well as medical compensations. And for the Army to roll this out within the next year without having a scoring system in place seems like the DOA is jumping the gun.

    Why wouldnt they implement something similar to the Marine Corps CFT? 3 events 880m sprint, ammo can lifts and a movement under fire course. Easy and applicable to real life scenarios. The way the army created their CFT seems as if they were drawing events out of a hat. How often are you going to be side way shuffling in a combat situation or throwing a ball behind your head

    I used to be a member of a weightlifting club, and never say any barbell in a "step-in" design like they are using here. That is not a good idea. It is very important with barbells that the lifter be able to toss the barbell away from his or her body, if for any reason the lift is going wrong. That is not possible if you are "trapped" inside the barbell with this new kind of barbell. Not a good idea at all. It could result in very serious knee injuries, especially for taller and more long-legged individuals. If you want to test leg strength, use a universal machine with an adjustable seat to allow for different leg lengths, and no one will get injured. That is NOT a good barbell design. They should discontinue use of those asap.

      Biggest issue is with using machines is having enough available. But you make a fair point with the bar design. I've never dead lifted before so can't wait till I break old ass back. Or other solders trying to jurk up too much weight in an attempt to max.

    Not only is setup going to be a pain, but how long is it going to take to run a platoon, section, or God forbid a company through a ACFT?? 0400 start time?? 0300?? It already takes 1.5-2 hours to run a platoon through a 3 event PT test.

    That medicine ball stuff is reminescent of Herbert Hoover's exercise routine. In Hoover's years in office , he and his buddies through a medicine ball around almost daily in the side yard of the White House lawn. It is not easy to catch a ball flying in the air and throwing one. But if an old man like HH can do it, then a young person can do it. It is the easiest of the new Army regimen.

    marine corps have the best test of the branches in terms of basic fitness. the simpler, more core exercises are timeless. pull ups and running are great. push ups are great too if you can enforce good form.
    you don't need to chuck a medicine ball and all that crossfit shit. it's a step in the right direction moving away from certain bad practices (pushups where form can be easily cheated) and making folks do hand raises to show they aren't cheating it, but still a long ways from perfect.

    Im retired now so...I dont have to do this ...but I'm proud of the Army for going harder instead of softer like the rest of society..Ive always said before you know it they will just hand you a uniform and rifle and say your in the Army because everyone crys ..Atleast they are trying to make you earn it still ..Go Army.

The Army has already done a great enough job over its history without a Cross Fit program that makes no sense and is a logistical nightmare.     Those release pushups really screw up my shoulders.
    They're not hard, but I am not sure they are healthy. All kinds of popping and pain going on.
